Hey everyone! Back once again, but this time with a mini OS. I was planning on updating COL today, however as I began to write this one down, I ended up spending more time on this mini OS. To those of you who are waiting for a COL update, I will try to have it done to in the next 2-3 days, so until them hope you all will like this one...
He was woken by the sound of something falling loudly. Jerking his eyes open, he rushed to his son's bedside only to him okay and fast asleep unaffected by the loud noise due to the sedatives given to him. Seeing his panic, the nurse in the room looking at him apologetically as she picked up the bottle that had slipped while he smiled at her relieved that his son was okay. As she continued her work checking on his son's vitals after she had informed him the patient's fever was decreasing, he sat down by the small stool placed by the bed. Taking his son's weak flimsy hand into his rough ones, his eyes pooled up as he looked at the stillness in his usually energetic child.
When was the last time he saw a smile on his young son's face? When was the last time his son sat with the family enjoying himself? When was the last time they had shared a hug?
His head hung low as he heard all the questions in his son's choked voice.
He wanted to cry and call his son back to him. But how could he? He had let him down. He had disappointed him. The boy he had promised to everything he could ever ask for on the day he had first held him in his arms was now probably cursing him. He felt ashamed of himself.
Today his wife cried to him, she broke down in his arms on the distance that had been created between them and their children. But he stayed quiet. What could he say to the woman who had done everything in her control to keep their family together? What could he do to console the woman who he had put in a situation where she lost at the end no matter what because they would have to choose one child over the other? What could he say to her when he himself wanted to cry his heart out over what had happened to their once happy family?
Was he to blame? He questioned himself and his actions.
Had he not been able to do enough as a father?
Had he deprived his children, his family of anything?
Had he not been able to fulfill all his responsibilities well?
What had he not been able to do for his children that brought him to the point of having to choose between them?
Yet like every time he had been questioning everything that caused his family to break apart, he couldn't get any answers. Sometimes he felt at fault, he couldn't be the one to sort out the problems in his home and maintain relationship, but on the other hand he didn't know whether things were in his hands.
The tension in their home had increased to such an extent, he didn't know if he could have done anything that would have stopped the separation bound to happen in their home.
But why? Why had things got to the extent that his family needed to be broken apart in such a way. He didn't realize when a tear fell from his eyes.
He was only brought of the chaos in his mind when he felt a movement in between his hands. Wiping off his tears, he looked at his son hoping he was gaining consciousness but only to have tears return to his eyes. His tough hands couldn't handle the twitching of his son's hand and he let it fall while looking on numb unable to digest the pain his son was going through. It was the frantic noise the monitors attached to his child that rang in his ears which made him snap out of his shock and immediately press the red emergency button calling for help. He stood by his bedside unsuccessfully controlling his emotions as he ran his hand over his son's head trying to soothe him as his body helplessly convulsed.
But as the doctor rushed in followed by a trail of nurses, he was slowly moved back away from his son until he was out the door of the ICU and left to only look on at the horrifying turn of events. He watched injections being pierced into his skin by nurses and he shut his own eyes unable to see the sight. He only opened them to see his son in his tranquil state once again with the only difference being more monitors attached to his exhausted body and his tired pale face being significantly covered with an oxygen mask.
He fell onto the floor after the doctor had come out to inform him that his son was alright and it was expected for him to experience a seizure, however it was nothing to worry about. As the doctors and nurses slowly emptied the room, his wife slowly walked over to him after she returned from a long night in their quiet home where no one slept after the horrible event they had gone through throughout the day. When he tried to explain to her what he had seen taking place in front of his eyes, she couldn't fathom the thought of their son being in such a state as she fell onto a small bench wailing.
He wanted to reach out to her and console her, but with what words? This woman had done everything in her possible control to keep a joint family together in today's times, but he had let her down. He hadn't been able to do his part to keep their children together and it had resulted in their crumbled family. He left her to her state not knowing how to console her and help pick up what he had helped break inside of her.
Instead he walked over the small square window of the ICU and looked on. Touching the small glass, he caressed his son's face without touching him. The mere distance between them in the moment reflecting on the distance that had been created in their lives yet their feelings remained intact.
Knowing he was the cause of this distance to an extent, a tear from his eyes as he remembered his words, as he remembered his son's back as he walked out of their home, he remembered the incident leading up to his hospitalization and his momentarily smile before he had fainted in his arms. Leaning against the hard door of the room, he cried as he apologized to his eldest child, his support, his Raman...
"I'm sorry Raman, I'm sorry."
He could whispered before he felt a hand on his shoulder. Looking up to find his wife kneeling down by him, she wiped off his tears and told him it would. It was the reassurance he needed and the final words before he broke down in front of her apologizing for letting this happen to the son who had never failed them, but he felt like he had failed him instead. Telling him he wasn't a failure, she informed him of their daughter-in-law and grandchildren returning back to their home, the Bhalla house, without a word after today. It made his heart feel lighter knowing his children were at their home where they belonged. But his heart wouldn't be at peace until Raman who lay on the hospital bed after the attack on him, would happily return to his home as well...
