I will not recommend Poonam to go all out only for classical singing as a career option.

1) She is around 26 and classical singing needs years of training and to establish oneself as a classical singer of mark it is not easy, just as hard as trying to become a playback singer.

2) She has an innate talent suitable for playback singing, classical training for her is recommended only to harness her natural talent to enhance her playback singing capability that too she will really need a proper teacher, otherwise in the process of getting corrected she might become a learner and lose whatever innateness she has right now.

3) She is more closer to playback type of singing than classical singing. People without proper former classical training has become successful playback singers. Those who have already developed singing faults without proper training are the difficult ones to train in classical, lots of time will be spent on correcting developed faults whereas a novice is an easier one to train.

Yes, I agree that it will take her 10 years to make any breakthrough in film music.

However:

1) What is the payback of pursuing classical music? There are other better classical singers like Parthiv Gohil who are not pursuing that option and prefer to struggle for a few alaaps here and there in film music. Why is that the case? How much money is spent taking lessons before she can generate enough funds to put food on the table and educate her daughter?

2) What is the demand for classical albums/concerts? Will a recording company produce an album/Will a sponsor organize a classical concert by a relative unknown?

Poonam should do what her heart tells her to do. You can only really succeed if you really want something and searching for what you really want can take some time and then chances of succeeding substantially improve.

In career counseling we ask our students to first find their passion and not get into a career track because it is the *in* thing or just for good money. It needs lot of patience to find a career within your passion but boy when you can do that the results are outstanding. I can say this honestly as I have seen numerous examples.

Poonam, if a guru like Panditji thinks that you are destined to be a classical singer, follow it but not because he thinks you can, but because you belive that too. In India we always say guru is right, but that is when the guru knows you for some time; what panditji has sensed is the immense potential, is that the passion only poonam can tell.

Thanks and take care..
