I'll just put my two cents in. Given that the U.S. generally thinks 50 to 100 years ahead of its time and all its actions (adventures and misadventures) are prompted with that end in mind, I wouldn't be surprised if it was really for the oil or shaping the strategic and economic environment of the region fifty years hence. More so, prudence dictates, strike while the iron is hot.Leaders can get away with mass murder if the public sentiment is a bit tilted in your favor (I think it was, I don't have the numbers though). Don't get me wrong here. I have no sympathy for Saddam and the likes. I think he could have challenged the throne of Lucifer himself. But I am not quite sure Bush was *just* caught offguard on the WMD part. As far as a U.S. citizen is, or should be, concerned, Bush better be ready with some pretty convincing justification to send U.S. foot soldiers in the killing fields. This equally applies to the parties in "The Coalition of the Willing" (what a funny name!) agreeing to send their troops in Iraq as well. Having said that, and assuming that Bush realizes he bit off more than he could chew, I can quite understand he feels hesitant to pull out U.S. troops even though he might be the happiest washing his hands off Iraq. He is kind of trapped in the hell he has managed to open the door into, which I don't think he was naive not to see, but, more likely, chose to overlook. Now if he pulls out, Iraq as the breeding ground of all terrorist activities will make the role of Pak and Afghanistan look like child's play.
