When did he have a solo clean hit in last 10 years?

Any movies of his in last 5 years that did well?

he is not some A-lister or high-squad actor yet his last 3 were averages...
after 2010 he has no disaster... 3 out of 9 were flops; out of which 1 was not his movie either i.e. 7 khoon maaf! others did decently on BO

@ the end of day it all depends upon the character... like Ritesh had no single hit on his credit... yet he was only one credited for EV's success... am sure thats not going to be th case with varun... forum has remained generous for him so far...
moreover VD's brother will make sure to give an edge to him.. character/screen-space wise...

If the film opens and does well the credit will be Varun's. If it flops then discredit will be John's.

I am guessing that would depend on who justified their character more onscreen. Personally I feel John would do this character better as action is what suits him the best. And if Rocky Handsome turns out to be a hit then I think Dishoom would be majorly pushed on and promoted on John's name.
