Is the cult of the romantic film over?

Romance used to be a big deal in Bollywood. Every second film was of that genre. Even when i was growing up in the 2000's, there were so many romantic fims. Even bad ones like Mohabbatein were blockbusters.
But now, very few movies of that genre are working. Last 2 weeks debacle of Hero and Katti Batti are just tip of iceberg.
Look at top hits this year - not a single film is romantic - except Tanu Weds Mnau Returns and that too is more of a drama!
Bajrangi bhaijan, ABCD 2, TWMR, Piku, Badlapur - not a single of them belongs to pure romantic genre.

Is the genre truy dead? If so, why?

Depends on the story and director! Katti Batti and Hero both director is same flopmaster Nikhil Advani, who had a string of flops, still getting job to direct...😕
Hero also had a really bad lead pair who cannot act...😆 also bad script, bad copy of original Hero.

Romantic movies shd be handled differently, with more finesse, its not everyone's expertise.
Now Imtiaz Ali might do a good job with Tamasha, lets wait and see...he did great with JWM, didnt he?

People dont like to watch just only romance anymore, there shd be some action, some drama, some comedy alongwith romance, then only it will work.

It depends, Ashiqui 2 with good music and good looking leads worked.

Even I was thinking that I haven't enjoyed a pure romantic film in a long time. I don't think the genre is dead though. There will always be enough adolescents and young people to keep the genre going. And once in a while there will be a romantic film that will captivate even those who are not regular fans of the genre. But it will need to be more nuanced, more suited to the times.

Na man... Bollywood earns mostly on romantic movies and masala flicks... Aashiqui2, Yeh Jawani Hai Deewani, Ram-Leela, Ranjhaanaa, 2 States, etc were all romantic films which have all released quite recently/not too long back.
2015 in general wasn't a huge movie year in my opinion. There were way more mediocre and bad films in comparison to good ones. Even the ones you have mentioned all have love angles in them somewhere. Hero and Katti Batti were just horribly written films...
