Most people who read my posts would by now know that I am an advocate of freewill. But we have to realize when freewill becomes selfishness and results in dereliction of our duty. And today I would touch upon the story of Ganga to highlight this point.
Ganga the daughter of himavan could purify anything and everything. She had the capability to wash away sins, reform even an asura. And rightly said she was a woman of free will. She couldnt be trapped anywhere.
When she was called to Devlok to perform her duty she went without hesitation. But when a man wanted her to come to earth so that the sins of his ancestors could be washed away, she didnt like it.

She decided by taking her destructive form, by coming in full force she can make this man tell her he didnt want her. Here Ganga was using her power against her dharma or duty. Because Bhagirath was no ordinary man. He had done a lot of penance for the sake of his ancestors. He only wanted moksha for them. And only Ganga could give them that. As I already said to neglect a plea is the biggest sin when you have power to address the plea.

Ganga had the power to address Bhagirath's earnest plea for the moksha of his ancestors. Still she decided not to do it. And to this woman who thought can get away by using her power neglecting her duty Mahadev showed she cannot. He trapped her in his locks, reduced her power. She was made to understand her duty by this action of Mahadev and Shanker made her follow Bhagirath and do her duty towards the man kind.

So Ganga's story is a reminder that use your freewill judiciously. Never become proud of it. Because there will be one Mahadev to trap you and cut your free will if you use it for dereliction of your duty.

Every woman has to understand it. She is power. Shakthi herself has submitted lovingly to Mahadev who respects and loves her equally and places immense trust on her that she will use her freewill judiciously. And Shakthi for all the power she possess ensures she never breaks this trust of Mahadev. That is the relation of Purush and Prakriti.

Prakriti should never use her destructive form for harming innocents or for neglecting duty. If they do so they are breaking the trust of Purush and of course consequences will happen the way it happened for Ganga.

Well said Shruthi, while free will should not be exercised at the cost of duty, it is also true that Ganga represents the free will of the nature, that can never be entirely tamed, whenever we try to do, prakriti may chose to exercise her free will and then the outcome will be unpredictable and disastrous !
The story of Ganga and Bhagirtah is also a representative of the eternal tussle between man and nature - the quest of men to change the course of nature for personal needs.

Unless we do it with humility and responsibility and provide nature with a safe and alternate channel, we will be causing loss and destruction

@Arshics yes only Mahadev could do what he did to Ganga. And the reason he did was because Bhagirath as a man respected Ganga. he was not taking her wilfully or with force. But by doing the penance.

Truly
Your power comes with responsibility
And when u land to the position of responsibility you may have choices and will but its certainly important to address to the wishes of people as now it becomes are duty .
And truly the person In power should be humble , like the nature which has all the power , but yet it fulfills all our needs

Awesome post Shruthi! 👏
Now that u talked about freewill, about the trust factor between purush and prakriti... these are in direct correlation with Sita Rama...

I have always held on to the opinion that Sita alone, if ever had taken on her real form, was capable of killing Ravana and destroy the Lanka legacy. But she didn't use her power or showed off her might. Instead she showed her free will and strength in the form of her immense trust and patience. She waited day and night for her husband to rescue her. She knew very well not to misuse her power. And her husband in turn also knew, in the back of his mind, that she will not misuse her power in the name of free will or anything. This is strictly my opinion though.

I m yet to watch the epi, and with this post of yours, I think it should be a very good one!

@Anu you are right. In Rajagopalachari's version of Ramayan he tells that Hanuman after burning Lanka understands that Sita's power of chastity is enough to burn the entire Lanka along with Raavan. But instead of doing that she showed inner strength making her husband do his duty towards her and towards dharma. She was a lady who knew dharma very well.
And even Panchali had the power to punish Dussashan as we have to know her call does bring Lord Krishna, but she too wanted her husband's to do their duty towards her and towards dharma.

@Shruthi & Arshics, It is not just Ganga had the free will but she was after purifying the heaven, she was too proud of her strength and that is when she was approached by Bhagirath to come down to earth to give Moksh to his ancestors. the proud Ganga who knew once gone to Earth, their is no way for her to go back to heaven (lower area to higher area) carelessly asked him, she is ready to go with him but will he and his earth can bear her force. This enraged Lord Shiv and that is when Lord Shiv decided to imprision her in his hair where she was finding it suffocating. But Bhagirath yet again had to approach Lord SHiv to release Ganga so that his wish is fulfilled and Shiv released her as small stream and even then her force was not reduced completely and she washed away Rishi juhnu's Ashram and the angry rishi drank her completely and with more prayers from Bhagirath, he released Ganga as beam from his ears and by then Ganga had learnt her lesson that when ever she shows her destructive power, the same will be out powered by some one stronger than her and will make her captive. Hence if she has to be free and to be worshipped for her power, she has to be in her limits and do good to the needy. And her name Jahnavi is because she became the daughter of Rishi Juhnu, Bhagirathi because she followed Bhagiratha.

Thanks Jaya. Yes I also remember that even after Shiv released Ganga, something else happened. Was not sure of it. Good to hear that story also. Yes power has to be used correctly.
