The rivalry began in the late 80s.

Sridevi was the undisputed No.1.

Madhuri was a rising star with great momentum. She had at least 1 big hit and several hit songs per year from 1987-1997.

Sridevi was an awkward child star turned heroine at the tender age of 13.

Madhuri who is 4 years younger, was an educated girl who got on with the media very well.

The journalists started pitting this likeable newcomer versus the current numero uno.

They signed a film together called "Zameen" in circa 1988.

There were several delays and tantrums thrown by Sri which halted the release.

According to Saroj Khan Sridevi was very insecure of Madhuri's rapid rise.

Sridevi is known for her intense insecurity and jealous nature. Just ask Jaya Prada.

Madhuri is one of a kind when it comes to other actresses, she has no hangups and is very secure.

Another thing that further ignited fire was the fact that when Sridevi was at her top, Filmfare Awards didn't take place for 1986 (Nagina) + 1987 (Mr. India) so she missed out marking her place in the history books... She ended up with 2 trophies vs Madhuri's 4 Best Actress wins. This upsets fans even till this day.
