I always thought since DP was too obvious as killer of kavitha and wanting to make story interesting that it was Adarsh.
As we know not only AP but DP also was very loving of Sanskaar and it was once told by Adarsh himself (I think ...but I might be remembering wrong) that papa did not listen to Sanskaar so why will he listen now.

What I do think is Adarsh was jealous of Sanskaar...a story of one sided sibling rivalry.So he made a plan so that he can get Sanskaar out of the house and then by killing Kavitha (he might have not wanted to kill Kavitha but unexpectedly she was killed) and making it appear as DP who did it permanently sour relationships of DP and sanskaar.

But your story idea is also interesting.
