Not his height, or physique or his after-shave lotion... a recent study done by researchers in a British natural history museum showed that the 'distance between the lip and brow of a man's face determines his attractiveness'. Conducted by a paleontologist, it also indicated that 'men who have short faces between the brow and upper lip, which exaggerate the size of their jaw, cheekbones and the eyebrows, look very attractive'.
The researcher studied several male and female skulls, after which the museum staff applied the calculation to photographs of celebrities and declared that Australian pop singer Peter Andre and rapper-actor Will Smith, are the most attractive in the random list of stars they had drawn up. Their conclusion -- shorter, broader faces attract women the most. Justin Timberlake, Thierry Henry, Brad Pitt, David Beckham, Johnny Depp and Kanye West top the list of attractive men.
Does the theory work all the time? A random survey among women in the country showed that they had mixed opinions about it. Some felt it would take more than a face shape to fall in love with a man. Others agreed that men with sharp cheekbones and a chiselled jaw line are always more attractive. A strong nose, large eyebrows, firm jaw, sculpted mouth were also listed as important male features, but the theory of the 'lip to brow' ratio, mentioned in the study could not be applied everywhere.
"Arjun Rampal has symmetrical features that make him very attractive," says Bangalore-based consultant psychiatrist, Shyamala Vatsa. "Studies say that facial resemblance is a cue to kinship, so resemblance may have a negative effect on sexual attraction. The three most important factors that decide attractiveness are symmetry, sexual dimorphism (neither strongly male nor strongly female) and average (boy-next-door) looks. People like Will Smith and Brad Pitt have very familiar faces and therefore attractive to most women."
Explains Dr Vikram Prabhu, consultant psychiatrist, Sagar Apollo Hospital, Bangalore, "The morphological features like the shape of the head, nose and cheek bones can make a man look attractive, but it is also important to bring in the emotional link, because women are attracted to a man's facial expressions too."
Dr Prabhu quotes the instance of two Bollywood heroes of the 70s --Amitabh Bachchan and Rajesh Khanna -- both very attractive to women. "Amitabh had a long nose, broad forehead and prominent cheek bones, all of which gave him a tough look," he says. "Whereas Rajesh Khanna, in comparison, had a much softer look which women also found attractive.
Young heroes like Hrithik Roshan have a prominent maxilla, which conveys health and energy, while Shah Rukh Khan's toned new look has made his facial features sharp and attractive. Aamir Khan's face square-shaped. He is considered very handsome. Also, it must be is more remembered that there are different tastes among women -- some like the macho look, while others prefer softer, non-threatening looks."
Varuni Mohan, stylist, believes that men with angular faces are much more attractive to women. "Among Bollywood heroes, I think, men like John Abraham, Akshay Kumar and Milind Soman fall in this category," she says. "Milind also has a long face with a strong jaw which makes him look so hot. Saif Ali Khan has a pointed chin, sharp features and a softer face. Women who look for someone gentler could be attracted to this kind of looks."
Dr Sujendra Prakash, behavioural scientist, adds, "These kinds of studies must also be taken in a cultural context. Attraction is not always due to the physical features of a person; it is triggered by so much more. Take Amitabh Bachchan, for instance -- his face and voice were rejected once! Today, he is a legend.
