Even though we are no closer to discovering the actual cause for the divorce, there were some interesting clues that were dropped today, especially from Meher's perspective. Abeer felt that Meher cared only about money and not about their marriage, and Meher felt that Abeer was refusing to snap out of his land of dreams, unwilling to face some very real, hard-hitting truth in their lives. It's very easy to see both of their perspectives regarding the issue that came up here: there was clearly something which required more financial resources than they had at the time. While it seems Abeer was quite happy to live in denial of the problem, Meher was eager to find a way to solve it, that is, get the money necessary. Only mystery left to be solved is what that problem was.
What I find interesting here, and where my titular suspicions come in, is that Abeer's accusations about Meher echo his father's sentiments about her: that she was a gold-digger who took advantage of Abeer's naivety. In keeping with the theme of one's own heart being the greatest enemy, I don't think Kuber was an outright villain who deliberately split Abeer and Meher up. But it seems like he never trusted her and always assumed that she saw their family as a stepping-stone to money and professional progress.
My gut feeling is that a badly-timed course of events made his father's suspicions to seem well-founded to Abeer, causing him to accuse Meher of gold-digging and not really loving him. I think the fact that he trusted his father over her at that time was what broke Meher, and after that she was too broken/proud/angry - we'll need to know more to figure out exactly which - to want to give the relationship another chance at that moment. Also, it could be that Abeer didn't retract his accusation but was willing to overlook what he thought was her mistake, and for Meher that was unacceptable.
I think this is where the 2.5 crores, Meher's secret and the cause for divorce all converge. My guess is that Meher, to solve whatever real-world problem this was, either asked Kuber or some third-party dude (which opens up the possibility for accusations of adultery) for money out of desperation but didn't tell them what it was for and maybe didn't tell Abeer either. Probably Kuber and Abeer were estranged at the time and this gave Kuber a chance to say' "I told you so" to his son, but without knowing all the facts. As we know, Abeer acts like a maniac when his ego is hurt and he too probably didn't understand, or didn't want to understand, the truth of the situation, so he accused Meher... of something which was unacceptable to her. Then Meher might have been all "where there is no trust, what is the point?" OR she might have felt like, "well, if I have to hear accusations, why not do the thing I am accused for?" and taken the money.
Either way, it's clear that they really needed that money for something, some majboori as Meher said. And it was probably that same something that the 2.5 crores were used for, and that same thing is probably Meher's big secret...
