I tried watching this show because I read there is finally a show that has a flawed, real female lead..but on the basis of whatever number of episodes I have watched I will say that I disagree..may be the teenage sumo was wrong, flawed, real but how is this grown up suman who has a perpetual bechaara face when with her "family" any different from the other mary sues of indian tv?
She is shown to be taking care of everyone, even if nobody gives a damn about that care, about her..before the party her mami said to her 'because of these parties and enjoyment one forgets the important work that is to be done, I will suggest that you don't go'..suman is not shown to feel angry(or even bad) about this..she is not shown to feel bad or angry or frustrated at anything that her family says..her cousin spoilt her dress and after merely saying sorry she happily goes away without any offer of help and suman still has no complaints..
I get she must have felt guilty about the car fiasco but couldn't/shouldn't she have reacted a bit after the way her mami reacted at her accident news?after the way her cousin reacted(who btw was forgiven so easily by suman just yesterday)..even if she can't react because she feels indebted or whatever toward those people..but shouldn't there at least be supressed feelings of frustration/anger?
Her bechaara face was kind of annoying in yesterday's episode..to me she is just like most lead on tv..at the most fiesty towards the hero..not anybody else.

This show is promoted as how suman balances her love life and self respect/how she chooses her self respect over her love..so she gets aware of her self respect only when with shravan?..otherwise she is going to go all out for her inconsiderate family which does not value her at all?

Interesting take :-)
About going out of the way to impress her family or extended family. I feel its a desperate attempt.from her to feel wanted
If you see she always offers to pay the money ,do the work to prove that she's not financially dependent on any one and frankly and she's doing her part ...but since she doesn't have any other home she puts up with what ever is dished out to her

But I agree paying.3 lakhs just because she was late to pick them up is too much it's a company paying for a delayed service In consumer court

Hi Love ur handle ... LOLita ... the way u spell it tickles the funny bone 😉

No character is completely different specially female protagonists on TV ... cause in our country if u are essentially shown as good u have to have traces of self sacrificing in you ...
Which is kinda true for real life but thats a very long & serious discussion platform which does not have much to do with this topic .😉😳

... what's interesting in the character called SUMO .. is that she is a firebrand outside the house .. (suggest u watch the earlier episodes) ... but in the house ... she is meek sacrificial lamb ... this fact is actually highlighted ...

Now the serial is hardly 3 weeks old .. so give it time .. this aspect .. which was also alluded to by PUSHKAR in yesterdays episode .. is a very big turning point in the script ... what makes a girl who is in actual fact .. A SELFISH person ( as her BFF pointed out) ... turn into a person who is SELFLESS ...

Heres some thoughts to ponder .. SUMO is an orphan .. who is staying in her MATERNAL household .. not PATERNAL .. where essentially one still would have ownership feelings (in indian households)
She is self obligated to clear a HUGE loan her deceased mother took from her brother/bhabhi ...

while i would agree with you there have been many heroines of similar shades .. one such u carry in your DP .. KHUSHI KUMARI GUPTA ... but aren't all love stories same ...
BOY MEETS GIRL .. some obstruction .. & bang they r in love ...
but we still watch it .. coz of the 'treatment' ... so the only thing different here is probably treatment .. but whoa ... its to early to predict even that ... 😆

Hope have tried clearing some of ur thots .. this was just a thot inducing post .. open to discussion ..

Promos highlighted the same

*ghar mein chui mui(calm and obedient...) Si suman
Bahar sumo kehlati hai*

As someone said above* she is a firebrand outside the house .. ... but in the house ... she is meek sacrificial lamb ... this fact is actually highlighted ...*

maa baap ka karz chukana hai aur samman paana hai

The day she clears all the debts...she will owe the respect...that is she can stand for her self-respect...

Right Now she cant argue with her maternal family

You raised valid points. But I don't quite agree with you.

Just because she chooses to be respectful & remains silent, it doesn't make her a doormat, or a girl without any self-respect. She doesn't say anything because they are not worth her explanation, like Nanaji is & also because she has been staying with them out of an obligation to repay their debt. Mamiji advised her not to go to the party, but yet she went. That in itself makes it clear that she is not one to obey them silently. If you're looking for a strong & loud display of feminism, then clearly this isn't the show. This show, from the very promos, never tried to hide the fact that she is Sumo outside the house & much more repressed in the house.

Also, I would like to ask you what is the point of her arguing with them over little insults everyday? That would only make it difficult for all of them to live under one roof. Having said that, I don't mean that she should take in everything they do, silently. She is trying to be at peace with them, so that she can have her own independent life without their interference, & quickly pay off their loan. Also until now, they have not done anything extreme that requires her to speak up & argue with them. They were a little mean yesterday, but then somewhere she was at fault too.

Every show has this kind of family drama but what makes this show refreshing & different is how realistic the presentation is, without long dramatic dialogues, or over-dramatization of situations. And this has been balanced very well with just the right amount of humour that allows us to appreciate the highs & lows of life together with these characters.

Very valid points dear & i had pointed this out earlier in 1 of my posts as well. However the sad truth is that this is the story of Indian women in large. Take me for instance. I am in a very high post in 1 of the biggest IT co in India. Earn lakhs of money, have a school going daughter.

But I cant say a word against my MIL at home. Have had lots of fights with my hubby in the past. Now its simple acceptance. This is how life is for a married middle class Indian woman. You can either accept & deal with it or whine & moan over it. Since the latter is of no use I simply choose to ignore every taunt by my MIL. Of course i show my resentment thru silence which my hubby understands. Some times he makes me feel better, sometimes he makes it worse.

So in truth the FL is actually v real & most of the working women in India can relate to this character.

She's the unwanted foster kid, they raised her, her parents are indebted to them... so is she. So she bows down before them.
