~ A Magnet for Trouble ~
The chit had a knack for attracting trouble. From the first moment I had set eyes on her, I couldn't remember one instance when she hadn't been embroiled in some accident. Right from tripping in the library to the near collision of our cars, the tumble in the lake, the near-fall at the mandir, the collapse of the overhead statue at the engagement, the bomb at the wedding and now this - an attempt at assault. If I didn't know better, I would think she enjoyed getting into trouble when I was around. However, what happened today was no joke. I winced inwardly at the thought of what a few moments' delay would have resulted in had I not reached her on time. But seeing that she wasn't ready to succumb without a fight gave me some satisfaction. She may not be a blueblood, but the chit had spunk. However, it was her adoring expression and her words that annoyed me the most.
"Mujhe vishwas tha, aap zaroor aayenge."
I didn't want her to think of me any more than I thought of her. So it was best that I nip any growing affection in the bud. Thus, I had given her some gobbledygook about protecting my esteem and standing in society by protecting her.
But amidst all that ensued, what struck me the most was the fact that she didn't hesitate from taking the flak for her actions. While any of the princesses I knew wouldn't have hesitated to spin a tale that exonerated them of their faults, Gayatri had vocally confessed her errors and had bravely faced the censure of all, including me, but specifically of Badi Rani Maa. I had seen the bravest of women cower under the censorious gaze and critical tone of Badi Rani Maa. But not Gayatri. She stood regally, her poise and demeanour putting every blueblood to shame, and accepted the obloquy with silence. Badi Rani Maa's acerbic words aimed to deride and I could see they had hit the mark, the glistening in her eyes was proof enough. But to my amazement, not a single tear was spilled, neither a word uttered. With eyes graciously downcast, she braved it all - from Badi Rani Maa's caustic remarks to Kunwar Chacha and Rani Chachi's smirks. With her unflinching determination and dignified bearing, to everyone present she was giving a message, one that was loud and clear.
Rani Gayatri Devi was out to prove her mettle and nothing and no one could stop her.
