Dr.M Balamuralikrishna: Maestro of Carnatic music

By: Dhanyasree .M

"Music, when it flows from Balamuralikrishna you can realise what the crazy gopies felt in their ecstasy of divine Love. To be born with music in his heart, to hold a recital at his tender age of only eight Deepavalies, to be at once a master in many instruments apart from his unfailing purity of voice, tal and rag: these are indeed preciously rare in one single person unless he is a genius."

Swami Chinmayananda.

Padmabhushan Sangeetha Kalanidhi Dr. M. Balamuralikrishna is one of the towering figures in contemporary carnatic music. He has established his rare talent as a composer, poet, vocalist, multi-instrumentalist, innovator and musical iconoclast in carnatic music. With his crystal clear enunciation of the lyrics, the floating ever-fresh quality of vocalism, sparkling creativity, voice modulation and unpredictable swara-combination, Balamuralikrishna has mesmerized his audience all over the world.

Mangalampalli Balamuralikrishna was born on 6th July 1930 at Sankaraguptam in Andhra Pradesh. His father Mangalampalli Pattabhiramayya was an eminent flutist and his mother Suryakanthamma was a notable veena artist. His parents initially named him as 'Murali Krishna' and later a distinguished Hari Katha performer Musunuri Satyanarayana gave the prefix'Bala' to his name.

The young Bala Muralikrishna never had the luck to learn music from his mother as she had passed away when he was only 15 years old. However when his father taught the other disciples, he started to imbibe the nuances of good music at the age of two. Pattabhiramayya soon entrusted Balamuralikrishna to 'Gayaka Sarvabhauma' Parupalli Ramakrishnayya Pantulu who trained this rare talent to the divine pinnacles of music.Balamuralikrishna, fifth in the line of direct disciples of Saint Tyagaraja gave his first full-fledged performance at the age of eight, during the Sadguru Arandhana Utsava. Balamuralikrishna discontinued his formal education in class 6th due to continuous concerts and dedicated completely to music.

Balamuralikrishna gifted the carnatic music with innovations in Tala Systems. He introduced new principles to Tala systems and credited it with over 300-400 compositions and many ragas. His composition of ragas include Mahati, Sumukham, Trisakthi, Omkari, Rohini, Pratimadhyamavathi, Janasammodini, Manorama, Vallabhi, Lavangi etc. He also composed Mahadevasutham, Sree Sakala Ganadhipa, Gam Gam Ganapathim and the famous thyagaraja Pancharatnamala (Comprsising Endaro mahaanu bhavulu, Sadinchane, Duduku Gala, Jagadaanada Karaka, Kanakan ruchira).

Awards were showered over him for this wonderful talent. 'Gana Sudhakara', 'Gayaka Sikhamani', 'Sur Singar', 'Geeta Kala Bharati', Sangeet Natak Akademi Award, 'Sangeetha Kalanidhi', Padmashri and Padma Vibushan are some of them. He had the rare opportunity to be featured as a soloist with an award winning British Choir, performing the Gitanjali Suite from Rabindranath Tagore's Nobel Prize winning poetry and composed by Dr.Joel.he was chosen as the 'Wisdom man of the year in 1992'. The famous Indian Universities Andhra University, Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University, Sri Venkateswara University and the University of Hyderabad bestowed the PhD, DSc and Dlitt respectively to this rare talent. He is a state musician of the states of Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh, Asthana Vidwan of Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanam, Sringeri Peetam and Anjenaya Swami Temple, Nanganallur.

Balamuralikrishna is very versatile and apart from being a vocalist, he plays the kanjira, mrdangam, viola and violin. With an aim to share his talent, he has established 'Academy of Performing Arts and Research' in Switzerland. With an objective to develop culture and art he has established 'MBK Trust', wher he is carrying out an extensive research on music therapy. 'Vipanchee', A dance and music school is a part of this Trust and is run by his managing trustee Kalaimamani Saraswati. Balamuralikrishna's perfect control at all times in all the three octaves and his wonderfully vibrant, widely ranged, magnetic voice will enchant his listeners forever.

if this isn't a most beautiful manifestation of Sat-Chit-Ananda, what is? true, divinity flows through each one of us, but through a chosen few, it flows that much more exuberantly...
