Chapter 34
She felt the warmth of the sunlight on her cheek. She sighed in her sleep as she moved, trying to find her husband to snuggle close to. She kept moving but his warmth was missing. Where was he? She thought, still too lazy to open her eyes. Her hand went on the bed to scan around to find her husband. Her eyes opened when she didn't find him. She pushed the blanket up and sat up. "Yeh subhe subhe Mr. Khan kaha chale gaye?" she thought as she got off the bed. She checked the bathroom and the changing room but he wasn't there. She checked the clock on the night table that read seven. Her eyes fell on something next to the clock. Her lips broke out in a smile as she quickly walked up and picked the three white roses from the table. She then picked up the envelope that was placed next to them and opened the letter that was in it.
Good morning beautiful! Office mein ek important conference hai aur usski tyaari kehliye mujhe jaldi jaana paada but I hope you like your first gift of the day. Yeh humari pheli mulaqat kehliye joh uss jaaga ki taara paak hai jaha hum mile the. Uss din tumari masumiyat aur bahadurine mujhe tumari taaraf keech (pull) laaya that. Aur paata kyun tumara anjaana dard, mujhe apna sa laaga tha.
By the way, challenge accepted Mrs. Zoya Ahmed Khan
Love you always
Tumara Mr. Khan
Zoya was now grinning, so big that her cheeks hurt. She couldn't believe that Mr. Khan has done something so romantic for her. She clutched the letter close to her heart and took a seat on the bed. As she admired the pure, white roses, her thoughts drifted to their conversation last night.
They had just made love and were snuggled next to each other. He had his hand against her waist and she was pressed against his body. He drew circles on her bare skin which made her giggle. He looked down at her with a question in his eyes. "It tickles," she told him. He smirked as he repeated tracing patterns on her spine as she tingled. "Mr. Khan, please," she said as she tried to move away. As she wiggled in his arms, his hold around her tightened. "Kya karahe hai aap?" she said as he moved down her and pecked her lips in response. She pushed him away and huffed. "Aap na ek number keh akdu hai, bilkul unromantic," she complained. "Accha? Aur yeh ilzaam hum par kyun lagaye jarahe hai?" he asked. "You know, school mein mere saath ek ladki kaam karti hai. Woh aaj sabh koh baata rahi thi keh kaise aaj woh aur uska boyfriend apni one month anniversary maana rahi hai. Aur humari toh one month, aur six months anniversary khatam hogayi aur humne kuch nahi kiya," she said, pouting. Asad smiled. She looked like a little kid complaining to their parent about their favorite toy getting stolen. "And you want us to celebrate? What do you want me to do?" he said. "Allah miyan, what's wrong with you Mr. Khan?" she said. Asad looked at her confused. If she wanted to celebrate it and he was offering her that he would do what she wanted, then what was the problem, he thought. "Aabh mujhe aise mat dekhiye. I mean keh mujhe aise stupid one month ya one week anniversaries celebrate nahi karni hai. But, main chathi hoon keh aap mere liye kuch kare. Like a date or something romantic," she explained. "Zoya, agar tum bhul gayi ho toh remember jab last week maine tumare liye sabh ready kiya tha toh tumne hi saara mood karaab kardiya tha," he said. Zoya looked up at him and she knew it was no accusation, it was just teasing her. "Toh aapka mere liye zindagi bhar sirf ek baar surprise plan karenge, seriously?" she asked, getting mad at him. "No Zoya, mera woh matlab nahi tha," he said when she interrupted him, "forget it Mr. Khan! Meri hi galati hai. Aap na khabhi ek romantic boyfriend ya husband nahi ban sakthe," she said as she got out of the duvet and grabbed her clothes. "And you are saying this after what we just did," he said as he grabbed his pants from the floor. Zoya felt her blood rage. "Arghhh! Main aapse khabhi baat nahi karungi," she said as she threw his t-shirt at him. He just caught in and wore his shirt as he chuckled at her. She wore her pajamas as got back in bed. She felt his arms encircle around her waist. "Door rahiye mujhse," she said pushing his arm away. He sighed as he tried to turn her around so she could face him but she jerked his hand away. "Zoya please, look at me," he whispered. She sighed. That voice did things inside her that she didn't even understand. She turned around and looked at him. "Kya hua hai? please batao mujhe," he said seriously. "Kuch nahi Mr. Khan. You know jab log boyfriends, dating, aur iss sabh keh baare mein baat karte hai toh I feel left out. Mujhe toh iss sabh keh baare mein kuch bhi nahi paata hai. Aur humne toh aisa kuch khabhi nahi kiya," she told him. She explained how some of the teachers at school were discussing on the topic and they have almost made fun of her because she wasn't very knowledgeable on thse things. Asad understood now why she was so upset. "And you think I can never be a good boyfriend?" he asked. She smiled, "aap bahut acche hai lekin toh akdu hai. Aur aap boyfriend bhi akdu hi hote," she said. "I can prove you wrong Mrs. Khan," he said as he bend down and claimed her lips. Zoya moaned in pleasure and giggled as his hands went underneath her shirt and trailed along her back. As they broke apart, "ok fine, challenge hai aap kehliye, aapko mere liye kuch bahut hi romantic karna padega. Like super cute and super romantic," she said. He just nodded as he sealed her lips with hers again.
Her beeping alarm broke her thoughts. She turned it off and looked at the note again. Honestly, even she didn't know why she was so upset last night. I guess she just wanted the experience of having thoise moments with Asad. But, she hated how she had to spell it out for him. Why couldn't he do something without her asking him? Well, he did Zoya last week and many times before, her heart retorted. That is true, she thought. Now, she felt bad. Here she was accusing Asad of being unromantic and what was she being? Wasn't she being ungrateful, she thought sadly. "Mujhe Mr. Khan se maafi maang leyni chahiye," she said to herself. She took her phone and called him but it went straight to voicemail."I am sorry Mr. Khan. Kal raat paata nahi kyun main aise react kargayi. I love you and the little things you do for me means a lot. I am sorry again for yelling at you last night," she quickly typed a message and hit sent. Seeing the roses, made her smile again. She couldn't believe that Asad had done something like this for her. She carefully place the roses on the table along with the letter. She left to freshen up and get ready for the day. When she returned, she saw her husband's reply. "Zoya, main tumari shohar ho. Tum tumari har khwaish mujhe baata sakthi ho, yeh tumara haq hai aur usse pura karna meri zimedaari hai aur mujhe accha bhi lagtha hai. Aur ha, there are a lot more surprises waiting for you during the day," it read. Zoya couldn't explain how happy she was. Aur surprises? I wonder what they are, she thought as she kissed her phone in excitement. She took the flowers and placed them in a vase with water. Zoya then finished getting ready, grabbed her things, and walked out of the room.
Downstairs, Dilshad was arranging breakfast. Zoya walked up to her, "Ammi, aap baitiye. Main karti hoon," she offered. "Aree nahi beta, hogaya. Tum yeh coffee Haider koh dekhe aana. Woh study mein kaam karaha hai," Dilshad said. "Jee Ammi," Zoya said as she took the tray with a cup of coffee in it. After graduation, Haider had joined Dilshad constructions and was training under Farhan and Asad so he could learn the work and the technicalities. He was working on his first assignment and was in the study. She walked into the study to see him diligently working. "Haider, Ammi ne coffee di hai, yeh lo," she said. "Thank you Bhabhi!" he said gratefully as he picked up the coffee mug. "kya hua devarji...abhi kaam shuru kiya hai aur tak bhi gaye," Zoya teased. "ha Bhabhi, paata nahi Abu aur Bhaijaans itna kaam kaise karlete hai," he said tired. Zoya chuckled as she lovingly patted his head. He placed the laptop on the table and started to drink coffee. Zoya took the laptop and curiously started to see what Haider was working on. Haider took his coffee and left to talk to rashid about something. Zoya was screening through the presentation and pretty impressed with his work. She heard Haider's phone ringing but ignored it. It rang again. "Shayad kuch important hai," Zoya thought as she picked up the phone without even looking at the name on the screen. Before she could even answer, "Haider...bahut baadi problem hogayi hai. Abu ne kal kisiko bhulaya hai mere rishte kehliye. Main kuch samaj nahi aaraha hai. Main yeh nahi karsakthi. I love you Haider, main sirf tumse pyaar karti hoon. Kuch karna padega, meri madad karo please," she heard on the phone. Zoya was shocked to hear that. "Haider kisise pyaar karta hai," she thought.
She lowered the phone and looked at it. If she was shocked before, she felt her heart stop looking at the name on the screen. She didn't know how to react. Haider returned and she immediately cut the call. "Bhabhi...kya hua?" Haider asked. It took a second for Zoya to orient her thoughts. "Tum aur Humi ek dusre se pyaar karte ho?" she asked directly. Haider was stunned at the sudden intervention. "Bhabhi...woh actually...woh," Haider hesistated. "Haider, agar pyaar karte ho toh bol doh," she said. "Ha Bhabhi, main aur Humaira ek dusre se pyaar karte hai," Haider said, kind of nervous. Zoya threw her arms around Haider in excitement, "I am so happy for you guys, this is so cute!" she said. Haider was surprised at her reaction. "aap naraz nahi ho?" he asked as they broke apart. "Well thodi naraz toh hoon, tumne ya Humaira baata kyun nahi," Zoya said, a little upset. "Sorry Bhabhi, maine hi Humaira se maana kiya tha keh aapko kuch na bole," Haider honestly told her. "kohi baat nahi! Main abhi jaake sabh koh baata thi hoon, sabh bahut khush honge," Zoya said happily. "nahi Bhabhi please, aap abhi kisiko mat boliye," Haider said. "Par kyun Haider?" Zoya asked. Haider didn't know how to answer her. But, he knew Zoya liked honesty. So, he told her how Humaira was scared about their relationship being rejected and the whole Zoya in the same angle thing. Zoya took it all in, "I am sorry Haider, main Humi se baat karo?" she asked. "abhi nahi Bhabhi...give it some time! Mujhe yakeen hai keh main usse maana lunga," Haider said. Zoya smiled, "theek hai...you have until this semester is over for Humaira then main sabh koh baata dungi," she warned jokingly. Before walking out the door, "And Haider, thanks for telling me the truth," she said with a smile and left. Zoya couldn't believe that Humaira loved Haider. But, she was happy for her sister. Haider was a good guy, and she prayed that they were happy together.
As she walking back, Imran ran up to her. "Chachi, mere paas aapkehliye kuch hai," he announced. "kya hai?" she asked confused. "Chachu ne mujhe aapko dehna bola tha," he said as he handed her a small rectangular box which was wrapped in silver gift paper. Zoya excitedly took it and thanked Imran. She then quickly ate some breakfast and walked out of the house. Getting into the car, she saw three more roses on the seat. Except, this time they were pink. She smiled and picked them up as she took a seat. She opened the envelope attached to it.
Tume pheli baar dekhne keh baad, mere khayaloon mein kahi na kahi tum basgayi thi. I just couldn't seem to forget you. Then, I saw you at Imran's school. Aur phir Ammi ne tumara rishta laaya mere liye. Jab maine tume tumare ghar par dekha toh thoda shock hua tha phir soocha keh shayad Allah ki yehi marzi hai. Yeh pink roses humare woh khoobsurat rishte kehliye joh humne humare milne se nikkah tak guzara. Shayad issi darmiya main tume pasand karne laaga tha. Lekin khabhi samaj nahi paaya keh yeh naya ehsaas kya hai
Zoya's smile kept getting bigger and bigger as she read the letter. She recalled the moments they spent as her smile grew wider, even thought that wasn't possible. She then recalled the gift that Imran had given her. She reached into her bag and pulled out of the small box. She quickly ripped the package and opened it to reveal a beautiful, pearl maang teeka. "wow," was her first reaction as soon as she saw it. The whole way to the school, Zoya kept smiling thinking about Asad. She couldn't believe that he was making this day so special for her. She was really blessed. She happily reached to school and started her daily routine. At recess, Asma ran up to her. "Zoya Miss, yeh aap kehliye," she said as she offered Zoya three yellow roses and an envelope. "Yeh kisne diya hai?" Zoya asked. "Shhh...secret hai, nahi bolsakthi," Asma said placing a finger on her lips. Zoya giggled. "Yeh Asad ne yaha tak yeh sabh kaise paucha diya," she pondered as she saw Asma run off to play with her friends again. She told one of the teachers to watch the kids and went into the classroom. She opened the third later of the day.
Yeh phool humari dosti keh naam. Jab hum dost bane toh ek dusre keh aur paas aagaye. Main tume aur thoda jaane laaga aur shayad pheli baar tume apne baare mein bhi baataya. Tume paata hai Zoya, tumne jab mere ateet koh ek alag nazar se dekhna seekaya toh paata nahi kyun, mere andar ka dard ek ajeeb taara se kaam hoga. Tumne mujhe seekaya keh kaise bure keh beech bhi acchayi keh saath jeesakthe hai. Thank you for becoming my friend, my best friend.
Zoya felt tears well up in her eyes. He has never told her any of this. Not even when these things were happening. The fact that he was sharing this with her meant a lot. She knew how hard this must be for him. Was she forcing him to do all this? She thought. Soon, the kids returned and she kept the flowers and letter aside safely, and continued with the rest of the day. As the day ended, the kids left. Zoya stayed back to finish some needed paperwork. She looked through the last paper and placed it in the file. "Finally, all done," she said to herself, putting the file in the cupboard. "Good! Because I couldn't wait anymore," someone said. She instantly recognized his voice, "Mr. Khan...aap?" she said turning towards the door. "Aap kabh se yaha hai?" she asked walking up to him. "Just a few minutes," he replied. "Phele kuch kyun nahi bola?" she said. "I like watching you, jab tum itne concentration keh saath kaam karti ho. Aur waise bhi yeh shayad kuch dher hai jab tum bina kuch bole ya kare baiti ho," he teased. "Very funny Mr. Khan. Aapki meeting kaisi thi?" she said. "Theek thi. Main yaha tume kuch dehne aaya hoon," he told her. She just looked at him with a question in her eyes. "Yeh tumare liye," Asad said as he bought forth three red roses and a small square box wrapped in red gift paper. "Phir se gifts? Kitni roses aur gifts denge aap?" Zoya said as she took the roses and box from him. He then gave an envelope. "Phir se letter, aabh toh aap bolsakthe haina?" she asked. "Tume paata haina keh main zyada kuch bolta nahi. Tum yeh padlo," he told her. She smiled as she took the envelope. She turned and placed the roses and the box on a table nearby. Zoya then opened the letter and started to read.
Tumne mujhe zindagi jeena seekaya hai Zoya. Mujhe yeh khabhi nahi paata tha keh main meri beeti baatein bhul kar, zindagi mein aage bhi badunga. Lekin tumne mujhe seekaya hai keh zindagi mein jitni bhi mushkil aajaye, tum aage badh sakthe ho. Tumne mujhe pyaar ka ehsaas kaisa hota hai yeh seekaya. Tumne seekaya keh dil se khush hone kya hota hai. Tumne mujhe phirse muskurana seekaya. Tumne mere dil koh dhadak na seekaya. Main nahi jaanta keh main yeh sabh khabhi tumse bol paata, issiliye maine apne dil ki baat likhne ki kosish ki hai. But ek baat main tumse hamesha bol saktha hoon. I love you, forever and always.
Tears spooled from her eyes onto her cheeks. She couldn't believe that he was actually telling her this. When she had asked him last night, she was honestly just kidding. She had wanted some cheesy date but this, this meant a lot more. His words were melting her heart into a puddle of goop. When she turned to face him, Asad was shocked at her tears. "Zoya, yeh tum," he said gusting up to her. "You know Mr. Khan, aapko itna bolna nahi chahiye. You make me cry," she said as she chuckled and wiped her tears away. "I love you," she said as she wrapped her arms around his neck. His arms went around her waist and pulled her into embrace, as a smile graced his lips. "Aur Mr. Khan, please khabhi badaliye mat. Aap jaise bhi hai, mere hai, and I love you for that," she told him. He moved back, "I am sorry. Main tume rhulana nahi chatha tha. Bas tume woh baatana chatha tha mere dil mein kya hai," Asad said as he placed a kiss on her forehead. Zoya closed her eyes in bliss as they just stood there. Someone's footsteps broke their trance and they moved apart. "Hum school mein hai, hume jaana chahiye," Zoya said as realized where they were. She then turned to grab all her stuff including the flowers she had received since leaving the house and they left.
As they were driving back, Zoya opened the gift he has just given her. Inside were dangling, pearl earrings that matched the teeka from the morning. "Wow Mr. Khan, yeh toh bahut khoobsurat hai, aur subhe aapne joh teeka diya usse match bhi karta hai. Thank you Mr. Khan," Zoya said happily as she closed the box and placed it in her bag along with the teeka. "I am glad keh tume pasand aaya," he said. "Ek baat poocho?" she said and he nodded as he drove the car. "Aap ek din, well actually ek din se bhi kam waqt mein itna sabh kaise karliya?" she questioned. "I have my ways," he replied playfully. She giggled as she took his hand in hers. "Thanks Mr. Khan! Kal raat jab maine aapko kitna sabh keha diya, I didn't mean that. But, I know keh aap kehliye yeh sabh karna kitna mushkil hua hoga. Par, aapne mere liye yeh sabh kiya, it really means a lot," she told him seriously. "Main chatha tha keh tume yeh sabh paata chale, and you are always welcome," Asad said as he caressed her hand. Holding hands with each other, they reached home. As they walked in, "wow Bhabhi, beautiful flowers! Kisne diye?" Najma asked excitedly. "Tumare Bhaijaan ne," Zoya replied with a grin. "Awww...how romantic," Nikhat added. Asad just blushed and excused himself letting Zoya take all the teasing from Najma and Nikhat.
Walking into the room, "Thanks Mr. Khan for all your help downstairs," Zoya said sarcastically as she placed the rest of the flowers with the white ones in the vase. "Tum jaanti ho keh main tumari madad nahi karsaktha tha. Aur agar main waha ruk jaata toh woh dono mujhe bhi nahi chodte," he explained as he buttoned the buttons of his navy kurta. She just looked at him and shook her head as she walked in to change. Seconds later, she ran back into the room. "Mr. Khan, ek aur?" she said surprised as she held a golden colored, square box in her hand. He smiled and just nodded. "Aur kitne surprises denge aap?" she said. "I promise this is the last one," he told her. Zoya happily opened the package to find a beautiful, white dress inside. She ran her hand across it, admiring the dress. "main chatha hoon keh tum yeh kal raat koh peheno," he said. "Of course, yeh toh main...," she stopped as she picked up the dress in her hand and realized it was sleeveless. "Mr. Khan, main yeh kaise," she said looking at him. He stood up from the bed and walked up to her, "main kal raat tume iss dress mein dekhna chatha hoon," he stated. "Lekin main yeh kaise pehen sakthi. Aap toh jaante hai keh main," she hesitated, not knowing how to explain to him. "Zoya, kya tum mere liye yeh nahi karsakthi?" he asked. She looked up at him and his face had a serious and flat expression. "Mr. Khan, main aap kehliye kuch bhi karsakthi hoon lekin yeh, woh bhi sabh keh saamne, mujhse nahi hoga," she said helplessly. "DAmmit Zoya, tum kyun apne aapko aise ghut ghut kar jeene par majboor karahi ho. Yeh nishaan tumara ek hissa hai, you have to accept it Zoya. Tum mujhe bolti hona keh apne ateet koh jaane doh, I am asking you to do the same. Please, jaane doh usse," he said. His voice started out as yelling but in the end, it was pleading her to listen to him. Zoya felt tears stung her eyes. It was easy to show him, to let him into her dark past. But, to show everyone else? She wasn't sure if she was strong enough to do that. And he wasn't talking about just the family. Tomorrow, everyone will be there. It was chand raat, the night before Ramadan began and they were having a get-together. She didn't know if she could wear this and show everyone, and be able to see their disgust or pity towards her. Her silence was driving him crazy. He wanted her to let go of this insecurity that she kept hiding inside her. He knew it was wrong to push her but he also knew that if he didn't, she would never let go. He wanted her to be free in the real sense. He wanted her to see herself through his eyes, beautiful inside and out. He wanted her to accept herself. For all that she had done for him, this didn't seem like much at all. Asad pulled her closer and she landed on his chest, and started to sob. He just held her in his arms, letting her pour her pain out.
