JIO MAMI 2015: Five films that influenced Varun Dhawan in life

Posted on: 05:16 PM IST Nov 05, 2015

Mumbai: In a very short span of time, Varun Dhawan has managed to garner a lot of praise for his performances and choice of films.

After a dream debut in 'Student Of The Year' where he played a rich brat who comes of age, Varun chose a typical Bollywood comedy like 'Main Tera Hero'. directed by his father David Dhawan, a film which was typically Dhawan comedy - Varun managed to nail the lovable rascal's role perfectly. He played a lover boy in Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania' in his third film. His fourth film was stark contrast from the previous films. 'Badlapur' was dark, gory and disturbing and had Varun playing a character older

than his actual age.

With such varied choice of films-Dhawan has managed to build a strong fan base. On second day of Jio MAMI 17th Mumbai Film Festival, Varun Dhawan talked about the five films that influenced him the most in life.

And just like the varied roles that he has essayed on screen, his favourite films differ majorly from each other.

Here are the five films that have influenced Varun Dhawan in life.

American Psycho: "I was 15 when I saw this film. I was in UK and a friend suggested me to watch it. I ended up watching it three times that night itself." Featuring Christian Bale and Jared Leto, the film was a balck comedy psychological thriller which showed investment bankers in a completely different light. Varun revealed that Bale was his favourite actor and how the film made him realize that as an actor he could play any role, be anything that he wants to be. "I started wearing a lot of suits after watching this film," added Varun cheekily.

Swarg: Varun Dhawan revealed that he had no idea that his father David Dhawan had directed the film which featured Rajesh Khanna, Govinda and Juhi Chawla. "I used to associate my father to only comedy films. One fine day I was watching Swarg' on TV and my dad walked in, saw me watching it and asked me "You like this film? You know who made this film?" When I told him I have watched the film too many times and how I love it, he told me he had directed it," said the actor. Varun stated that how he loved the rags to riches theme of the film and that this was one of Govinda's finest performances.

The Lion King: "I was fortunate to watch the film and the broadway version as well," said Varun and added, "Each time I watch the film, I see a new thing. I recently got to know that The Lion King' is loosely based on Shakespeare's Hamlet'. Always felt the film was much like our Hindi films. It spoke about family values, about inheritance, about legacy- stuff that our films narrate a lot." Varun also stated that this is one film that both he and his brother, director Rohit Dhawan love.

Guide: Having watched it countless times in life, Dhawan said the Vijay Anand film, featuring Dev Anand and Waheeda Rehman, had answers to all of life's questions. " I read Dev Anand's biography recently and learnt that Dev sahib went to great lengths to make RK Narayan write the script for Guide. No body puts in that much effort anymore to make the story that authentic," quipped the young actor.

Andaz Apna Apna: Who wouldn't love this Rajkumar Santoshi film? "It is everyone's favourite film. I always thought it was ahead of its time. I believe it did not work well initially. But each character is so good, all the actors are brilliant in the film. I loved the chemistry that Aamir and Salman bhai shared in the film. I wish I can share a similar chemistry and camaraderie with an actor in some film," said the actor.

^ Because it's a classic film. These newbies aren't the only ones. My brother hates Hindi films but he'll watch this any day.

I love The Lion King (I watched it with my baby cousin the other day and still teared up when Simba is trying to wake up Mufasa X_X). Andaaz Apna Apna will always be one of my top favorites - loved the comedy, Amar-Prem, Crime Master Gogo, Yeh teja teja kya hain 😆 I feel uplifted every time I watch it.

I can't explain it. The craze.

AAA was made before I was born, and I probably watched it at some point in the 2000s. But it just stuck with me. The feeling is like watching your favourite actor dance or sing or say a good dialogue.

Ah i guess some things don't have answers. 😆
