Part 12
And they meet again
Geet and Brij landed at Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport at Dumdum. Generally Geet takes a flight to Bagdogra and takes a bus or hires a car from there to Darjeeling but this time she wanted to do things differently. Yes, she had taken the way longer not to forget hectic way to travel but she wanted to prolong the journey.
Brij had insisted on joining Geet for her one last visit to Darjeeling. As the siblings walked to the baggage area Brij cleared his throat trying to break Geet's thought process.
" Geetu!"
"Yes Veerji. Sorry, I was just a bit distracted."
"Why don't you get us coffee while I collect your bag."
"Hmm."
Brij observed Geet walking. She was disturbed. In fact he himself was dreading this particular journey. How do you explain a six year old about the complications of divorce? Still he wanted to be there for Geet. So what if he couldn't explain Muski anything? He can be there even if it was pointless. Sometimes the best thing we can do for our families is just be there for them.
Brij hardly noticed where he was going resulting in a collision. Rubbing his arms he looked up. Without really noticing he muttered a hasty sorry and passed with the intention of getting to the baggage belt.
But a whisper of a long forgotten voice stopped him on his tracks.
"Brij!!"
Brij turned as he watched Naintara staring at him. Gone was the beautiful girl he had fallen for in his college days. There stood a woman worn out by responsibilities. Her long luscious hairs had lost their shine with the assault of busy life he supposed. She has got few wrinkles at the corner of her eyes. The girl he knew had always had impeccable dress sense. His Tara loved dressing up but the woman in front of him seemed to hardly care for what she wears. She seemed to have aged a lot more than her real age.
"Brij Handa!"
"Tara!"
It was so easy to read her. The name Tara' could still make her eyes sparkle, he noticed.
Brij didn't know what to say. He was completely at loss of words yet his eyes feasted on the opportunity. Worn out and aged, Tara was still as beautiful as she had been when he first met her.
"I never thought I would ever meet you again Brij."
"Honestly Tara, I don't know what to say."
There was again that silence. Fifteen years is a long time. What do you ask your long lost lover? Tara seemed to be at loss of words as well. Finally after what seemed like an eternity she finally spoke.
"You are coming from Mumbai?"
"Yeah! You?"
"I am coming from Bangalore. Want to go and collect the bags?"
Brij nodded and they both proceeded towards the baggage belt. Brij did not have much luggage so it was only one small bag of Geet's he picked from the conveyor belt. His own things were with him in a small laptop bag. This was supposed to be a very short trip just to shift Muskaan to Mumbai.
Naintara joined Brij soon. She had a lot of questions for him. But it was awkward. She hadn't been prepared for this encounter yet now that she met him he wanted to steal few forbidden memories. It was wrong for her to react like this seeing Brij. She is married but she couldn't help. The passion she had thought had died became alive the moment her eyes met his.
Brij was just thinking about how to begin talking again when Geet came with his coffee and began speaking.
Geet:"Here's your coffee. I think we should just get a prepaid taxi, less hassle that way. Our train for NJP leaves from Sealdah station in the afternoon. I guess we can have lunch here before leaving."
Brij was only half listening Geet as he observed wheels turning on Naintara's head. Geet didn't utter the word veerji'. Tara is trying to guess their relationship and is coming to wrong conclusions.
As if confirming his suspicions Tara's expressions turned guarded and she cleared her throat.
Tara:" It was nice meeting you Brij but I think I should get going."
Brij reacted instinctively. He could not let his Tara go away without explaining. He grabbed her wrist and said," Wait Tara!"
Geet had watched their interaction. There was something extremely intimate about them even if they had not really touched each other except that one wrist grab. But the name explained everything.
Geet:" Tara? As in, Naintara?"
Tara:" Yes. I should really be going. Judging by the fact that you know my name I am sure Brij told you about our past. We just met...accidentally. But I need to leave."
Geet:" Why would you leave? It has been what, fifteen years? You both must have tons of things to talk about."
Tara:" I really can't intrude any longer Mrs. Handa."
Comprehension dawned upon Geet that Naintara had mistaken her for Brij's non-existent wife. It would have been funny if not for the immense pain in Naintara's eyes as she spoke the word Mrs. Handa.' Geet is familiar with that kind of pain. Smiling warmly she began speaking.
Geet:" I am Miss Handa, not Mrs. Handa. And in reality, you need not fear. You had been the only woman in his life."
Tara:" I don't understand."
Brij:" Tara, this is Geet, my baby sister, the one I spoke to you about. We are going to Darjeeling to get her daughter from hostel and shift permanently to Mumbai. And Geetu is right. I didn't marry so there really is no Mrs. Handa."
Tara let go of the breath she didn't know she was holding. Yet the fact that Brij did not marry did not sit well with her. She had wanted Brij to be happy, as happy he can be without her, not lonely and miserable.
Geet realized that they both needed to talk, preferably without any kind of intrusion from her end.
Geet:" Naintara, do you stay in Kolkata?"
Tara:" No, I am here for some work. I will leave in few days."
Geet:" Great. Veerji, you stay back here."
Brij:" Geetu, that's impossible. I can't let you handle muski alone. You need someone there with you."
Geet:" I am handling Muskaan relatively alone from the day she was born veerji. You need to stay back and talk."
Brij:" The train journey would be hectic and you should not travel alone."
Geet:" No offence veerji, but this is not the first time I will travel alone. And I know I can handle this. For past ten years I am a frequent traveller of this route. I know you want to stay, your eyes says so. But most importantly you need to stay."
Brij:" Did you even think that Tara might not need me to stay?"
Geet smiled. She knew what it was Brij feared. The fear of rejection can be great.
Geet:" I am sure she wants to talk as well. I know I would have wanted to had I been in her shoe."
Brij:" You are my baby sister Geetu, you just had a divorce from a relationship of ten years. You have been given the gruesome task of explaining a six year old about divorce and its implication. I cannot let you handle that alone. You are my family Geetu, and family sticks together in times of need."
Geet:" Veerji, you have wasted away your life for family. You let the only woman you love go away for your family. You have always been there for each one of us as the perfect son, brother or brother in law. It's high time we be there for you. Do something for yourself once in your life veerji. I don't know, you are staying back and talking to Naintara. You both need that."
Brij:" But Geetu... What about you? "
Geet:" Some journeys are meant to be made alone Veerji."
Geet smiled and looked at Tara.
Geet:" Goodbye Naintara. If things would have been different then you would have been my bhabhi. You can't turn back Time and change things but you both need to talk. Use this opportunity. Not everyone is lucky to have this."
Geet gave a stern look to Brij and said," Don't lose this chance and for once in your life be selfish veerji. I am leaving. Will text you once I reach."
Brij watched Geet walk away and knew that he needed to talk.
Brij:" Umm sorry about Geetu. She can be forceful sometimes. You don't need to feel pressured to talk or anything."
Tara:" So, you don't want to talk?"
Brij:" Yes I do. I just don't want to pressurize into anything, even talk."
Tara smiled; her first genuine smile in a long time.
Tara:" Your sister was right Brij."
Brij could hear the slight teasing tone of Tara's he had missed for fifteen years.
Brij:" About what?"
Tara smiled cheekily before saying," For once in your life you should be selfish and grab the opportunity."
Brij smiled endearingly." Then I won't really be the man you fell for in the first place."
And just like that with one sentence Tara fell in love again. Fifteen years of separation felt meaningless as they stared into each other's eyes.
*****
Geet boarded the kanchanjungha express. She had a lower berth and Brij's upper berth was going to be empty. Geet was glad that she had forced Brij veerji to stay. Even after all these years the love they had for each other was evident just by watching them.
When first Brij told her about Naintara Geet had her doubts. If Naintara had truly loved Brij how could she have married someone else? Had she really loved Brij?
But just by watching them her every doubt seemed silly. Their love was evident. She felt a strange ache for them. They should have been together. They were supposed to be together.
Musing about her brother's love and her own Geet dozed off. The train reached NJP at 3 in the morning. It was cold even if it was spring. The Tarai region had almost similar climate as that of the hill stations. Also, this year had marked one of the coldest winters for India.
She was worried about Muskaan but in few hours she would reach to Muskaan. Geet had thought that Brij would be there with her so she had chosen this particular way but now that she was alone she started worrying a bit. Anyway, she cannot leave the station before it is at least 5 a.m. so she roamed around.
After getting a steaming cup of tea she stood and watched people. She was deep in her thoughts when a voice broke her out of her reverie.
"I don't believe this, we meet again..."
Geet knew the voice. This man had never really left her thought after that one night if she is being honest with herself. Yet she had hoped they would never meet again. Turning back she came face to face with Maan Singh Khurana.
Hazel eyes met the chocolate ones of his and just like first time they met, they were again lost in each other's eyes.
