Three stories…Sohni Mahiwaal, Heer Ranjha and Romeo and Juliet... Three couples enmeshed in love that threatened to destroy them… Three sets of lovers destined for cruel separation…Three tragedies that have survived the test of time as being the greatest love stories of all time…
Sohni, a potter's daughter, who fell in love with Izzat Baig, surrendered to a life of servitude tending cattle, earning him the title of Mahiwaal, was forcibly married off and spent her life in clandestine rendezvous. While the object of her affection lived the life of a Fakir, fishing for her everyday in the nearby stream, making a humble presentation of his catch to his lady love. The two, distraught by their separation, eventually met their sordid end in the furious currents of the Sindhu, etching their memories and the tale of their love forever in history.
Dheedo Ranjha, a prodigal son, taken by the beauty of Heer and burning in the passion of their love accepted the lowly job of caretaker of Heer's father's castle, till fate tore them apart and Heer was wed to another man. Rhanja, in his despondence, took to a life of austerity, roaming the streets, calling the name of God, till he is fortunate to chance upon Heer. Their journey back home to solemnize their union, now with the blessings of their family, was not to meet the happy end they sought, with Sohni biting off a poisoned sweetmeat and Ranjha unable to save her, joines her for eternity by sharing her venomous dessert.
Children of two wealthy warring families, Romeo and Juliet were teenage lovers destined never to meet, but in their death unified their families in the tragedy. A plot to unite the two young lovers, gone wrong, Romeo believes his love to be dead, while she is but in a deep slumber waiting for Romeo. Romeo ends his life in the hope that he will reunite with Juliet in the afterlife and Juliet regaining consciousness, joins her paramour, stabbing herself with Romeo's dagger.
One would wonder why a show on young love would choose such ominous, albeit great, love stories. What is it about our sadistic selves that draws us to the tragedy of others' lives? Why is love great only when the lovers are denied it? And why is pain a necessary ancillary to the most beautiful emotion known to mankind? Why does love have to be consuming? And why do our dear couples on the show have to enact such poignant tales of separation and love that does not meet its just end???
