Fourty Four

Randhir rubbed her arm as she leaned closer to him. He kissed the top of her head and took a deep breath.

"I don't want to go either Sanyukta," he murmured. "But... I don't know if it's right for me to stay."

"Then go," she whispered in response, her voice filled with pain. "I know I'm asking you to stay, but I shouldn't... I can't stop you."

He held her more tightly and kissed the top of her head once again, trying to imagine what life would be like once he walked out of Sanyukta's front door for good. His heart sunk as soon as he imagined a life without her.

"I have to accept this decision of yours," she whispered. "If I love you, I can't bind you to me."

He brought his hand up to her chin. She looked up at him and he leaned down to kiss her softly on the lips.

"I love you so much," she told him, and tears fell from her eyes.

Randhir kissed her tears and then held her tight.

"I know you do," he replied. "You love me too much."

She buried her face in his chest, inhaling his scent.

"Sanyukta," Randhir said, stroking her hair. "Can I ask you something?"

"Mhmmm," she said against his chest.

"Was our baby a girl or a boy?" he asked her softly, and he heard her breath catch in her throat.

Sanyukta lifted her face from his chest and lay down on the pillow next to him.

"Boy," she murmured.

"A boy?" Randhir responded, feeling an ache in his chest. "How did you cope?"

"It was hard Randhir," Sanyukta told him as tears spilled from her eyes. "It was so hard to cope with losing him."

Randhir turned around and wrapped his arm around her body as she leaned in closer to him. He kissed her forehead again and she squeezed her eyes shut.

"Now I have to cope with losing you too," she added. "But then again... I guess I never had you."

You have me, he wanted to say, but he kept his mouth shut. He didn't want to inflict any more pain on her already wet wounds.

"Sanyukta, is Kaustuki married?" he asked her.

"No," she said. "Her and Jiggy are together, but not married."

"Then why did you tell me she was married?" he asked her.

"I didn't want you to look for Kaustuki Sherpa... I thought if I claimed she was married, you wouldn't search for her and find out about me," she admitted. "I'm sorry."

"It's okay," he murmured in response.

She leaned into him again and he caressed her arm lovingly.

"You can go Randhir," she murmured. "But I think you'll come back to me anyways."

"Maybe," he muttered in response.

I hope that happens, he thought to himself, as his eyes closed and Sanyukta fell asleep too on his chest.
