Hello dear 😊
Interesting post and good analysis!
Well, personally, I don't even like romances 😆 It's not often that a couple catches my attention - mostly, I like the characters individually. When Swaragini started, I liked the pacing of the story and Swara's character was promising, though I stopped watching regularly in-between, I think around the time of SwarYa? Though, Sanskar had me hooked- he is a multi-layered character with his flaws and edges which I just love. That's the main problem I have with how Swara's character has shaped up (and many other female leads in Indian shows do): Showing her mahaanta, they are actually trying to make her perfect. Someone who forgives and forgets and thinks about everyone else before herself - but this forced perfectness is a flaw which is hard to digest.
Though, Swara is not as worse off as many other female leads - but she is coming very close. Combine this with Ragini's negativity winning all the time and the unbelieveable stupidity of the Maheshwari family, I couldn't take it, anymore. Firday's episode and today's were the first episodes I watched after quite some time - and only for Varun's outstanding performance. Today, especially, I just re-discovered why I adore Sankar so much!
I do love SwaSan, their chemistry is amazing (although, more than their romance, I enjoy their bonding on human and emotional level), but they are not my sole reason to watch this show. Sanskar is, right now, actually. But will he be able to keep me hooked till the end? I don't know. It all depends on how they are going to develope the storyline further; what other tracks they have in store and how they are going to wrap up the current plotline. I really wish that after exposing Ragini, Swara would just realize that Shekhar is not worth it and that she has come this far in life without him already, she doesn't need him, support her mother in separating from this spineless man, bid the Maheshwaris Goodbye for good and take Sanskar with her as the guy deserves a lot better than this family. Hah, dreams.
I'd like to add (well, you did mention it, in a way) another point which bothers me in Indian shows: The excessive focus on females. Women empowerment is nice and all but I can't see it to such an extent, anymore. The female lead is almost always right, she discovers all the secrets and hidden agendas, men are decorations with the main purpose to look good etc... I think in their passion of making women equal to men, many shows went far ahead creating unequality in the sense of portraying the men 'lower' (intellectually, capably) than females. And then, making the female lead perfect and mahaan - which makes viewers like me dislike her. Mary Sues, they are called in the world of books.
On another note, if we look at the Bestseller lists (as an example) and compare them with trp ratings of shows, people do seem to love certain things repeated again and again, especially romance (love triangles, e.g.)- well, mainstream, huh. I've never liked much what is on those lists, mostly the same, boring content recycled with another setting, some things added and still... And romance is just in, nowadays. Such things are not only a problem in Indian shows, it seems.
Will it change in the upcoming year? Somehow, I doubt it 😛
