Chapter 48

Breaking the shell

Your pain is the breaking of the shell

That encloses your understanding

-Khalil Gibran

What are you saying Aman? Chhotey's life is in danger?! Shyamji's is planning to take revenge! Oh my God! What will happen now?" Anjali wailed, tears streaming down her cheeks.

Aman felt most distressed to have to put Anjali through this pain but he knew only Anjaliji could force her brother to come back to Nani's house in Kolkata. So he had taken the first flight to Kolkata to meet Anjali.

"Calm down Anjaliji," he said awkwardly. "I assure you no harm will come to ASR!"

"And what about Khushi and her friend NK?" she demanded sobbing. "It was so foolish of me to send Chhotey after them. Have I put their life in danger too?" she stared at Aman with large terrified eyes.

Aman shook his head quickly, curbing the sudden urge to take her in his arms and soothe her frazzled nerves.

"As long as I am alive nothing can happen to ASR and his friends. Don't you believe me Anjaliji?" a nerve in his jaw twitched in anticipation of her answer.

Anjali was quiet for a moment and then she lifted her head and looked at Aman with luminescent eyes and said in a quiet voice, "I believe you Aman. I have always relied on you like Chhotey, and you have never failed us."

Aman suddenly realized he was holding his breath and he let it go in a rush. A smile spread across his face. Anjaliji had faith in him...what more could he ask her. She smiled slightly at him and Aman's heart picked up a beat. Oh my God! Have I gone nuts! What am I thinking! She's my boss' elder sister!

He cleared his throat by way of clearing his mind and said softly, "Anjali ji will you please call ASR and tell him to take the next flight out of Darjeeling along with Khushiji and her friend? I have made all the necessary arrangements."

"Okay Aman as you say..." Anjali picked up the phone to dial Arnav's number.

"And thank you Aman. I don't know what I would have done without you!" Anjali smiled at him in relief.

"Anything for you Anjali ji..." Aman mumbled lowering his gaze but Anjali had already turned away to dial her brother's number.

However, someone, standing in the shadows had heard Aman...

"Arnav stop, Arnav what are you doing? Wil you kill the man?" Khushi screamed as Arnav punched the reporter, Kamalesh Khabri again.

"Yes I will kill him," Arnav gritted bis teeth. "How dare he insult you and our relationship?"

"But he will die...let him go...I beg you," Khushi pleaded, squeezing his shoulder, begging him to control his rage.

Her touch ...that was all needed to halt Arnav in his tracks. He clenched his fist and dropped his hand to his side and pushed away Kamalesh Khabri who fell to the ground with a thud!

"You...you... will pay for this A...ASR! Kamlesh Khabri stammered wiping the blood trickling at the edge of his lips, eyeing Arnav nervously.

"I will trap you in away you will regret..." he said with more confidence as a group of fellow reporters advanced in his support.

"What the!" ASR bellowed and the advancing group ran helter skelter with their tail between their legs. Kamlesh Khabri closed his eyes in terror!

Arnav took a menancing step forward but Khushi entwined her fingers in his tightly and pulled him back. Her hazel eyes imploring him to let go.

Arnav turned to her. She looked pale and pulled back. Her eyes had lost her gleam, her lips its sheen. Arnav hated to see her like that! What have I done, he thought frustratingly. I always want to see Khushi cheerful but unwittingly always manage to make her sad!

Shyam's phone rang shrilly.

"Hello?"Shyam took another sip of the alcohol in his glass and slurred.

"Are you drunk?" Ajit shrieked at the other end.

Shya smiled coolly, "Hello Ajit chacha! How are you doing?"

Ajit barked at him, "Shut up Shyam! I did not call you up to exchange niceites with you! You know how much I had to pay the prison guard to make this call to you? Listen carefully Amma just told me they are showing Arnav on the television and..."

Shyam stopped him in mid sentence, "I know, I know. I have just set the ball rolling..."

"Meaning what?" Ajit asked him curiously.

"Well if you want me to spell out...I have made urgent arrangements to repeat th hot air balloon accident with Arnav..." he cackled.

There was a pause at the other end. "Okay, good. But if Amma calls you don't spell it out to her..."

"You don't even trust your own mother?" Shyam slurred.

"I don't even trust my right hand!" Ajit retorted.

"And what about Rahim chacha?"

"Don't worry, he is all ours. His niece, Naira, is eating out of my hand!" Shyam's laughter echoed in his hotel room in Darjeeling.

Arnav looked down in surprise as Khushi jerked away her hand from his clasp and started walking away from him.

The sun blinded his eyes as he saw her in a state of trance...

"Khushi?" Arnav called after her in surprise but she did not look back at him.

"Khushi!" Arnav caught hold of her wrist and yanked her to him his eyes blazing the sun's fire. "Where do you think you are going?" he hissed.

"Arnav don't create a scene again!" she said frustratingly, looking nervously at the reporters who were advancing towards them again. "Let us go from here!" she begged him.

"Why should we run away? What is our fault?! Did you hear what that reporter Kamlesh Khabri said about you...that's character aassination Khushi! And just because he is a media person he has no right to do and say anything he wants to!"

" I hate these *******!" he sweared.

Khushi squirmed. " Arnav by reacting to these people you are just giving them too much importance! They don't deserve it! I have a bad feeling about this...something I can't shake off...please let's go from here!"

Khushi's eyes were pleading.

"No way! I can't scamper away and let them win! " Arnav scowled. "You can go away if you want to!" he said his jaw hardening.

Khushi's shoulders slumped and she looked at him helplessly. " Oh Arnav! Everytime your temper soars I feel scared. You and your ego! Your anger...that will be the death of you!"

"Then I'd rather die...!

Khushi's heart came to a stand still.Tears rushed in hers eyes, and her fingers trembled against his lips pressing them, preventing him from uttering such unthinkable words again!

"No! Never ever say that Arnav!" she whispered, her hazel eyes moist and pleading, "Nothing bad can happen to you ..." her voice shook.

Arnav's anger melted away in her tears and the softness of her fingers on his lips spread a honeyed warmth inside him. Everytime she shed them her tears ripped his heart. He wanted to see her smile again and he knew how...

He looked deep into her eyes and teased her, "And how will you prevent that, hmm?"

She felt his lips stretching in a smile under her palm. He covered her fingers with his own, squeezing them gently and looking deep into her eyes and he rubbed his well shaped lips against them...in tiny kisses.

A wave of pleasure hit Khushi and she gasped in embarrassment.

"Arnav! There are people all around us," she said trying to pull away her hand.

"So!" he drawled dropping a moist kiss on her open palm, "As if I care!! Were you not telling me a minute ago not to give too much importance to these people!"

His eyes danced with mirth.

Khushi bit her lower lip to prevent her heart from beating crazily as he kissed the other palm.

Naira Usman handed over a steaming cup of tea to her uncle and sat down besides him and cleared her throat. "Rahim chacha you look upon me as your daughter, don't you?"

Rahim chacha peered at her over his cup and said, "Why are you asking me this question, Naira? You Know I have no other relative to call my own. After I was forced to leave Sheeshmahal," tears welled up in his eyes, "You are the only one who gave me shelter..."

Naira's thin lips curled. "Well then you will have no objection if we leave Darjeeling for a few days for an undisclosed location?"

Rahim chacha put down his cup on the plate with a clatter. "Move again Naira! I can't understand why do you have to shift so frequently?! What does your job entail? In so many years you have never told me a thing!"

"I have also told you uncle over and over again I am doing this for your good!"

"My good!" Rahim chacha raised his voice, "I have my suspicions Naira! Are you sure you are not taking money from that creep Ajit Malik again!" His body shook in anger.

Naira rolled her eyes! God the old man is agitated again! I hope he does not have another heart attack! She could not let her golden goose die so easily! So she crossed her heart and said in a sugary sweet voice, "Please don't hurt me by saying that chacha! After you warned me about the Maliks I have not kept in touch with them I swear!" She said in a feigned innocent voice, "Don't you believe me chacha?"

Rahim chacha nodded perfunctorily and left the room.

Khushi looked up at the vast blue skies! Her forehead creased in surprise! When they had arrived the sky seemed to be afloat with colouful gliders, but now there were onlya handful gliding around! How come!

"Hey Arnav did you notice..." she tugged Arnav's sleeve.

But Arnav only tightened his grip on her hand and said impatiently, "Hurry up Khushi, I can't wait to go up with you," he said looking up at the infinite blue with its assortments of flurry clouds.

The excitement in his voice was palpable and his eyes glinted, the sun's ray shone into his caramel orbs honeying them with sun kissed golden specks. His usually gelled hair blew in the breeze freely and Khushi felt like running her hand through their wavy thickness and ruffling them further. She smiled at her thoughts and happily allowed him to pull her behind him.

He does not look like a laad governor at all now, she thought merrily. Who could have imagined he was the same person who was ready to eat up Kamalesh khabri alive she chuckled.

Khushi studied him from under her eyelashes again. His face had softened, his eyes gleaming, his lips tender, he seemed excited and hey Devi Maiyya so gorgeously handsome!

Khushi's heart leapt to her throat.

"So what are my marks?" Arnav asked suddenly startling her.

"Huh? What?" Khushi asked confused.

Arnav smirked at her, " Come on...you have been drooling over me for quite sometime so what marks have you given me? Well let me tell you I will accept no less than a ten out of ten!" Arnav laughed and snaking his arm around her waist pulled her closer.

"Really Arnav!" Khushi punched his chest playfully. He was back to being the Laad governor he was! "You are such a pompous ass!"

"And that is why you love me!" Arnav drawled smirking.

Khushi's heart skipped a beat and then raced a marathon at the passionate look in his melting browns. Without warning he leaned forward and placed a soft kiss on her right cheek. Khushi's eyes widened like saucers and blood rushed into her cheeks, "No, no..." she lied in vain.

"I wish that was true Khushi. I wish you did not care about me so much..." he whispered against her hot cheek.

The strange feeling of something not right swept over Khushi again.

''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''

Back in Arnav's car two cell phones were ringing continuously. In their hurry to get away from the media, Arnav and Khushi had left their phones on the dashboard of the car!

" Chhotey is not picking up the phone Aman! Now I am really feeling scared!" Anjali threw down her phone on the huge rosewood table in the Raizada mansion in frustration and began to cry.

"Anjaliji! Please don't..." Aman stretched his arm to pat her shoulder but clenched his fist and dropped his arm to his side with a deep sigh.

"Anjali bitiya...!" he heard a voice behind him and was glad to see Nani emerge from the shadows to console Anjali. "Don't worry everything will be okay. Devi maiyya will protect Chhotey and Khushi bitiya!"

But Anjali only shook her head in despair and threw herself in Nani's arms.

Aakash and Payal entered the room and were startled to see Anjali in tears. Aman told them the entire story including his suspicion about Shyam.

Payal gasped, " I hope Khushi is safe..."

Aakash adjusted the glasses on his nose and said "Payalji I know my bhai, he will never let Khushiji down in any circumstances..."

"Aman, please book tickets for me, I will go to Darjeeling immediately."

"I will not let you go alone Aakash sir, I will go with you to ensure ASR is save." Aman retorted.

Aakash patted his back and smiled. Then in an attempt to lighten the tense atmosphere he turned to Anjali and said , "Di we are going to get your Chhotey back. Now please flash your millon dollar smile!"

Anjali sniffled and smiled through her tears at Aakash and then turned her face slowly towards Aman, the man she had come to trust with all her heart.

"Sir, ASR Sir what an honour to have you here, your PA just informed me..." The chief organiser of the hang gliding competition gushed, rubbing his hands nervously to see India's well known young tycoon standing in front of him in person!

He shook Arnavs hand vigorously with a huge smile on his face. " This event will become even more special with a renowned personality like you taking part in the competition."

"But I am nothing without the great Ms. Khushi Kumari Gupta! She is definitely more famous than I am, isn't she?" Arnav questioned the chief organiser with a serious face.

The man blinked his eyes rapidly at Khushi wondering who she was! She was really pretty! Must be some supermodel or a Bollywood actress!

Arnav read the man's confusion and winked at Khushi who couldn't prevent herself from giggling.

Arnav smiled at her and sighed. He was really happy to see her laughing again.

"Anyway introductions can come later, Mister. Is my glider ready?" he asked the man thus putting him out of his misery.

"Yes Sir, of course sir, please come this way sir..." the man fell over himself to please the mighty ASR!

He led them to the hangar and pointed at a shining red glider. "Here it is sir" he said with a satisfied grin.

"That's fine but I would like to make my own choice regarding which glider I would like to use. Is that okay by you?" Arnav said in a quiet voice.

Khushi detected a heaviness in his voice and looked up to see he was staring at her directly.

"I don't want any accidents when she is with me..."he said in a strangled voice.

Khushi understood that he was referring to the hot air balloon accident where his balloon had been tampered with. She was glad he was taking measures to prevent the same mistake again. The bad feeling she was having about this competition seemed to dissipate and Khushi let out a deep breath as Arnav inspected the other gliders and equipments. If today's practice session went off well, maybe they might win a trophy in the competition tomorrow and she could convince Arnav to dedicate it to poor NK lying on the hospital bed!

That thought lifted her spirits and she looked up at the sky. She was surprised to see no glider up there...Hey Devi Maiyya this is strange. I must talk to Arnav...

"Are you looking for your mother who has become a star?" he slid up behind her and asked in a gentle voice

Khushi turned at him in astonishment..."You remember...?"

"Yes of course... I do...in facts those words of yours are embedded in my soul...after maa..." he swallowed the lump in his throat and continued in a strained voice... "after maa was gone... that is where I found her among the stars..."

"But its light now, where are the stars?" Khushi asked him.

"They are always there Khushi...hidden from our eyes but always there..." he said in a hoarse whisper.

"Do you remember the first time I met you after our childhood days?" he sighed.

"Yes of course, you saved me..." Khushi placed her head on his shoulders and trembled slightly recollecting with fear how her parachute got entangled in the chord and he had disentangled it in midair and saved her from crashing to the ground.

Arnav squeezed her shoulder and nuzzled his chin on her soft hair..."No maa did! I was floating around in the air feeling her touch on me..."

"Meaning?" Khushi looked at him quizzically.

Arnav raised his eyes heavenwards "When I feel very low that is where I go...up to her...my beloved maa...and that is where she gave you to me...that is where I met you after so many years..."

"And that is where I want to go with you again..." he said bending his head, his eyes penetrating her soul..."To seek her blessings..."

"Are you ready?" he whispered against her lips.

"Yes Arnav...I am ready" a joyous tear slid down Khushi's eyes and bejwelled her rosy cheek.

Arnav pulled her in his arms and kissed the tear away. And then abruptly dropped a kiss on her full red lips.

"Come on!" he said excitedly, dragging her towards the glider...
