Three stories…Sohni Mahiwaal, Heer Ranjha and Romeo and Juliet... Three couples enmeshed in love that threatened to destroy them… Three sets of lovers destined for cruel separation…Three tragedies that have survived the test of time as being the greatest love stories of all time…

Sohni, a potter's daughter, who fell in love with Izzat Baig, surrendered to a life of servitude tending cattle, earning him the title of Mahiwaal, was forcibly married off and spent her life in clandestine rendezvous. While the object of her affection lived the life of a Fakir, fishing for her everyday in the nearby stream, making a humble presentation of his catch to his lady love. The two, distraught by their separation, eventually met their sordid end in the furious currents of the Sindhu, etching their memories and the tale of their love forever in history.

Dheedo Ranjha, a prodigal son, taken by the beauty of Heer and burning in the passion of their love accepted the lowly job of caretaker of Heer's father's castle, till fate tore them apart and Heer was wed to another man. Rhanja, in his despondence, took to a life of austerity, roaming the streets, calling the name of God, till he is fortunate to chance upon Heer. Their journey back home to solemnize their union, now with the blessings of their family, was not to meet the happy end they sought, with Sohni biting off a poisoned sweetmeat and Ranjha unable to save her, joines her for eternity by sharing her venomous dessert.

Children of two wealthy warring families, Romeo and Juliet were teenage lovers destined never to meet, but in their death unified their families in the tragedy. A plot to unite the two young lovers, gone wrong, Romeo believes his love to be dead, while she is but in a deep slumber waiting for Romeo. Romeo ends his life in the hope that he will reunite with Juliet in the afterlife and Juliet regaining consciousness, joins her paramour, stabbing herself with Romeo's dagger.

One would wonder why a show on young love would choose such ominous, albeit great, love stories. What is it about our sadistic selves that draws us to the tragedy of others' lives? Why is love great only when the lovers are denied it? And why is pain a necessary ancillary to the most beautiful emotion known to mankind? Why does love have to be consuming? And why do our dear couples on the show have to enact such poignant tales of separation and love that does not meet its just end???

Aartiji, Another fantastic post!! 👏 👏 You're on a roll, yaar!! 😉 😆 😆

I love how you've detailed the stories of Heer-Ranjha and Sohni-Mahiwal...most people probably aren't aware of their stories...so I'm glad your post highlights that 😃

You know, I've read the actual poem about Heer-Ranjha written by Bulle Shah from which the story emerges. It is just so beautifully written. If you're all interested...I could try and dig up a link online hopefully with a translation😳

I think Notty's given fantastic answers to most of your questions!

It really is so ironic that the greatest remembered love-stories seem to be the ones that were unfulfilled...maybe it's the angst that we are just unable to forget...we constantly keep thinking...if only.

The happily ever afters on the other hand seem to fade into oblivion in comparison...with the exception of fairy tales of course 😉 There, the happily ever afters are what we all expect, and do get in the end.

But stories like Romeo-Juliet, Heer-Ranjha, Sohni-Mahiwaal, (adding a few more punjabi ones)Mirza-Sahiba, Sassi-Punnu...seem to live on as legends...

I think we might be drawn to the tragedy in other people's lives because it might be cathartic on some level to be able to release our own pain and suffering through their tragedies...I dunno if that makes any sense 😕 😆 😆 I think I remember my theatre teacher saying that to us once...I just regurgitated that out...might not have said it the way it's supposed to be said 😉 😆 😆

Wow what a treat!!! Nice to read so many awesome posts.

I, for one, didnt know the Heer-Ranjha, Sohni-Mahiwaal stories 😳 😳. I have heard of them but didnt know the actual stories so thanks for elaborating on those.

I for one dont like stories with tragic endings. I would rather have the happily ever after ending. I cant even bear to watch movies with such endings but then there is something within me that wants to watch even though I dont like it and I will hate myself for making myself watch it or even read it. I guess there is a sadistic voyeur somewhere within me too!

One would wonder why a show on young love would choose such ominous, albeit great, love stories.

I guess becos they are the "classic love stories" and also Nana plans to have our Armaan and Ridz get closer to each other with the romantic dialogues (I know it is obvious, still 😳 😳 my 2 cents on it)

What is it about our sadistic selves that draws us to the tragedy of others' lives?

Oh I once had a trainer tell us about that. He calls it "glee." You feel "Thank God I am better off when compared to them and their misery." At some level you feel nice that at least your lot is much better than that!!

Why is love great only when the lovers are denied it?

Oh I guess it shows that lovers dont give up no matter what and "sacrifice" is the other name of love or whatever. I just dont like that concept though I tell you.

And why is pain a necessary ancillary to the most beautiful emotion known to mankind? Why does love have to be consuming?

Oh I guess pain kind of balances out the highs of love. (I cannot think of any other reason). A person in love though also kinda enjoys the pain too associated with it. Even the pain is pleasurable. Some even get so used to it and so much in love with the pain that they dont want to come out of it even. They feel if not love at least let me feel the pain (as if it redeems the loss of their love). Devdas is an example for that according to me. I dont even know if I am making any sense here.

And why do our dear couples on the show have to enact such poignant tales of separation and love that does not meet its just end???

I really dont know why. I dont quite like the idea if it is meant to show that later on Ridz is going to be the "noble sacrificial lover" and give up Armaan to Anji.

All in all I just dont like the idea of unrequited love. It is just a lot of pain and misery. I dont know why anyone would put themselves through that when they can have a life otherwise full of joy and fulfilment.

I dont know why I just had to add this. I like Charles Dickens "A Tale of Two Cities" but I just dont like the way Carton gave up his life for Lucie in the place of Darnay. I feel so bad for Carton. I always pray there aren't people like Carton around. I just cant bear to think of anyone living with so much sadness. I cant express myself too well I guess. I just feel a lot of anguish when I see characters like Sidney Carton. Maybe that is the intention of Charles Dickens but somehow too much pain there. It is like some people are born melancholy and suffering, not able to realize their potential, always having to battle with themselves, and for no imaginable reason. It is not like they had a great tragedy in their lives or anything. It is almost like Carton is redeeming himself after having lived a life which he thinks he wasted away.

i had least idea abt the 3 love stories😆..but was aware of the tragic ending😭😭😭...there never seems to be to a "happy ending".....😳...i m always facinated by disney characters ..........awww i was in tears...Pocahontas loved "colors of the wind"😳

it so soulful & touching when watching these loves stories..it always strikes a cord in ur heart....u can feel the "feel" whether it's love, pain, joy, all the emotions😛

One would wonder why a show on young love would choose such ominous, albeit great, love stories.

hmm coz most of the love stories revolve around young ppl..like our interns...there r ever green "classic love stories"...i think nanu is trying to bring out the true feelings & emotions of all the 3 love stories thru these interns...make them familier with their own emotions & feelings (eg Ridhz) for each other ..which r quite subtle 😉

What is it about our sadistic selves that draws us to the tragedy of others' lives?

i think the strong emtions & feelings in it..like love ..the universal language

Why is love great only when the lovers are denied it?

one knows the true value anything when it denied....when love is denied....it grows deeper, stronger and matures

And why is pain a necessary ancillary to the most beautiful emotion known to mankind?

i feel pain is an adhersive feeling u can relate it with every emotion & can ancillary cohesive feelings like that of love ( hope i am making sense here😕)

Why does love have to be consuming?

errm

coz it's one the most deepest & strongest feeling...it has the capacity to completely renew a person..can make u stronger than tungsten & even as vulnerable as baby...it can make u sacrifice ur life as well as take some1's life ..make u bring back a person from coma or even from dead...it's the puriest of the pure...regarded next to god...

(oh help me aarti i m blank🤓)

And why do our dear couples on the show have to enact such poignant tales of separation and love that does not meet its just end???

this question crossed my mind today, when i saw yesterday's epi.....

in a lighter vein:

...i think it was only to make them understand abt love & bring A - R closer 😉 & yes..for those TRPs😆

cheers

❤️Kai❤️

Well here goes on behalf of Sareeta, she feels that unless you havent experienced pain you havent experienced love in its entirety. (oh God am so nervous, forgive me if I am not able to convey what you feel accurately Sareeta!).

Pain is a part of the experience of love or rather it completes the whole experience of love. The puppy love, passion, ectasy or exultation, pain, the nok-jhok all make up the spectrum of love just like you have a spectrum of colors making up the rainbow and even if one color goes missing it ceases to be a rainbow(a liberty taken by me this rainbow thing just as an illustration!)

Pain makes love real, makes you realize the intensity or depth of the relationship you share, and make you realize how much you stand to lose if you lose out on that relationship and thereby completes the experience of being in love.

Happily ever after is nice but it lacks something in that unless you experience pain, you dont actually realize the value of what you have.

PS Just an attempt to express what Sareeta feels. I am sure she will herself express it much better when she gets her "moment of inspiration" and then words will flow direct dil se as usual. Till then this is what I think she wishes to convey. 😳 😳

^^ Thanks so much Ginak! You've conveyed it so beautifully!!! You've conveyed what exactly I wished to during my conversation over the phone a lil while ago!!!

I am jus penning my thoughts down and yes , I guess I will be unconciously repeating what you've already conveyed on my behalf! And my apologies for that !!!

Thank you sooooo much for penning the reply on my behalf!!! 😉
