Our country is tolerant, gives freedom of speech and expression: Akshay Kumar

In a strong statement, Bollywood superstar Akshay Kumar has slammed the intolerant brigade', telling them to be more responsible with words.

The actor, who is riding high on the super start to his patriotic film Airlift', also said that the country is very much tolerant, gives freedom of speech and expression.

"Our country is very much tolerant and gives freedom of speech and expression to everyone. However, it is our responsibility to think before we speak, as many times it happens that our words get misinterpreted. One needs to recheck their facts before speaking anything in front of the media."

"I don't think that India doesn't give us the freedom of speech and expression. I am proud of my nation" Akshay said.

Recently, Karan Johar said that democracy and freedom of expression in the country is a joke.

Kajol, one of Karan's good friends in the industry, also downplayed the controversy.

She said "Our industry will always keep reflecting on what is happening in our society. It will keep on going and everyone is welcome. There are no dividing lines, no caste, no creed and no intolerance in Bollywood"

Kajol had the same advice as Akshay, asking public personalities to speak well and correctly.

"These days people seem to have become oversensitive. As public personalities, it is our duty to speak well and correctly. I have always said my Mann ki baat' and it is no different now" the Dilwale' star said.

Meanwhile, filmmaker Prakash Jha also spoke about Johar's comment on intolerance.

He said "He (Johar) had talked about his own state of mind and not the current state of the country. Why should we worry about his state of mind? He just described his mental state and it is his right to express himself"

He also said that there is absolutely no intolerance in the country "Our society is strong and we have been respecting each other cultures and communities"

Did I ever mention how much I adore you Akki? I might not drool over you like I do for HR or VK but I have always respected you and admired your work. Thank God you don't fall for these politics and always maintain dignity with your statements. \m/

He just contradicted himself in the very next sentence.

India has freedom of speech but we have to think before we speak.

whats the point of freedom of speech if we have to think about everything and everyone before speaking. That is not freedom of speech, akki. Sorry.

freedom of speech is when you can say whatever the hell you want and not get bashed for it. Everyone is a free man in this world, no body should think about others when they want to say something. That's dictatorship, not democracy.

Freedom of speech doesn't mean speaking whatever you want to without caring for it's consequences, along with freedom of speech comes the responsibility to ot hurt sentiments of the people. Along with rights we have certain responsibilities and duties too.

Freedom of speech does mean saying whatever one wants to say. If people want to share their feelings and POV then they have to feel they can do it otherwise, slowly but surely one country will become a place were people can only say what is okayed by the governement and without people taking notice a country will slip into totalitarism.

Akshay is both wrong and right in his statement. Because people should mind other people feelings while expressing themselves on a public plateform but at the same time, the citizen of a country should feel free and secure about talking about what is wrong in his own country without fearing about his well-being.

Let's not forget that each time people fought against injustice, they were going against the general opinion and governement.

It's not because someone criticize its country that one doesn't love it ; it's like wanting to heal a loved one IMO by first pointing out the symptoms to try and get the best cure.

I like Akshay but i don't agree completely with his statement . I think him blatantly refusing the issue and making this strong statement is just being opportunist and just to win over a majority for which will help in success of his career because there is clearly some issue ( may be based on class, religion, caste, culture etc) and that needs to be addressed logically .
You an see the result in media comments/social network as Akshay being the most patriotic BW celeb.
Didn't his wife tweet something along the line " a country where everything is sacred except laughter" and generalised the whole country 😕
And honestly i don't blame Akshay for this statement it's just that i can see through it .

Well that's not true caz if that was the case then ppl would be much more acceptable of difference of opinion. Yes, being celebrities Srk and Amir should be much more careful of what they say but it should be caz they have fans who look upto to them, not caz some political party will ban their movies and ask them to leave the country and so on. These ridiculous actions just prove that there is no freedom of speech , and supposedly India is biggest democratic country in the world !!

well I dont completely agree with what Akshay says about tolerance, but you should always think before you speak, asyou never know how its consequences might impact you and many people around...so the point is always think, if you care...
