Just came across this article and found it to be very endearing. Hence, posting it here. 😳

SRK versus Dhanush

PARSHATHY J. NATH

Youngsters in the city debate between Dilwale and Thangamagan for the FDFS

COIMBATORE: KG Cinemas is a sea of youngsters. A hundred bikes are parked in front of the entrance. Cars honk angrily at the noisy youngsters who are obstructing their way and taking selfies. There are die-hard film buffs in the crowd, who have been waiting for hours to get hold of those morning show tickets and their faces glow with excitement as they wait for their favourite star's film to begin. All of them for Dilwale?" Well, not really. The crowd is for the Dhanush-starrer Thangamagan."Shah Rukh Khan is good, but Dhanush is the South Indian rock star," squeals Nandini Chandrasekar, a student of PSG College of Arts and Science. She and her friends are big Dhanush fans but they also watch Hindi films. "But, when it comes to first-day-first-show, the priority is always for Tamil cinema!"

SRK is a little too old-fashioned for a few others. They would rather watch Dhanush. "He is a perfect boy-next-door material," says a starry-eyed Subharanjani, who has also come with her friends.
However, there are also those who are loyal to King Khan. Like Anjana Ramesh, a bubbly college student. "I am a loyal supporter of Kolkata Knight Riders. And, come on, he is after all the King Khan! Of course, it will be a super-duper hit." But, she too says her first preference is Thangamagan.

G. Ayyappan, the operational manager of KG Cinemas, is hopeful about Dilwale's collection. "A Shah Rukh Khan film is our top priority. We have allotted it Screen 1, which is one of the largest screens in the theatre, with 545 seats. We are hopeful that the film will make money. A preview was screened yesterday in the Central Theatre. We have received a good response."

The situation inside the film hall is quite different from the lukewarm response outside. There are around 300 people and most are youngsters. As the titles roll, there are wolf whistles and applauses. The audience grow even more animated when Kajol appears and a magical love story unfolds in a picturesque Bulgaria amid flying cars and men clad in dark suits.

There are more whistles during Gerua'. There are catcalls every time there is a romantic scene between Kajol and Shah Rukh Khan. Kajol wins over the audience, especially when she strides on the screen like a female don, revolver in hand and a squad of gangsters for company.

"I loved the flying cars and action scenes. Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol look so young and good together," says Kunal a college student during the interval. For many, it was like being back to the good old times of Kuch Kuch Hota Hain and Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge. Steffi Katherine and Kribhashini Jayakumar, two die-hard fans of the onscreen couple, had not even told their parents that they were coming for the movie. "We could never imagine missing this film. And, it is indeed worth all the hype!"

However, the magic does not stay for long. Post-interval, the audience's attention span peters off. They twiddle their thumbs, check their phones and pass comments during slapstick humour scenes that fall flat. There are yawns and cries of despair as Varun Dhawan, Kriti Sanon, Varun Sharma take up more screen space than Kajol and Shah Rukh Khan in the second half.

However, the SRK-Kajol romance keeps the audience hooked till the end. Even though, the melodrama gets a tad too much, they actually wait for the last credit song, Tukur Tukur' to finish before leaving the hall. "It was 100 per cent satisfying. It is a typical Shetty film, with humour and action. We loved the cars in the films," says Shashyanth Ram, a college student.
As we emerge out of the theatre, there is already a queue for the next show. We overhear a set of youngsters debating whether they should go for Diwale or not. It looks like they too did not get tickets for Thangamagan and are settling for the Shetty flick as a second option. If not for anything else, this set of crowd "who are desperate to watch any movie" might help DDilwale rake its moolah in the local theatres of Coimbatore.

Dilwale Day 1 (Friday) Box Office Collection Update

2 min read

Shah Rukh Khan's Dilwale has picked up at the box office noon onwards on Friday, recording occupancy as high as 80 - 85% in circuits like Mysore and West Bengal. The business even at the rain-affected Chennai is extraordinary - most shows of the film are sold out for the day.

As far as Day 1 is concerned, except the state of Maharashtra, there simply hasn't been any contest. Dilwale is leading by a distance, both at multiplexes and single-screens all over the country.

The reports coming in for Dilwale are good, response from critics has been mixed (Check outDilwale Critics Review page).

The film is now looking at a 20 crore plus total, which is excellent considering the fact that it lost about 40% of its shows at multiplexes due to the release of Bajirao Mastani. Both films have lost a huge chunk of business on Day 1 itself and Dilwale with a solo release would have challenged the highest non-holiday opening of Dhoom 3. Bajirao Mastani would have probably collected around 10% more than Bhansali's last film Ram Leela - which collected Rs 15.73 crore on Day 1. The collections of Bajirao Mastani are set to be lower.

It remains to be seen if both films can recover the losses incurred on Day 1. The trend over the weekend will decide if Dilwale can go on to be a huge grosser and if Bajirao Mastani can recover its costs.

The only major beneficiary of the clash today has been Indicine. We have recorded our highest single day, with nearly 9 lakhs visitors today - 4-5 times more traffic from what we usually get in a day. With 3 hours to go before the day ends, we are set to hit the 10 lakh visitor mark for the first time. 🤣
