Part Two
While Kunj and Bubbly plotted, on the other side of town, another absurd conversation was taking place.
"Chinki," Twinkle gasped, clutching at her chest with one hand and fanning herself with a magazine with the other. "I think I have some sort of heart disease."
"That's ridiculous," Chinki snorted, not even bothering to look up from the latest issue of Filmfare. "You're only twenty-one. You're not overweight, and no one in your family has a history of heart illness. You're being delusional again Twinkle."
It was Friday, and as per tradition the two best friends were splurging on gourmet coffees while indulging in luxury spa treatments. They were relaxing in massage chairs in a corner, while getting their pedicures done and since the salon was fairly empty, Twinkle felt at ease to discuss her problem openly.
"No, you don't understand," Twinkle objected, glaring at her best friend. "This is serious. I'm not imagining the pain."
Chinki raised an eyebrow, but put down her magazine. "Okay, tell me your symptoms."
Twinkle rolled her eyes. "Chinki, you're not a doctor! You won't be able to give me an accurate diagnosis."
"Hey, my husband's a doctor okay!" Chinki protested. "I know enough. Now are you going to tell me or what?"
"Well," she began slowly, unsure of how to explain what she was feeling. "Sometimes my chest hurts."
"How often?" Chinki asked with a clinical sharpness that surprised Twinkle.
Taken aback by her friend's sudden seriousness, Twinkle cleared her throat slightly before continuing. "Errr, almost every other hour during the day, but it's usually okay in the evenings," she answered.
"Hmmm," Chinki was attentive, "and does anything trigger the pain? Physical exertion? Stress?"
"Well, usually when I think about Kunj, my heart starts to race," Twinkle explained, looking confused. "And then when he doesn't call, my chest feels like it's caving in. Is that normal?"
"I'm not sure," the shorter woman folded her arms over her chest and scrutinised Twinkle's bemused disposition. "It's not heartburn is it? Are you taking any medication? What seems to cure it?" She fired one after the other.
"I don't know," Twinkle shrugged exasperatedly. "It gets better around five every day ..."
"What happens at five?" Chinki jumped in curiously.
"Nothing really...Kunj comes home from the office." She replied begrudgingly. Talking about it aloud, made her realise that essentially, her problem seemed to revolve around her husband.
"Interesting," Chinki murmured thoughtfully, before urging her to continue, "okay, go on."
"On the weekends, the pain's almost never there. But sometimes when Kunj touches me, I get this sharp twinge in my chest and my palms start to get sweaty. Then I feel breathless, and sometimes when he looks at me, I feel so hot like I'm burning up."
Even as she spoke, Twinkle was trying to connect the dots. It was all beginning to make sense to her and she felt the fell swoop of relief as she began to recognise her symptoms. Why hadn't she understood sooner? She almost jumped in her seat as she turned to face her best friend, splashing warm water at the bored looking pedicurist.
"Chinki, I have it! I know what's wrong with me!"
"What?" Chinki asked excitedly. "Are you thinking what I'm thinking?"
"I think I am!" Twinkle declared victoriously. "I'm allergic to Kunj!"
"You're in love with Kunj!" Chinki proclaimed excitedly at the same time.
The two stared at each other in surprise - both shocked by the other's findings.
"That's impossible," Twinkle snorted contemptuously. "I can't be in love with him. That's ridiculous. Besides, I've worked it out. It's just a stupid allergy."
Chinki rolled her eyes. "Twinkle," she began patiently, "you can be allergic to many things, but not people."
"Well, maybe I'm a first." She replied stubbornly.
Chinki raised an eyebrow in silent challenge, "Alright then, let's examine your symptoms more closely. How do you feel when he's around you?"
"Peaceful," she replied instantly. "Safe, like there's nothing that could hurt me."
"What about the pain?"
She thought about it for a moment, before shaking her head slowly. "No, I have no pain when he's around."
"See!" Chinki cried triumphantly. "It can't be an allergy! How can Kunj be the trigger and the cure? It's impossible."
Twinkle was stumped now. Nothing made sense anymore, and her head was spinning. "God, Chinki, if it's not a heart disease, or an allergy then what's wrong with me?"
"Just accept it Twinkle," Chinki smiled at her best friend. "You're in love."
"No, that's impossible." Twinkle persisted adamantly.
Chinki sighed. This was going to be a real uphill march. "Okay, how often do you think about him?"
"All the time," Twinkle blurted out honestly, before quickly trying to cover her tracks, "but that's only because he's so annoying. He's like a fly, I can't get rid of."
Chinki barely refrained from rolling her eyes. "And how do you feel when other women stare at him?"
"Like I'm going to claw their eyeballs out with my bare nails." Twinkle muttered savagely, envisioning the scenario.
Chinki made a mental note to herself, to never again look at her best friend's husband, lest she suffer permanent blindness. "What about when he smiles at you?"
"Like my insides are melting into a puddle." She confessed tiredly, "but that can't possibly mean I'm in love. I mean, I never felt like this with Yuvi."
"That's because you never loved him! You were in love with the idea of being in love. It was a stupid infatuation." Chinki explained.
"I..." Twinkle was so confused. "How is this possible?"
Chinki groaned with disbelief. How could this girl be so clueless? She decided that it was time to deliver a strong push. There was no other way. "Alright, how would you feel if Kunj wanted to divorce you?"
"What?" Twinkle stared at her best friend in shocked horror. "Why would you say that Chinki? Why would Kunj ever want to divorce me?"
"Well, you're rude to him - borderline obnoxious," Chinki pointed out bluntly. "You keep accusing him of assaulting you, when truthfully he's actually saved us both from being assaulted by your Neanderthal of an ex-boyfriend. You've kicked him out of his own bedroom and you're constantly insulting him, even when he's helping you. He probably thinks you're using him. Face it Twinkle, he's a good guy and that's why he's keeping you around. If I were your husband - I'd divorce you in a heartbeat."
Although Chinki felt awful about speaking so bluntly with Twinkle, she knew she had to. Someone had to tell it to her like it was. Someone needed to make her see the reality of her behaviour. She stared at Twinkle, who looked flushed, eyes reddening. "Twinkle, what's wrong?"
"I'm an awful wife," she admitted quietly. "I'm rude and terrible and I give him so much attitude, because somewhere inside - I know that he'll take it. That ever after everything, he'll still be there for me. But for how long?"
"Twinkle?" Now, Chinki was a little afraid. She'd never seen her friend look so dazed or broken. It was like something had just clicked into place and she was finally beginning to see things more clearly. This was slightly worrisome - Chinki didn't know how to deal with mature Twinkle.
"Chinki," Twinkle's eyes were glistening with unshed tears. "I don't think I could live without him. I'm in love with him, aren't I?"
She nodded gently, and then nudged her best friend. "Embrace it Twinkle. You're in love, and it's the best feeling in the world."
Leaning back into her chair. Twinkle looked heavenward and closed her eyes. "Why Babaji? Why? Why do I hurt him, when I actually love him?"
Whistling lowly, Chinki looked like she had hit the jackpot. "This is fantastic Twinkle. You're in love! But isn't it a bit soon? I mean, you've only been married for two months. I'll admit your husband is a saint, but I can't believe you - you're actually in love!"
"It's kind of hard not to, when I have to live with him," Twinkle snapped, more furious at herself for being so weak willed. "Have you seen the man? Do not see how attractive he is?"
"True," Chinki conceded. "He is quite handsome. Almost model like. Tall, fair-skinned. Chiselled jaw-line. Bet he has a six-pack too, and God, that mouth! That mouth looks like it could do...things..."
"That's enough!" Twinkle interjected sharply, flexing her fingers.
Chinki gulped and carried on hastily, "not that I was looking or anything. All hypothetically, of course."
"Besides if it was just a physical attraction, I could still deal. This is more serious," Twinkle continued, "this is all his fault. Maybe if he wasn't so nice, and caring then this wouldn't have happened. He wears his heart on his sleeve. You'd be crazy not to love him."
Twinkle looked furious now, and Chinki instinctively scooted away as her best friend continued ranting. Even the young woman working at her feet looked alarmed.
"I see him everywhere, all the time - even when he isn't there, and I'm constantly thinking about him. I accidentally called my mother Kunj the other day. She looked like she'd won the lottery. He's driving me crazy." She sat there, clutching at her head. Overwhelmed by her feelings, she didn't know how each emotion mingled into another.
"Okay, so now that we've established that you're crazy for him. What are we going to about it? Has he hinted at anything?"
"He bought me ten kilos of butter from The Butter Club," Twinkle gushed. "It was so romantic."
"You don't even eat butter," Chinki stared at her incredulously.
"I do now." Twinkle declared happily, "it was such a sweet gift. I was so happy that day. I can't believe I didn't realise my feelings until today."
"You always were a bit slow," Chinki jibed playfully.
Twinkle ignored her and continued reflecting, but more softly now. "Like the other night, he came home late and I was worried sick. I felt like my whole world would just end if something happened to him." She looked sad again, recalling the memory and still feeling her hands grow cold with fear.
"It's official," Chinki sighed dramatically. "You're doomed. You've got it bad for him."
Troubled, Twinkled nodded in agreement, "we're going to need ice-cream. It'll help ease the pain."
Concerned, Chinki nudged her. "Chest hurting again?"
She nodded again, sadly. "It usually does when I remember that he could never love me back."
Letting the suddenly mellow mood fester, she treaded carefully. "How do you know?"
"Come on Chinki. Be serious. How could he ever love me? Don't you remember Alisha?" Staring at her clean feet glumly, Twinkle recalled the tall, elegant beauty who was her husband's first love. Voluptuous, ambitious and confident, Alisha had been Kunj's dream woman. Even though Alisha was no longer in the picture, Twinkle felt burdened by the knowledge of her influence on Kunj. How could she compete with the past? How could she compete with a memory of a lost love?
"Of course, I do. She was a trashy gold digger," Chinki snorted, flipping her long hair over a shoulder. "Not only that, she was trying to break up his family. There's no way Kunj jeeju has any feelings left for her after what she did."
The weight suddenly lifted off Twinkle's shoulders. Chinki had an uncanny way of putting things into perspective. "You're right, but what do I do now?"
"You have to talk to him. He deserves to know how you feel." Chinki motivated her. "In fact, do it tonight. Seduce him into submission."
"You think?"
"Absolutely." Chinki nodded with conviction. "Wear that gift I bought you! He won't be able to resist!"
There was a moment of silence as Twinkle steeled her nerves. She was going to talk to him tonight. There would be no going back. It was time to be serious about her life. It was time to be honest with herself and the people she loved.
So occupied was she with her mental pep talk, she didn't notice the pedicurist unscrewing the lid of a nail polish bottle, until it fell to floor with a clatter.
Twinkle looked down and was immediately irritated. "No, not that colour!" She yelped at the girl who was about to apply a fresh layer of nail paint to her clean, clipped toe nails. "Yellow. I want that Yellow. Not Banana Yellow, I want the Butter Yellow."
Flabbergasted Chinki stared at her best friend, who was behaving like a lunatic as she argued over nail polish. "Twinkle, what difference does it make? They're both yellow."
"There's a huge difference," Twinkle huffed, haughtily folding her arms across her chest in a picture of defiance. "Kunj likes butter."
"Oh brother."
