Chapter 22

I was walking for about ten minutes in the darkness, when a car pulled up next to me. It was Randhir. He rolled down the window and looked at me.

"Get in," he said.

"No," I refused, my eyes filling with tears again as soon as I saw him.

"I can't let you go home this late, and on top of that you're walking," Randhir explained, "Just get in."

"I don't have a disease Randhir, I'm perfectly fine," I told him, my heart hurting. "Please leave me alone."

"Sanyukta it isn't a request, it's an order. Get in," Randhir demanded.

I breathed sharply and then opened the door to the passenger side before getting in and slamming the door shut.

"Take me home," I demanded.

"I am taking you home," he responded and started to drive.

We were silent in the car - the both of us... when I finally spoke.

"Who was the girl?" I asked him. "Ragini?"

"What? No... Ragini's married," Randhir said.

"So were you," I murmured sourly.

Randhir looked away from me.

"I don't even know her last name... some Ishika," he said. "As soon as I woke up, I got out of there."

"Should I applaud?" I asked him sarcastically.

"Sanyukta..." Randhir murmured. "You're the one asking questions."

I wiped my eyes with my hand as Randhir pulled into my driveway.

"Thanks," I murmured.

"It isn't a problem," he said.

I was about to open the door and get out when I paused.

"I said to take me home Randhir," I said to him, feeling myself get emotional, my wet eyes looking up into his. "Where have you taken me?"

"Home?" Randhir asked.

"Our home," I clarified.

Without asking anything else, Randhir backed out of the driveway and drove home. I didn't want to stay with my parent's anymore... while it was true that the thought of being with Randhir was painful, the thought of being with my parent's after all of this was even more painful. I couldn't take advantage of their kindness.

If me and Randhir were having problems, we had to sort it out ourselves, and we couldn't be a burden on anyone else.

I got out of the car and felt content after so many months - I truly felt like I was going home after so long. I followed Randhir upstairs into our apartment. He unlocked the door and I stepped inside.

He didn't say anything to me - he just took off his shoes and headed into the bedroom. I removed my flats and followed him into our room.

I looked around - it was just as I had left it. Everything was the same. In fact, it might even be more clean than I last remembered it. Randhir was never this clean.

"You keep it clean," I stated.

"Yeah... I always wanted it to be kept nice, in case... in case..." he started, and I heard his voice crack.

"In case I came back?" I asked him, my eyes filling up with tears.

He nodded.

"Yeah," he whispered, and I knew he was trying his hardest to not cry.

I felt my lips tremble as I walked upto him and wrapped my hand around his arm, leaning my head on his shoulder from the side.

Then I broke down. I couldn't help it. I started to sob uncontrollably... my heart hurt. He was my only source of comfort.

"Sorry Sanyukta," Randhir said, his voice hoarse. "I'm so sorry Sanyukta."

I looked up at him and saw tears stream down his cheeks too, and I couldn't hold it back anymore. I hugged him tightly. I wished I had dreamed the last month and a half... but I knew I hadn't.

"I'm sorry," Randhir murmured, as he held me against him. "I'm so sorry."

"I still need time," I whispered against his chest. "But... but I won't leave you."

I couldn't leave him. It was not for my sake or for my baby's sake. It was for his sake.

I always thought that I would die if I left him, but the truth was that me leaving him, would hurt him more than it would ever hurt me. He told me I needed to be strong, but he wouldn't be able to live without me. I couldn't kill him... I didn't have the power to murder my Randhir.
