Mona Singh is a true blue Punjabi and she swears by her mother tongue. That's one of the reasons why the actress can't do away with her strong Punjabi accent. But, her strong Punjabi accent has apparently been an impediment to her budding film career.

After her long association with Jassi Jaisi Koi Nahin, the actress has decided to try her luck in movies, but nothing has materialised. She came back to her lucky charm, the small screen and made it big one again. This time around, she sizzled with dance numbers in Sony's Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa. But, she wants to try her luck all over again. This time, the actress has been getting plenty of good offers and is busy with script reading sessions. But, there is a hitch. Most producers are wary about her strong Punjabi accent.

Mona has been asked by the producers and directors to work on her accent. Says an excited Mona, "My strong Punjabi accent would be an impediment for me to convincingly portray different characters. So, I am trying my best to work on it so that my accent does not hamper my career."

Mona has even found a way out of it. The actress has been reading a lot of Hindi newspapers so that she masters the language as soon as possible. "I have stopped reading English newspapers as I've switched to reading all the major Hindi dailies every day. Watching Hindi news and entertainment channels is also helping me a lot," she adds.
Is she trying her hand at literature also? "I am not a voracious reader, so reading novels is not my cup of tea. I am happy with magazines and newspapers," she says.

Mona was selected for her role of Jassi due to her accent. "When I was playing Jassi, my accent was in fact an advantage for me as it was a Punjabi character. But, now I am out of my Jassi mode, so things are pretty different now," she adds.

The actress has been busy shooting for her upcoming reality show Extreme Makeover, which will be aired on Sony. "The show has been delayed as it is a reality show for which we cannot shoot like a daily soap. I am just keeping my fingers crossed as it is coming on air very soon," Mona says.

OMG, the film industry is full of PUNJABI's.

And they are troubled by her "strong accent".

Its funny... 😆 😆 😆 I always thought it would be easier for them to switch to HINDI...

Oh I hv been waiting for this Extreme Makeover to start soon 😳 ...I m sure Mona will do a fabulous job as the anchor 😛 ..And I think her Hindi is just perfect 😳 ...Sometimes even the punjabi accent sound good to the ears 😳

I did not notice that she has a "strong" punjabi accent, I thought her hindi was pretty good. 😆 Oh well good luck to her anyway. Thanks for sharing 😊

As a Tree-Huggie it is painful for me to say this, but I have to. I have started to feel that Mona is living in a fool's paradise. She is pinning her hopes on Bollywood which couldn't care less for her. Let's face it, how many TV actors have made it really big in the movies? SRK, and that's it. Gracy Singh and Vidya Balan had good starts,but the former is now in oblivion while the latter is slowly inching her way up.

This latest thing about her "accent" being an impediment....has any producer really told her to work on it, or is she just using that as an excuse to explain why she isn't getting good offers? I thought her diction and accent were fine in JJKN. 😕 If she keeps pushing away TV offers to concnetrate on airy visions of Bollywood, she may soon find that she lands up with neither. It sounds harsh, and for her sake i hope my words don't come true, but the entertainment industry does no favours to anyone.

I hope Mona takes a reality check and continues to do TV while waiting for the right film offers.

First of all, Mona is a very hard working and dedicated actress. If she thinks Punjabi accent is a hinderance in her career, she will get to the bottom og it and make it to the top. But I don't think this is the main reason that she is not getting movies. I think its more of her luck, when the right time will come she will hit a big number. Dharminder, Jitender, Vinod Khanna, Akshay Kumar are all Punjabis and they made it to the top. I am pretty sure that she will make it big even with SRK not becasue she is getting work with SRK, but because she is a very good actress.
