I think 18 is too early to be made a legal age for marriage. At 18, normally people r just outof school waiting to go to college. Due to dis leagal age of 18, many girls in conservative families r forced to get married as soon as they turn 18. Dis results in those girls not going to college to get a degree n be eligible for any job. In TV serials also, they show d girls of 18-19 getn married n not allowed to go yo college or leave their colleges. If men's legal of marriage is 21 then women's also sud be 21. Wat do u all think sud be legal marriage age for women in India?

I agree.
Not only does early marriage hamper education, it also hampers the emotional development. I don't think girls at 18 are emotionally ready for marriage.

22-24 is okay.

That's not the only issue here. For practical purposes even child marriage and child rape within such marriages is legal in India. Technically you may not marry before the age of 18, but if you are married under religious ceremony, then its a marriage and cannot be considered null and void unless the girl voluntarily walks out of it before she turns 20 (How many Indian girls would do that?). In other words, child marriage is not void but voidable. So if a 15 year old girl's parents gets her married to an older man, under IPC 375, it won't be considered Statutory rape or rape of any other kind. The union government has repeatedly defended this ridiculous law citing 'prevalent circumstances' in the country.

Indian express reports- march 2016

"The government remains unconvinced about criminalising marital rape as Minister for Women and Child Development Maneka Gandhi told Rajya Sabha Thursday that a country like India is not ready for the change due to factors like poverty, illiteracy and religious beliefs.

"It is considered that the concept of marital rape, as understood internationally, cannot be suitably applied in the Indian context due to various factors like level of education/illiteracy, poverty, myriad social customs and values, religious beliefs, mindset of the society to treat the marriage as a sacrament, etc.," she said in a written reply in the Upper House in response to a question on whether the government plans to criminalise marital rape.

The government's stand on marital rape hasn't changed even though a recent report submitted by amicus curiae Indira Jaising to the Supreme Court had called for criminalising the offence."

In our mothers n grandmothers times, it worked. But now wid changing times, its necessary for girls to be properly educated n settled before getn married. Even my mom n grandmoms married very early before they even turned 18. But in 2days times, things have changed a lot.
