Started a new series about battle of Haldighati.
It will be detailed in the same manner as the Battle of Chittor series, made earlier.

Posted part-1 of that series. This article is by Radhika.

The Battle of Haldighati is perhaps the most famous battle that Maharana Pratap fought against the Mughal forces led by Raja Man Singh.

The outcome of the battle of Haldighati was indecisive. Both parties claimed victory in their accounts but none had the strength to pursue and vanquish the other immediately after the fierce assault, as we will see in the succeeding articles on the Haldighati battle.

This article marks the beginning of the series of articles, which will talk about the Battle of Haldighati, just like a detailed series was posted regarding the Battle of Chittor.

2 other articles, related to Haldighati, have been previously posted. Their links are :

What is relatively little known is that prior to the Haldighati battle, Akbar tried to win over Maharana Pratap by sending proposals for treaties 4 times through his closest confidantes! Whether he was really trying for peace, was trying to subjugate Mewar easily, or was trying to prove that Pratap was an obstinate man not in favour of peace, is a matter of debate - as will be seen by the conditions he kept for the treaty.

This article presents an overview of all the 4 attempts made by Akbar to reach an agreement with Maharana Pratap, after the latter ascended the throne of Mewar (1572) and before the battle of Haldighati (1576) was fought. History shows that all these embassies of Akbar were received with due regard by the Maharana but none could bring the desired result of a long-lasting truce between the two rivals.

Akbar sent proposals through Jalal Khan Qurchi (1572), Raja Man Singh of Amer (1573), Raja Bhagwan Das of Amer (1573), Raja Todar Mal (1573).

The article also talks about possible reasons behind Akbar's attempts at truce with Mewar & possible reasons for Maharana Pratap's reluctance to submit to the Mughals.

thnx abhay and radhika hats off for u both putting so much efforts in giving d details about one of d most imp battle fought btw Akbar and pratap...njoyed reading ur post...there r some things which u have mentioned in ur post like pratap refusing to eat with maan singh etc I remember reading it in d james todd book named annals and antiquities of rajasthan...there he has mentioned it how pratap refused to eat with maan singh and also he had ordered to sprinkle ganga water around places where maan singh was sitting something like that... 😕 I was actually surprised reading it and was wondering how much truth does these incidences have and whether d author had done lil modifications in it... 😕 also found interesting where u have mentioned about d possible reasons of pratap refusing to submit to Mughals as it was against his ideals principles and also its obvious that no one would love to loose their independence and become subordinate of other ruler or emperor...hatsoff to pratap for maintaining this attitude till his end... will b waiting for ur next part eager to read more from u both... 😛

Very entertaining and informative with strong relevance to the show. A slight disappointment that the post has come now when the show has ended, and people's interest has diminished somewhat, but still a very enjoyable read. Earlier we would have speculated how this scenario would have played in the serial, but of course that never happened.

Abhay and Radhika,

Thanks to you for the very interesting account of an important event in the history, beautifully presented.
Rana Pratap, being a shrewd politician as Akbhar , would definitely have guessed what was running in Akbhar's mind, when the latter sent his emissaries to him. In the JA show also we had a hint of Pratab's admiration for Akbhar in the Sukanya's wedding track. Also, we see how very tactful is Akbhar and how far he thinks in sending his Rajput associates to Pratap for peace negotiation! Very diplomatic!

May be it will be taken up in the sequel, Donjas :)

Presently the show on Sony is showing the Haldighati war track and those who are interested, can watch the track.

Anyway shows may come and go but history is something that continues to engage our minds in a timeless manner. :)

Dear Aunty

Both Pratap and Akbar were shrewd as well as tactful, stubborn and committed to their beliefs, and this is what makes their rivalry so interesting.

We hope you will continue to read the future posts in this series and share your insights with us. :)

Thanks Harshu!

Like we mentioned in the post, we will talk about the stories related to Pratap and Man Singh in a separate article.

It is really something to appreciate that Pratap stood up to Akbar and the mighty Mughal empire. He was a true-blue warrior who was ready to fight for his ideals rather than be cowed down by the enemy's strength and power.

We also look forward to your views on the future posts. :)

Very happy to see your presence on IF after what seems to be ages Radhika. 😊 😃

Will definitely share my thoughts to your concise, brilliant article over the weekend.

I am clumsily multitasking, (thanks to my snail-like speed) messing up at least two chores out of the five that I execute.

I hope to be free by this evening and will leisurely read and understand the information that you've shared, before replying.
