A Heart That Loves - Chapter 2

"So are you up for this deal?" he asked.

"Deal?!" she exclaimed. How could he compare being his girlfriend to signing a deal?! Hey Devi Maiyya! This guy clearly had no idea about relationships! Where have you trapped me?!' she thought, before she voiced out a question that had been bugging her since the start of this ordeal.

"Why do you like me?" she asked.

"You have the weekend to decide your answer. On Monday, I want an answer from you first thing," he said, before striding out of his cabin, completely ignoring her question.

"Hawww," she gaped. "Laad governor kaheka. Yeh hume aise kaise chod kar jaa sakthe hai?! Aise hamaare sar par bomb phek kar! (Laad governor. How can he leave me like this?! After throwing a bomb on my head!)" she muttered angrily and then pouted. She looked up to the ceiling as she said, "Hey Devi Maiyya! Ab hum kya karein? (Devi Maiyya! Now what should I do?)" as she bit her lip worriedly.

**********************************************************

***Flashback continued***

That night, Khushi was pacing up and down the living room in her apartment, frantically.

How in the world was a girl supposed to react when her boss suddenly asks - no, negotiates - with her to make a deal' with him of being his girlfriend.

He said it would be a real relationship - WITHOUT LOVE.

Now how that was supposed to work, she didn't know.

As far as she knew, the relationship between a boyfriend and girlfriend, always had to be based on love. Otherwise, it wouldn't last.

So what in the world was ASR suggesting when he said a real relationship with no love?!'

She really didn't know why she was having to think so much on the issue.

Because really, the answer should have been straight forward - a big fat NO.

Why in the world would she agree for a relationship with her boss to act in front of his family? And why in the world would she say yes when she had absolutely no feelings for this man whatsoever?

But that's where the problem laid. She did have feelings for this man.

No, it wasn't love. She wasn't even sure what it was! Admiration? Respect? Again, she didn't know. But these feeling she had... were enough to tell her to stop and think when he had proposed the so called deal. It stopped her from saying a straight no.

Maybe accepting this relationship would allow her to explore whatever it was that she felt for ASR?

But there was also the question of, was it worth it?

Because Khushi Kumari Gupta - though she was a modern woman, wearing modern clothes at times - was a one-man woman.

And she would only give up her heart, body and soul to that one man.

She didn't want to get into a relationship that didn't last and then regret having entered it in the first place, for the rest of her life.

If she was going to enter a relationship, she wanted to be sure of it. And more than that, she wanted the man to be her only man for the rest of her life.

And that is why she was in such a pickle at the moment - on one side was her dream/ her self-made rules, and on the other was this small gut instinct that told her to give this relationship a chance... And she just didn't know which side to give into...

The main problem, was that she didn't know ASR well enough. She had established that Arnav was a good man at heart, but what was he like as a boyfriend?

Now that was another issue - well, more of an advantage but still.

Advantage because he'd never had any girlfriends or flings, and that meant if they did get into this relationship she would be his first. And the thought that he would be hers only made her happier than it should have. This also meant that he must have quite a strong reason for asking her to be his girlfriend after so many years of being a bachelor - and that was also, definitely a good sign for Khushi.

But it was an issue because it meant Khushi had no idea how she would be treated in this relationship without love.' Would he treat her nicely? Or would it all just be a show for his family? Would he respect her wishes? And... did he have any intentions of having any physical relations with her during this relationship? Because if he did then she would definitely say no...

Urgh! Why does life have to be so confusing?!' Khushi thought, frustrated.

She was wracking her heart and brain for some sort of solution, when an idea struck her.

Why didn't I think of this before?' she thought.

And with that, a plan started forming in Khushi Kumari Gupta's brain...

***

The next day, which was a Saturday, during the afternoon Khushi happily skipped towards the gates of Raizada Mansion.

She knew that ASR would be at office by now, so she knew that there wouldn't be any hindrances in her plan.

Any one going to ask what her plan is?

Well I'll tell you anyways. It's simple - go to his house in the name of being his girlfriend and ask about him.

I know - the plan isn't that exciting. It's definitely not up to the mark of the usual Khushi Kumari Gupta's crazy ideas. But hey, it's practical right? If anyone's going to know what ASR is like, it's going to be his family, since no one else seems to know. So why not give this simple idea a chance? Since it's the only idea that seems like it might work.

And so when Khushi finally got to the gates of Raizada Mansion she stopped for a moment to drill into her brain the phrase that she has been repeating over and over to herself the whole morning: You are The ASR's girlfriend, so act like it.'

Just as she was about to enter through the gates after a quick prayer, she was stopped by two guards.

"You can't go in without an appointment. As far as we have been informed, there shouldn't be any visits today," said one of the guards sternly, while both were blocking Khushi's path.

Khushi was about to go all bhaiya on them, when she stopped herself.

She need to act like ASR's girlfriend - of course she would stick to her own personality, but she also had to maintain ASR's image too right? She couldn't go all soft could she? If she were really ASR's girlfriend she would have to at least be able to stand up for herself, and she would do exactly that, she decided.

"Excuse me? Tum mujhe rokrahe ho? (You're stopping me?)" Khushi said, with all the fake attitude she could muster. "Tum jaante bhi ho ki main kon hoon? Arnav Singh Raizada ke girlfriend hoon main. Tum rokoge mujhe? Or vo bhi mere boyfriend ke ghar ko enter karna se? Agar main chaathi hoon to tum dono ko apni nokri se yun chudvaathungi. Abhi bulao ASR ko? Tab patha chalega ki mein kon hoon. (Do you even know who I am? I'm Arnav Singh Raizada's girlfriend. You're going to stop me from entering? And that too from me entering my boyfriend's house? If I want to then I can get you both fired in a second. Do you want me to call ASR now? Then you'll find out who I am)" she threatened, raising her eyebrow.

"No no ma'am!" the other guard nervously replied. "We're sorry we didn't recognise you - you can go in ma'am," he said moving aside, trying to save his job.

Khushi almost laughed out loud seeing both their expressions but controlled herself just in time.

"I thought so too," Khushi said with attitude before walking in.

You might all be thinking why Khushi Kumari Gupta is giving these poor guards so much attitude? It's not like her to be so mean to anyone.

She does have a reason behind her actions.

Knowing how arrogant and egoistic ASR is, she was certain that his family would be like him too. And we all know that Khushi isn't someone who would just sit down and take crap from anyone - she would always stand up for herself. And so she was just practising the attitude she would use with his family, if they were rude to her that is, with those guards. And anyways, she knew that ASR's guards would be just like him - stubborn. And she knew that they wouldn't let her inside RM just like that, so she needed to show them some attitude so that they would let her enter.

It seems kind of mean, but hey she's got to stand up for herself one way or another. She would apologise to those guards later for her behavior, she told herself.

So you all can now see what kind of image Khushi holds in her head when she thinks of Arnav's family.

So I'm sure you will all now understand why Khushi was shocked when she entered RM.

"Hari Prakashji, aap please nani keliye doot le aaye na? (Hari Prakashiji, could you please bring some milk for grandma?)" a sweet, polite voice said.

And Khushi found that the voice came from none other than Anjali, Arnav's sister.

She had seen a picture of her on Arnav's desk and had come to know from Aman that the girl in the picture was Arnav's elder sister, Anjali.

When Khushi had imagined Arnav's sister, she had never imagined anything close to the soft, gentle, kind lady in front of her now...

She had expected an arrogant lady but here, Arnav's sister was polite even to who looked like the house servant.

And somehow, though it was a big shock for Khushi, it had also come out as a pleasant one too.

"Excuse me, sorry, may I ask who you are? I've never seen you before... Have you come to see Chote? Actually he's at office today," Anjali came up to Khushi, with a polite smile, a slight questioning written on her face.

"Namaste, hum Khushi hain, (Hello, I'm Khushi)" Khushi folded her hands as she greeted Anjali.

"Namaste," Anjali greeted back with a smile, yet still confused.

"Actually... I'm A-" Khushi paused. She couldn't call ASR as ASR,' as everyone else calls him if she was going to act like his girlfriend could she? She quickly wracked her brain, thinking what she would call him if he wasn't her boss... "Arnavji! Errr... Arnavji's girlfriend. Yh, I'm Arnavji's girlfriend," she said with a nervous smile.

Anjali just stared at Khushi with her mouth agape, while Nani who was sitting on the sofa now looked at Khushi with shock.

"Namaste Naniji," Khushi greeted a still shocked Nani. She walked towards Nani and quickly bent down to take her blessings.

Nani's hand automatically touched Khushi's head, giving her blessings even though she could hardly think at the moment.

When both Anjali's and Nani's expressions didn't change still, Khushi spoke, "Arre aap done hume aise kyun dekhrehe hain? Voh kya haina? Hum hamesha Arnavji se yeh poochte rahe ki hum unke parivaar ko kab mil sakenge. Lekin unke paas toh hume yahaan laane keliye bilkul bhi wakt nahi hai. Laad governor kahinke. Hamesha kaam pe rehthe hain, (Why are you both looking at me like that? You know what? I've always been asking Arnavji when I'll get to meet his family. But he just doesn't have any time to bring me here. Laad governor. Always busy with work)" she complained pouting. "Toh humne socha ki kyun na aaj hum khud yaahan aakar aap logon se mile? Humne teek kiya na Di, Naniji? (So I thought why not come here myself to meet you all today? I did the right thing didn't I Di, Naniji?)" she asked them both.

"Chote has a girlfriend?" both Nani and Anjali asked at the same time, both almost in a daze.

"Chote? Who's Chote? I'm not talking about any Chote Naniji, I'm talking about Arnavji," Khushi said, now her being the confused one.

Anjali laughed lightly before saying, "Actually we both call your Arnavji, Chote in this house. He's the youngest in the house so we call him Chote out of love," she explained, smiling.

"Really?!" Khushi laughed, "The mighty ASR gets called Chote' at home? I'm going to have the time of my life teasing him!" Khushi said, making the others laugh with her.

And with that Anjali led Khushi to the sofa and all three ladies started chattering about everything and nothing.

Khushi was surprised with the light atmosphere in the house and even more surprised seeing how wonderful Arnav's family were.

Within a few hours Khushi was feeling so attached to them that she almost felt like she was part of the family too.

If being Arnav's girlfriend required her to be a part of such a beautiful family then she would have absolutely no regrets in saying yes.

So now that part was sorted. Now she just needed to find out what Arnav was like...

Seeing Nani looking a little bit tired, Khushi said enthusiastically, "Naniji, you're looking tired. Shall I make you some tea with jalebis?"

Nani who had already been impressed with Khushi's simple but jovial character, was even more impressed knowing that Khushi could cook Indian food - even if it's just partially.

"Oh no betiya! You're our guest - how can we make you work in the kitchen like that?! Wait a minute, I'll just tell Hari Prakash to make some chai for all of us," said Nani quickly.

Khushi pouted, "That means you haven't accepted me as a part of this family at all. I guess it's my fault - how can I expect you to accept me so soon? I'm the one who misunderstood your actions. Sorry Naniji..." she said, dejectedly.

"No betiya! You've become a part of this family too now. We've only just met you but after speaking to you in this small time it seems like we've always known you, and you are one of our own. So never say that betiya. You are a part of this family now too," Nani said lovingly.

"Haan Khushiji, you've become one of us now - not just because you are going to be Chote's life partner but also because in this short time you've stolen both our hearts too," Anjali joined.

"Then why can't I cook for you?" Khushi questioned. "If I was one of you then you would never say no to me doing something for you," she complained, crossing her arms like an upset child.

Both Nani and Anjali shook their heads at Khushi's childish behaviour. This girl definitely had her way with them, they thought.

Smiling, Anjali said, "Okay Khushiji, we give in. But I'll come with you to accompany you - I hope that's okay with you?"

"Of course!" Khushi agreed enthusiastically as she got up to go into the kitchen.

With that both Anjali and Khushi went to the kitchen, with Anjali making the chai and Khushi making the jalebis.

A while later both Anjali and Khushi came out with steaming cups of chai as well as a plate of garam garam jalebis.

Soon they were all settled with their shares of tea and jalebis.

As Nani took a bite of the jalebi in her hand, she was absolutely delighted. "Bitiya this tastes wonderful! Just like the ones we used to have back home in Lucknow!"

"Right Nani!" Anjali agreed, almost moaning with how amazing the jalebis tasted.

"You're from Lucknow too?" Khushi asked, pleasantly surprised.

"You're from Lucknow too?" both Anjali and Nani asked simultaneously.

They all laughed at the coincidence, both surprised by it and happy about it. It just felt like it was all meant to be...

Both Anjali and Nani were thinking that their Chote had definitely found the best girl to be his life partner. And they were both ecstatic with that thought...

And that is how Arnav found them all in the living room, laughing together happily.

But Arnav didn't notice Khushi as she was quite a small figure sitting on the sofa with her back towards him.

The moment Anjali saw Arnav enter, she walked up to him and pouted, "I'm angry at you Chote."

"What the?! Di, you were completely fine this morning! So what happened between this morning and now that you're angry with me?" Arnav asked, completely confused.

"You've changed Chote! You don't care about me anymore! You don't tell me anything!" Anjali complained.

"What the?! Di, did you have a fight with jijaji or something?" he asked, looking at her clueless. And when he saw the glare thrown his way he backtracked, "Di you know if there's anyone I care about most, it's you. So what's all this about?"

Khushi who had been listening to the conversation was in awe of the way Arnav was speaking to his Di...

She'd never thought that the ASR who only understood the language of deals, could speak so lovingly towards someone...

Yes he wasn't being all soft and cheesy, but Khushi knew very well that his words to his Di held great care and love behind them.

"But you didn't tell me Chote!" Anjali continued to complain, pouting.

"Tell you what Di?"

"Why should I tell you now? You should have been the one to tell me, but you didn't. I'm so upset Chote, I'm not going to talk to you anymore," she said.

"Di, you know my day doesn't run without you," Arnav said, not happy to see his Di unhappy with him.

Seeing her not moving, he held his ears with both hands and said, "Di I don't know what's wrong but look I'm holding my ears. Whatever it is, I didn't mean to hurt you Di, please talk to me," he said, looking at her expectantly.

In that second, Khushi melted.

Her decision was made.

She would say yes to him.

Why, you ask?

When a man loves his family so much, then how much would he love you when you become a part of that family?

Just seeing the way he loved his Di so much, she knew that he would never mistreat her in their relationship. He would give her all the respect and care she deserved, she was sure.

"When you love me so much, why didn't you tell me you had a girlfriend?" Anjali asked pouting.

"What the?!" Arnav was taken aback.

"Which idiot told you that?!" he asked, his anger rising thinking of the man that had the guts to lie to his Di.

"I did," he heard a familiar female voice from behind his Di.

No, what am I thinking? How can she be here?' Arnav thought, shaking his head to clear it.

Anjali and Nani wanted to giggle seeing Arnav's confused expression, but kept quiet.

Arnav stepped aside to see who this girl was who had told his Di that he had a girlfriend.

He could only see the back of the girl when the girl herself decided to relieve him of the pain of overworking his brain.

The girl turned around and there...

He saw her standing in his house, with his family, in all her beauty, smiling at him cheekily, with pure happiness emanating from her.

For some reason that image, made his heart beat erratically...

Dhak dhak... Dhak dhak... Dhak dhak...

And Khushi's state was no different...

She'd been all prepared to tease him, but when she saw him look at her like that... she felt her heart race in her chest like crazy...

Dhak dhak... Dhak dhak... Dhak dhak...

Her smile that had been mischievous before, now almost disappeared as all she could feel was this sweet tension between them both, and she just couldn't take her eyes off his...

Both continued to look into each other's eyes before their trance was broken by a cough from Anjali.

Both looked everywhere but at each other as they both couldn't fathom what had happened to them in that moment...

"See what I mean Chote! You hid such a huge thing from me! Me! You hid your relationship from your Di! How could you Chote?!" Anjali complained.

Arnav just turned to look at Khushi as if saying, What did you tell them?'

Khushi simply shrugged, a slight smirk pasted on her face.

Let him suffer just like I did all of yesterday. Let him taste his own medicine,' she thought.

As soon as Arnav saw the emerging smirk on Khushi's face, he knew instantly what was going on in that tiny head of hers. Don't worry, you'll pay for this darling. No one gets away with playing ASR,' he thought to himself.

And with that started Arnav's mission to pacify his sweet sister and sweetly torture that little minx who would now be his.

"Haan Chote! How could you hide our matter from your Di, Chote? Did you not think about how she would feel when she found out from another person, Chote?" Khushi teased, adding fuel to the fire as she had her fun calling THE ASR, Chote with every sentence.

Meanwhile Anjali and Nani giggled, seeing someone else now who had the guts to tease their Chote.

"What the?! Di!" he looked at his Di, appalled. "You told her?!"

"If she doesn't tell me, then who will she tell?" Khushi asked, coming up behind Anjali to lean her chin on her shoulder. "I'm your girlfriend and I have all the rights to know what my boyfriend is being called at home. Right Di?" Khushi said, looking at Anjali.

"Of course, Khushiji!" Anjali agreed, as they both giggled. "And Chote, stop harassing our Khushiji so much okay?" Anjali teased, placing a hand on Khushi's cheek.

"What the?! I'm harassing her?! Didn't you see her what she did a minute ago? That should have proved who was harassing who."

"Chote! She was just having fun with her boyfriend, what's wrong in that?"

"Acha?"Arnav raised an eyebrow, smirking.

Without a warning Arnav grabbed Khushi's hand and pulled her towards him in one go, making her come out from behind Anjali and come crashing into his chest, while he caught her by her waist.

"I have better ideas for having fun' with your boyfriend. Wanna try them Khushi?" he asked, flirtatiously.

Khushi's breath stuck in her throat hearing his words and feeling his hands on her waist. She couldn't breathe a single word!

Meanwhile Nani's and Anjali's eyes widened seeing the scene in front of them. It was like they were a seeing a completely different Arnav in front of them... And when had he turned so besharam?!

As Khushi heard the gasps from Anjali and Nani, she somehow managed to find her voice back, "A-Arnav-ji, chodiye naa, s-sab dekhre hain, (A-Arnav-ji let go, e-everyone's looking)" she stuttered, trying to push him back as the blush on her face refused to leave.

Only after a few pushes from Khushi did he finally relent, releasing Khushi from his hold, though not completely.

For the rest of the evening he spent his time trying to pacify his sister, making up a story about how he asked Khushi out and their love story.'

He made sure to brush his hands against Khushi's, or to hold her waist with possession or to brush her hair back from her face at times, making goosebumps erupt all over Khushi's body with his touches.

Khushi should have felt revolted with his touch, but she didn't. Because she knew that he wasn't doing it out of lust... She knew that he was teasing her but even then he was maintaining a certain distance...

When they sat together on the sofa, he made sure to hold her hand (for the sake of Nani and Anjali of course ;)) but he also made sure to leave a small gap between them so as not to make her feel too uncomfortable.

He held her waist with possession - or at least that's how it looked to the others in the room. But only she and Arnav knew that his hand was barely there - it was enough to give her butterflies in her stomach but it was also light enough for her to know that he was still giving her space to not make her feel uncomfortable.

These small gestures themselves spoke for him in her opinion. They told her that she won't be mistreated in this relationship, and he was already trying to give her the space she needed - even if that was in his own twisted way. He'd taken what he wanted but was still giving her enough space to herself...

And from this itself she knew that it won't be long before she falls for this arrogant yet considerate(ish) man.

Soon after dinner, Arnav excused himself saying that he needed to get some work done, and called Khushi upstairs into his room too, saying he needed to discuss the Singhania's file with her.

Nani and Anjali just giggled together as they gestured her to go up.

That was when Khushi finally started to feel nervous - like really nervous.

She knew it was time for them to actually talk things out properly and set things in place... But was she ready for this yet? She didn't know for sure, but she decided she would take things as it comes.

Sending a quick prayer to Devi Maiyya, Khushi followed Arnav slowly into his room...

As soon as the door closed behind them Arnav started, "So...? You decided to accept the deal."

Khushi's nose flared at that, "Look, this is not some kind of deal for me okay? I don't even know why I said yes to this relationship... I... This is totally against all the dreams I've ever had about the man of my life... But... There's this tiny part of my heart that tells me to say yes to your proposition and as crazy as it sounds, I want to listen to it." Khushi sighed. She knew she sounded a like an idiot just then but everything she said was completely true and she had no idea if Arnav would understand that or not.

Arnav just rolled his eyes and was about to speak when Khushi interrupted again.

"I'm not like you. To me, relationships are more than just... deals," Khushi said the word with distaste. "This relationship means something to me, on an emotional level... And that doesn't mean I expect you to love me or marry me... I won't ever ask that from you... But that doesn't mean I'll ask you for money, gifts or fame either..."

"There's no need to be shy about asking for money. I know the world runs on money, and if you've said yes to this relationship within a day I know the reason for that. Don't worry, even without you naming things I'll give you all the expensive gifts you've never even seen in your dreams, in return for the favour you're doing for me and my family."

"No Mr Arnav Singh Raizada, that's exactly what I don't want," Khushi retorted, her anger showing slightly in her voice. "I'm not a prostitute - I won't sleep with my boss for his money. I'm not like that... So don't expect any kind of ph-ph-physi-physical relationship with me... I know you said this will be a real relationship but... I can't... you..." Khushi sighed nervously, knowing she would never be able to openly speak to him on that topic. "A-a-anyways, I only expect one thing in this relationship. Whether you believe that or not, that's your problem, not mine. I don't have to prove anything to you."

With that being said, Khushi turned away only to be stopped by Arnav's question, "But you didn't mention what that one thing was that you wanted from this relationship?"

Khushi turned back to see Arnav standing there looking at her with his usual ASR poker face - but she could see the curiosity burning in his eyes.

"YOU," she said, looking straight into his eyes.

She held his eyes for all of three seconds before she turned around and walked away.

What she didn't see was the smile that threatened to peek out of Arnav's lips as he watched her leave the room. This girl is proving my decision right with every single second,' he thought.

***Flashback over***

Khushi almost laughed thinking how their relationship started with such an unpredictable proposition.

But she couldn't say she regretted a single moment of it.

After that day they went out on dates occasionally, and they got to know each other better on a professional level... On a personal level however, it was all very limited... Of course Arnav would share some things about himself, but it was not enough to show Khushi the real him.

Khushi spent so much time with him but sometimes she could never understand him... She just didn't know what ran in his head at times - and he wouldn't share it with her either. Sometimes she was sure something was eating him up from inside, making him take it out on everyone as anger, but she was never able to make him feel better because he wouldn't let her in.

Even with Arnav himself being the barrier, Khushi still somehow managed to fall in love with him though...

Khushi laughed gently, thinking he'd somehow caught her in his web without even trying.

Or maybe he did try, but it was just her who didn't know? He still hadn't told her till date, why he had asked her out of all people to be his girlfriend... Khushi just smiled at the thought... She was sure she would definitely find out in time...

During the time they got to know each other, she could see that Arnav had softened up when it came to her - only a little bit, but it was still something right?

And they had got used to being in close proximity with one another. As months rolled by, brushing of hands had become normal, kissing each other's cheeks had become a ritual, and hugging each other had become as easy as breathing...

But Arnav never took it beyond that... They had never kissed each other on the lips... And Arnav hadn't initiated anything beyond that level of intimacy ever... He also never came to Khushi's apartment during the nights - unless it was an emergency on her side, but that had only ever occurred once...

All these small gestures of Arnav's only made her respect him more and love him more...

It wasn't that she didn't want him to move forward... She did... But in time... She knew she wanted it all with him - only with him... Regardless of whether he loved her or not... But only at a point when they had both opened up to each other fully... She wasn't sure if that would ever happen, but a girl could dream right?

Khushi looked down at Arnav sleeping in her arms peacefully like a baby.

She didn't know what had upset him so much that he came to her apartment at this time, completely drunk... She had never seen him so out of himself... And who was this woman who had left him...?

She wished he would share his pain with her... But she knew that in the morning he would act as if nothing had happened - he would block her out of it...

But no matter how much he pushes me, I'll always be by his side,' she decided. Always...'

And with that she went to sleep, tightening her arms around him, giving him the comfort he needed even in his sleep, while taking comfort from the fact that she had the love of her life in her arms, sleeping peacefully beside her...

Hey guys, I'm sorry for disappearing for so long - those who read my note know why, and those who didn't, let me just say personal circumstances... I know I come up with excuses every time but I just can't help it. I'm sorry. And I hope the long update makes up for it... I mean this is the length of two updates in one, so I hope that makes up for something.

Anyways how was the update? Those who were wondering if there's a Lavanya in this story who Arnav loves, well I hope you got your answer. Same goes for those who think he might have had an ex who left him... Hope you guys are happy now J

Those who are waiting for an update of MIMP, don't worry, it's coming soon - I've already started writing it.

Please let me know what you thought of this update with your likes/comments.
