The Dupatta: Tied together
The dupatta is one of the most carefully chosen accessories in Indian dressing. It is also called chunni, chunari, or odni. Generally it is worn with salwar-kameez, churidhar-kurta or ghagra choli. It is also worn during auspicious occasions such as weddings - in which case the color red is chosen. Offerings of the chunari are also made at temples.
Throughout the serial the CVs have carefully weaved the dupatta into the story to keep the audience hooked. Does it symbolize that TanShi are tied together in knots for lifetimes? Or does it signify their need for freedom from the Rano-Bani jodi? I think that is the subtle message that the CVs want to convey. The fluttering chunari is also a symbol of freedom.
Initially we saw a young Rishi running away with his playmate, Tanu's dupatta. Then, when he was hanging to a ledge with a sheer drop beneath him, Tanu used her dupatta to rescue him. They were engaged (or their Roka was performed) with Kali Mata's chunari wrapped around them. And now that they are older, as Tanu is being taken for wound care by the police her dupatta flies off and covers Rishi.
Rishi's childhood memories have been suppressed by his mother's brain washing. They torment him as dreams. And he watches Tanu through her dupatta as if in a fog. But once he hears the name Tanu - his memories are partially revived. He remembers her conversation about the moon. He recollects the feel of her touch and realizes that it was she to whom he returned the lost locket.
Now we come to the promo where Rishi throws the red dupatta on Tanu - only to find her vanish away. What is it's significance? Will he marry her - only to lose her? Or will he lose her before they get married?
