Chapter 3: Doctor Madam Sambhalegi

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Ragini slowly backed away from Nachiket, in awe of what he had just done. She turned her back on him and stormed away, irritated as ever.

Nachiket was shocked; he thought he had finally found a way to appease her, but she had just flat out rejected it. All his previous girlfriends had never been angry with him for this long and even if they were angry, they would just melt looking at his handsome face. And he had just put on a whole dance number in the middle of a park for her! Yeh ladki kahan se tapki?!

As she walked away from him, hundreds of thoughts were running through Ragini's head at the speed of light, creating a murky cloud of confusion in her mind.

How could you enjoy his cheap flirting?

How could I not! His tall, muscular stature and his perfectly shaped face...

He's just going to dump you when he meets another pretty girl!

Nachiket wouldn't do that to me--I felt the love in his arms when he held me close...

You'll be stuck crying for him for the rest of your life

I heard his heart beating my name! Ragini! Ragini!

"Ragini!" Nachiket yelled, following her. Ragini couldn't even hear him over the conflict in her mind. "Ragini, please mujhe ek moka toh do!" he cried, running to keep up with her rapid pace. "Ragini, yaar, main aur kya karoon ki tum maan jaoge? Please, kuch toh bo--OOOHHH!"

The scream cut her thoughts short. Ragini turned, her eyes wide in horror. "NAACHIKKEET!" she yelled, running towards the fallen figure. This is all my fault--what have I done!

A crowd of people had formed around him and Ragini struggled to push her way through. "Aap zara hatiye...please mujhe jaane dijiye...I'm a doctor, please MOVE!" She had somehow grown accustomed to lying about her background in moments of crisis, calling herself a doctor instead of a nurse. Ragini fought her way through the crowd and kneeled by Nachiket, who had a deep gash through his leg and was bleeding profusely. Ragini was absolutely horrified and she didn't even realize when tears began streaming from her eyes. "Yeh kaise ho gaya Nachiket!"

"Woh, I tripped and there was a piece of glass," Nachiket said, motioning to his side where there sat a shard stained crimson with his blood. "Tum chodo na, kuch nai hua mujhe, I'm fine!" Nachiket cried, trying to get up. "Uufff!" he yelled, as he fell back down, his injured leg unable to hold his weight.

"Nachiket!" cried Ragini, sternly. "Chup chap baitho yahan aur mujhe dekhne do! I'm a doctor, remember?!"

"Yes, of course I remember!" Nachiket retorted. "And issi liye I'm scared! Mujhe doctors se daar lagta hai," he yelled, grabbing the hand she was reaching out to his leg.

"WHAT?! Khud doctor ho ke doctor se daar lagta hai?!" Ragini said, looking up at him with confusion. "I promise, mein tumhe kuch nahi hone doongi," she added, the surprise in her sweet brown eyes melting away into a comforting look that seemed to hug Nachiket's heart and promise to never let it go.

Nachiket reached up and brushed a hair from her face, stroking her soft cheek. "Yehi toh main suna chahta tha, Ragini darling." Ragini took a deep breath, partially to control her rapid heart rate and partially to show him that she wasn't going to fall in his trap (well, who was she kidding? She had lost her heart that very first day...).

"Sambhal ke Ragini!" he yelled, his body jerking away from her in pain as she raised his pant leg to look at his wound.

"Sorry! Sorry..." she mumbled, looking around for some sort of medication for his leg. She needed to stop the bleeding as soon as possible, otherwise the loss of blood would cause him to faint on the spot. Ragini's eye fell on something and she got up, running towards some bushes. As she ran, Ragini wiped her eyes dry, taking advantage of the fact that she was facing away from Nachiket and everyone else. Why am I crying? I never cried for any other patient! Ragini forcibly pushed the thoughts out of her head and focused on the situation at hand. She picked a few leaves from the bush while taking deep breaths to steady her pulse and came rushing back, the crowd letting her pass without question this time. Ragini sat down next to Nachiket and began crushing the leaves in her hands, breaking them into smaller pieces.

"Yeh kya kar rahi ho, RaaaHH!" Nachiket yelled in pain as Ragini dumped the crushed leaves into his wound. Ragini looked around at the faces staring down at them. "Aap mein se kisi ke pas koi bada rumal ya kuch cloth hai?"

"Bhabhiji, aap apna dupatta istemal kijiye na," cried a young man from the crowd. "Bilkul filmon ki tarah!" he added, eliciting some laughter from the crowd. Ragini looked at him and rolled her eyes disgustedly. She paused for a moment, gathering the end of her dupatta in her hand as if sincerely considering the option. Then, realizing that she had no other choice, she tore it into two pieces. Uff, iss Nachiket ne toh meri puri zindagi hi film bana di hai, she thought, irritated, both by Nachiket's behavior and the looks she was getting from the crowd. She used one section of her dupatta to wrap Nachiket's leg, ensuring that the plant remained inside his wound.

As Ragini was wrapping his leg, Nachiket said, "Picture khatam ho gaya hai. Ab, please, aap sab jaaye." No one made a move. "End credits bhi dekhna hai aap ko?" he added sarcastically, raising his hand to show them the way to leave. The crowd dissipated slowly, grumbling about his rudeness.

"So would you care to tell me what you just threw into my leg?!" asked Nachiket, as Ragini finished securing her dupatta to his leg. "Yarrow," she said, leaning back with a feeling of accomplishment that the bleeding was decreasing. You're a good doctor in times of crisis, Ragini, she thought to herself. "Yarrow?" asked Nachiket, "so that helps?!"

Ragini rolled her eyes at him. "Agar medical school mein thoda dhyan dete, toh tumhe bhi pata hoga ki yarrow has antibacterial properties. Par some people are too busy flirting with every pretty face," she said, looking away. She was flattered by the attention he had been giving her, but saddened to know that she wasn't the sole recipient of this affection. Nachiket smiled at her irritation; he could tell from her eyes that he was slowly succeeding in wooing this girl.

"Tab maine class me dhyan nahi diya, iss liye aaj itni hot ladki mujhe dhyan de rahi hai!" he said, winking at her. Ragini's stomach sprouted tens of butterflies, but she tried hard to look unfazed. "Hmmm...tab bhi medicine ko chod ke ishq lada rahe the, aaj bhi apne pair ko nazar andaz kar ke ishq lada rahe ho. Tumse aur kya umeed kar sakte hai," Ragini said, getting up. "Flirt kahin ka!"

Nachiket caught her wrist as she was standing up. "Tab flirt kar raha tha. Aaj ishq kar raha hoon. Farq hai." he said, dead serious. "Ishq?" Ragini questioned, amused. "Yeh ishq hai?!"

"Haan! Ishq hi toh hai jiski wajah se main din raat, sote jagte, subah shaam, har waqt bas tumhari yaad mein dooba rehta hoon." Nachiket said teasingly. He knew she wouldn't believe him, but it was true. He hadn't been able to get her beautiful face out of his mind, her eyes teasing him to sleep at night and the dreams of her caressing his face waking him up in the morning.

"Pyaar karte ho toh sabit karo!" cried Ragini. She knew what it felt like to not be able to get someone's thoughts out of your head. But, reconciling with her inner devil, she wanted to be sure that he felt the same way before committing to him. Her heart was swooning with the prospect of him doing something else, just for her.

"Aacha?" Nachiket asked, raising an eyebrow at her. "Abhi sabit kar deta hoon, madam!" he said. Ragini's eyes widened. What is he going to do? Apne hi pair par kuladi toh nai mar rahi hoon main?

Nachiket threw his head back and closed his eyes. "RAAGGINNIII!!!" he yelled, at the top of his lungs. The entire park froze and looked at them, eyes glued to the incredible romance they were witnessing. Ragini immediately bent down and leaned in towards Nachiket, covering his mouth with her hand. "Stop it Nachiket! Kya kar rahe ho tum?!" she said. The words came out angrily, but he could see in her eyes that she loved his declaration. The park goers exchanged looks, some naughty, some amazed, and some just plain confused.

Nachiket wrapped his arm around her waist and pulled her closer to him, so that their noses were all but touching. She could feel his warm breath on her face, sending shivers down her spine. "I love you," he whispered into her lips, enjoying the blush that had crept onto her cheeks. Ragini closed her eyes; Nachiket was ready to finally bring his lips into hers and begin their journey of love.

When she pulled back. It took all of Ragini's self-control not to tackle him to the ground and madly kiss his face, but she didn't want to give him that satisfaction. Not yet, of course.

Ragini stood up again, pouting. Nachiket couldn't believe how stubborn she was in playing hard to get! She turned to walk away, when he called out her name.

"Ragini, main yaha uth nahi sakta. Kam se kam uthake bench pe betha do na!"

Ragini stopped dead in her tracks. How could you be so stupid?! she cursed herself, silently. Ragini bent down and helped Nachiket up, wrapping his arm around her shoulders and placing her hand on his back to steady him. "Mujhe pata tha Ragini, tum mere pyaar ko kabhi nahi jhutlapaogi," Nachiket said, smiling. He felt her sway to the side under his weight and he immediately felt guilty for leaning his heavy body on her petite frame. "Stop." she said, waving an angry finger under his nose. "Ab main jo kar rahi hoon, insaniyat ke nate kar rahi hoon. Phir se mujhe pe line maarne ki koshish kiya na, toh insaniyat bhi bhool jaungi!" Ragini warned him, secretly wishing that he did cross his limits today.

Nachiket just wanted to bury his nose in her hair and leave a trail of kisses down her neck. But the pain that was searing through his leg told him that he needed to rest first. There would come a time for flirting with this gorgeous girl, but right now, he was simply grateful to her for taking care of him. He hoped dearly that she would continue to take care of him like this for the rest of his life.
