Both. They have to fetch numbers and pack in a performance with a punch and even further be a likeable personality offscreen/have that audience connect because at the moment no one can really rely on star power beside the established actors. Sometimes it isn't possible to get all of that - like say Ranbir of Rocket Singh - his performance was appreciated by so many but the numbers were dismal but still it was a step in the right direction because it impressed people. The worst kind of thing to happen to the younger gen is when the movie doesn't do well commercially/hype-wise and critically eg. Kill Dill, Tevar because nothing will be the saving grace. Basically to me they need a bit of both - commercial and critical - or at least one really strongly where the actor is the person who shone the most in the film.

obviously both ...even a failed actor can be appreciated by most but that doesnt guarantee him success and survival in the long run ... BO number give an inclination of the majority kinda
