Manik's POV
In Between The Fire
I looked over the huge fireflames to see my life, my Nandu, heavily breathing. Trying to gasp in air. I feel my heartbeat stop for a second. In between the fire, lay my soul, my pyaar, my Nandini Murthy.
"Nandini..!" I shout. But she doesn't reply. She stays there. I try to come over the fire the fire flames just rised. I finally, taking a deep breathe, jumped over the fire. It hurt. Who am I kidding? I got burnt. But my Nandini was in middle of the fire, and I, will jump thousands of times in that fire, where my Nandini is trapped.
"Manik.." She gasped as I pulled her up. I carried her in my arms and held her close to my chest. She clinged on to me and nuzzled. My Nandini was safe, with me.
"Are you ok?" I asked worried. She was still not able to breathe. And we still stood in the middle of the fire. She nodded and hugged me tighter. I slowly escaped from the fire.
Time passed and I got no news of Nandini. I had dropped her home, the doctor was called and I was said to go home by Chachi. But honestly speaking, I didn't wanna go home. Not this time, never.. Because my Nandini was sick, unwell, and I had to be with her.
"Hello?" I heard a breaking voice say when I dialled Nandini's number. Oh, she really is unwell. I take in a deep breathe trying not to break down.
"Nandini?" I say.
"Manik?" She replies.
"Are you alright?" I ask. She whined in pain. "Nandini are you-?"
"I am fine, Manik. And I needed to thank you."
"Thank me? Why?"
"Because you saved my life. And Manik.."
"Hmmm? Bolo."
"Can you umm.. come to meet me?" Nandini said.
"Meet you? But your Chachi n Chachu?"
"Chachi has gone to bring some groceries and Chachu has gone to get my medicines. And Rishabh is sleeping. So can you.. umm.. come?"
"Are you sure?" I say. Not only was I surprised that she was asking me to come to her place, but also relieved that she wants to meet me. She really does feel something about me, then.
"Yes.. umm.. pls come fast."
"Ok, I'll b there in 5 mins." I grab my car keys and walk out of the house.
"Manik can I ask you another favour?" Nandini asked.
"Sure, tell me." I say.
"Can you um.. talk to me until you reach here on the phone? I don't want you to hang up on this call. Pls?" She said. Awww.. I'd love to.
"Ok .. yeah why not. Ummm.. what do you wnna talk about?" I put my car keys and then zoom forward.
"No Manik.. um.. you should drive safe. I'll hang up.. you come here ok? We'll talk then. Pls just drive safe. Ok, I'll see you-" I cut her off.
"No it's ok Nandini. I'll drive safe.. and.. talk to you. Just make it something worth talking. Or else.. you know.. I'll fall asleep." She giggled slightly.
"Manik.. there is something really serious I need to ask."
"Sure, ask." I take a turn.
"Manik woh.. ummm.. it's about umm.. Sohaa.." She says. Soha!
"What about Soha? Look Nandini, she is dead! Alright? And she deserves to be. The one who tries to kill anyone, will harm itself too. So, just don't feel guilty about it or anything. Because it wasn't you who set the fire, who spilled oil, it was her! And she is DEAD! So please, don't talk to me about this right now."
"Ok ok.. m sorry."
"You better be." I take another turn.
"So um.. u didn't like Soha?" I could hear humour in her voice. Finally, she is cheering up. Great.. exactly what I wanted.. I think of a witty reply.
"Well.. yeah. I also regret that. You know she was so hot, and so slim. And well, you know, she was really cool. So umm.. I miss her a lot." I said smirking. I know she was boiling with anger and jealousy. "Are you.. umm.. what did u call it? umm.. jealous?"
"Nah.. jealous and me? Pfft! Never." She said.
"Are you sure?"
"Yes., I am. And why on earth would I be jealous? I know that you only like-"
"Yes, I only like?" I smirk yet again.
"You only like.. ummm.. Rishabh!"
"What? Rishabh? Are you freakin' crazy? I don't like him. I am not gay."
"No you stupid idiot. Rishabh uth gya hai, just wait I'll put him back to sleep."
"Do it fast. I am almos there." I say as I park my car outside her house. I horn unumberable times. But she doesn't look out of the window. She has hanged up too. I tried to call her, she isn't picking the phone too. Ajeeb hi ladki hai, khud hi bulati hai, aur ab dekho, gayab!
"Manik!" 20 minutes! 20 minutes intezaar ke baad aayi hai.
"Ji, aap kon?" I say really annoyed.
"Huh? Manik kya bol rhe ho?" She said.
"Aur kya bolu. You call me here in the middle of the night. And then you disappear yourself. Did you know how scary your neighbourhood is? Kabhi koi pathar maarta hai, I was so scared. Akele ladke ko yahi chod dia." I turn around. She started laughing. God, she looks so beautiful while laughing! I turn back and she doesn't stop laughing. She hugs me instantly, startling me. I take time, but I hug her back. I smile and hug her tightly.
"Ummm.. Manik?"
"Yeah?"
"There is something I need to say."
"Yes?"
"Ummm.." I pull back.
"Yeah? Tell me, Ms. Nandini Murthy."
"Mr. Manik Malhotra, ab toh mei tumhe kal hi btaungi."
"No, pls btao yaar, pls pls pls pls."
"Oh my god, am I imagining? Breaking news! Mr. Manik Malhotra actually ek ladki ko 'please' keh rhe hai. World record broken! I should be awarded you know." She says. I pull her close.
"Sirf tumhare liye hai mera pls. Aur kisi ko bhi pls nahi kehta."
"Oh, am I that special?"
"More than that." I wink. She blushes.
"Manik.. coffee peeni hai?" Nandini asks.
"Umm sure.. but umm.. did u need to talk about something? Is that why you called me? Was it.. umm.. important?" I ask.
"Yeah.." She walks off to the kitchen.. "Actually, I just-"
"You just?" I askd her to complete the sentence.
"Umm.. I just.. umm.. u know."
"No I don't know." I smirk. I walk behind her and hug her tightly from back. Nuzzlling into her hair, I hold both her hands into mine and wrap them around her body.
"What are you doing Manik? Rishabh is here nly."
"I remember u said he was sleeping."
"Manik.. I beg u.. Pls.. I-"
"Shhh." And I press my lips on her.
I love her. That's final.
