BULAND DARWAZA
Set into the south wall of congregational mosque, the Jama Masjid at Fatehpur Sikri is 55 metres (180 ft) high, from the outside, gradually making a transition to a human scale in the inside. The gate was added some five years after the completion of the mosque c. 1576-1577 as an 'victory arch', to commemorate Akbar's successful Gujarat campaign. It carries two inscriptions in the archway, one of which reads: "Isa, Son of Mariam said: The world is a bridge, pass over it, but build no houses on it. He who hopes for an hour may hope for eternity. The world endures but an hour. Spend it in prayer, for the rest is unseen".
The central portico comprises three arched entrances, with the largest one, in the centre, is known locally as the Horseshoe Gate, after the custom of nailing horseshoes to its large wooden doors for luck. Outside the giant steps of the Buland Darwaza to left is deep well.

JODHA BAI PALACE
This is the largest palace in the Fatehpur Sikri seraglio, connected to the minor
haramsara (where the less important harem ladies and maids would have resided) quarters. The main entrance is double storied, projecting out of the facade to create a kind of porch leading into a recessed entrance with a balcony. Inside there is a quadrangle surrounded by rooms. the columns of rooms are ornamented with a variety of Hindu sculptural motifs. The glazed tiles on the roofs from Multan have an eye catching shade of turquoise.
[7] The mosque was built in honour of Jodha Bai, mother of Jahangir and wife of Akbar. Her Mughal name was Mariyam Zamani Begum and this being the reason that the mosque was built in her honor in Lahore's walled city. Jahangir built his mother Mariyam Zamani Begum's mosque and is just 1 km away from the tomb of Akbar near Agra at a place called Sikandra. (credit wikipedia)

ANUP TALAB
Anup Talao situated in the front of Khawabgah complex was one of the most mentioned tanks at Fatehpur Sikri. This square red sand stone tank had a beautiful platform enclosed by a jalied balustrade in its center. The raised seat in the middle of this platform perhaps presented the most romantic loveseat ever conceived inside a building. This platform was connected to the sides of the tank via four causeways that were supported on the stoned pillar with bracketed capitals. The tank was connected to the water work system to the north of the city to ensure the inflow of fresh water in it and to the Sukh Tal, outside the southern wall to avoid overflowing of water. Abul Fazl recorded that this beautiful pool was once filled with gold, copper and silver coins that shimmered like so many sunrays and looked quite stunning. Jehangir has mentioned in his memoirs that he distributed copper and silver coins worth one crore three lakh rupees that were emptied out of the tank in the charity.

the Diwan-i-Khas or Hall of Private Audience, is a plain square building with four chhatris on the roof. However it is famous for its central pillar, which has a square base and an octagonal shaft, both carved with bands of geometric and floral designs, further its thirty-six serpentine brackets support a circular platform for Akbar, which is connected to each corner of the building on the first floor, by four stone walkways. It is here that Akbar had representatives of different religions discuss their faiths and gave private audience.

PAANCH MAHAL
A five-storied palatial structure, with the tiers gradually diminishing in size, till the final one, which is a single large-domed chhatri. Originally pierced stone screens faced the facade and probably sub-divided the interior as well, suggesting it was built for the ladies of the court. The floors are supported by intricately carved columns on each level, totalling to 176 columns in all.
DIWAN E AAM
Diwan-i-Aam or Hall of Public Audience, is a building typology found in many cities where the ruler meets the general public. In this case, it is a pavilion-like multi-bayed rectangular structure fronting a large open space. South west of the Diwan-i-Am.
THE ROYAL HAREM (RARE PIC)
This complex includes Jodha Bai's palace and other palaces like Jodha Bai's Palace, Hawa Mahal & Viaduct, Birbal's House, Stables Panch Mahal, Mariyam's House, Zenana Garden, Nagina Masjid, Ladies' Guest House and Harem Sara Guest House. This was the private place for the women of the palace. This place was designed keeping in mind the purdah custom for women; still the place is well lighted and well ventilated.
A unique viaduct connecting the palace to the lower plain is also a masterpiece of architecture. Complex contains a separate garden and a mosque specially meant for women. A wind tower called Panch Mahal is also located in this complex. There are other minor buildings like the guesthouse and female guard quarters in Imperial harem complex |
