Akshay Kumar starrer Singh Is Bling earns wrath of Akal Takht

Akal Takht has also asked the Punjab government to keep an eye on the social media which is showing the film trailer.

After the Nanak Shah Fakir now Akshay Kumar starer Singh Is Bling has created a controversy. The film is slated for an October 2 release, its trailer launched was on August 19 has irked the Sikh community with its controversial dialogue which mentions chicken, whisky, Kabaddi, bhangra and the Golden Temple as the five major attractions in Punjab.

The trailer begins with a dialogue 'Punjab me sabse mashhur five' (Punjab is famous for five things) and shows Golden Temple, bhangra, Kabaddi, whisky and chicken.

The highest Sikh temporal authority, Shri Akal Takht has criticised the film producer and director for equating whisky and chicken with the Golden Temple and has asked them to remove the controversial dialogue before the film is released.

"The producer and director of the film has made a big mistake by equating the Harmandir Sahib (Golden Temple) with chicken and whisky. We have also received a number of complaints about the posters of the film. They have misused Kada (iron bangle) in the film which is an important Sikh religious symbol," Akal Takht chief Gyani Gurbachan Singh said.

The Akal Takht chief said that the producer and director of the film should have contacted the Sikh Temporal authorities before finalising the script of the film. He said that nobody will be allowed to insult the Sikh religion in the name of entertainment. Though, he ruled out a ban on the screening of the film.

"The films dialogues, misrepresentation of Sikh religious places and religious symbols tantamount to sacrilege of Sikh religion. The matter will be discussed in the meeting of the five priests (Singh Sahiban). Direction will also be issued to the SGPC to take legal action against the film producer-director for insulting Sikh religion," Gyani Gurbachan Singh said.

He also said that the film shows Sikhs in a very poor light and using Sikh religion hymns with semi-clad women.

Akal Takht has also asked the Punjab government to keep an eye on the social media which is showing the film trailer.

Singh Is Bling is a Bollywood action comedy film directed by Prabhudheva and produced by Grazing Goat Pictures. The film features Akshay Kumar, Amy Jackson, Lara Dutta and Kay Kay Menon in lead roles.

This is not the first time that a Bollywood film portraying Sikh characters has angered Sikhs. Earlier in April this year, the Punjab government had suspended the screening of another Bollywood film Nanak Shah Fakir following the resentment among the Sikh community which had objected to the portrayal of Guru Nanak in living form.

Sunny Deol starer 'Singh Saab The Great' released in September 2013 had also been slammed by the Akal Takht which had objected to the use of 'Singh Saab' in the title of the film. The word Singh Saab can only be used for Sikh priests.

Ajay Devgn starer Son of Sardar (2012) was also dragged into the court for portrayal of Sikhs in a negative role.

This protest is justified.

You cannot club Harmander Sahib with things like chicken, whisky etc.

The dialogue was cheap.

Bollywood has always stereotyped Sikhs and insulted /misrepresented their Gurudwaras, symbols (except rare 1 or 2 films).

This time it is no different.

I don't mind other stereotypes. But barking about Harmander Sahib so loosely is not done.

I agree with your sentiments but its rings hollow because I have seen some posts of yours where you've acknowledged that PK is your favourite film ever and Hirani the director that you trust most. 😊

I have never said PK is my favourite film.

I like OMG and I would love such a film on any religion. ONG tread the tightrope very well without insulting anyone IMO.

I do not like PK at all. And called it the weakest film of Hirani.

To elaborate further, things like kada etc are not a problem IMO.

I only agree with the lines on Harmander Sahib being problematic.

Otherwise rest of the issues seem small and I don't endorse any protests on it.

Films like OMG and PK are different as they take on subject of religion head on. They are supposed to question and critique. They don't masquerade as identity pride films the way films like Singh is King or Singh is Bling do.

That is what makes perception of their content different.

I would welcome a film like OMG based on Sikh character and question contradiction, highlight how religion is twisted to make a business in form of deras etc.

But not fake Sikh hero films like Singh is Bling or King. They are just being dishonest and have no idea of Sikhs or Punjab per se.

I hope I have made my stance clear.

Religious outfits have nothing better to do. Over-analyzing movie dialogues and outraging. Bunch of old men who take offense in public and enjoy C grade stuff in private.

To be honest I do not even endorse making such identity focused films.

I mean it is ridiculous!

Singh is king, Hindu is King or Mega Muslim! Doesn't it sound outrageous?

Why do we even need such titles?

Why not have a normal film and put hero of any background in it?

One can have a turbaned Sikh character as hero without having such titles on Sardar, Singh etc!

I don't like communal emphasis.
