Who was a bigger star in the 1990s- Madhuri or Sridevi?

I love Sridevi's work and find her to be the better actress between the two; however, from what I remember from the 1990s, Madhuri always had more fans somehow.

Only on IF have I seen more Sridevi fans, actually. I think people always considered Sridevi the better actress, but Madhuri always had more sex appeal and hence a larger fan following. Or perhaps, Sri was a bigger star in the 1980s and Madhuri took over in the 1990s?

I think Mads was more popular..which means she was the bigger star..
Tho Sridevi is far more the better actress

Sridevi became a superstar way before MD.

Sridevi is basically the 80s superstar. She was already on top when MD debuted.

Sridevi is a senior.

Regarding popularity, Sridevi was and is hugely popular with both Hindi and regional film audience. She is the only actress who ruled in 3 different industries. Even in mid 90s she was the only actress in top 10 in richest and most powerful personalities of Bollywood.

But MD's seemingly discussed more because the generation online, is mostly discussing on basis of entire 90s. Obviously ones growing up during the time when MD began scaling the peak would believe she was more popular.

Media coverage on both was even. Only now MD is more exposed whereas Sridevi had opted out of limelight till she decided to make a comeback with EV.

Both have reigned in different decades.

Mads...koi shaqq? sri was a powerhouse...untouchable..until mads arrived.

I think they were only head-to head rivals for abt 4-5 years. And they were both winners. No losers.

Sri was way established in South when she debuted in BW. She did some crap films with Jitendra and Mithun.. but always held her own. She overshadowed not only her female co-stars but also heros. Even in cameo in Jaanbazz, she overshadowed Dimple. In Mr India, she did that to Anil, In Sadma, she did that to kamal, only Kamal bounced back in climax. In Chalbaaz, she made sunny and rajini look sidekicks 😆 In chandni did she the same to Rishi and Vinod. 😆 Dare I say She even put BigB on 2nd place in Khuda gawah.. nobody rem. Nagarjuna was there too. 😆 Lamhe, nagina, Ladla, Gumarah... the list is long.. and its not abt BO hits.. its abt women empowerment. She wasnt called "Female Amitabh" for nothing.. She had this persona with unlimited acting abilities.. to just steal the show from every1. Not in a cunning way that aamir does in his films, just naturally. I think she did so many double roles with conviction, we dont who the real Sri is..😆 I think her last film worth my memory was Judai and then she got married and said bye bye to her.. long carrier since child.

Madhuri on the other hand was B or c grade heroine.. for majority of her films since she got "ek do teen" Tezaab. Her kissing scenes wud make today's heroines look like saints. She was never noticed for he acting skills. Even in Tezaab, it Anil K and ek do teen dance number. But then got good deals.. Dil, Saajan, Khalnayak, Beta etc.. where she proved her range. HAHK BO wise, gave her superstardom. She also tried Sangeet ala Sri's sadma but wasnt convincing as a blind dancer.

I can only think 3 BIG films where Madhuri was the show stealer.. Beta, HAHK, Sajan. Her last film worth rem. was Devdas. Ash and Karishama(DTPH) gave her huge competition.. even if let Srk's popularity and hamming aside.

Its just today's generations have seen much of Mads and not enough of Sri, they might go for Mads. Sri ruled both BW and South. All India supertstar if there was ever one. Yes, I love Madhuri's smile, but those big eyes of Sri can emote a lover, snake, power, intensity and eveything that women empowerment needs.. in a good way. 😊

I am from Bombay grew up in the 90s for me Madhuri was the bigger star popularity wise. Sridevi being so popular in the South was not very known to me at that time.

For me it was only Madhuri..

Sridevi was a superstar in 80s-90s.her only major drawback was her Hindi diction..Madhuri good actress no doubt but copied sridevi like anything in her earlier movies plus saroj khan gave same steps and expressions to both.They are both great dancers without doubt.
