Chak De India Breaks Gender Stereotypes-Dollymix
A new Bollywood movie about the gender inequality in India called Chak De India has received rave reviews from critics. Following the story of a women's field hockey team in India, Chak De India stars Shahrukh Khan as the girls' coach and is loosely based on the true story of a 1980s Indian national men's hockey goalkeeper. Khan follows the usual movie pattern of being a "has-been" male coach of an all girls sports team and manages to turn in them into champions, but this movie uses field hockey as the perfect outlet to discuss gender inequality, patriotism, and the social classes in India.
Yahoo News reports that movie-goers in India particularly love the scenes where "the women go around breaking Indian stereotypes -- walking out of homes, beating up men who harass them in public and declining marriage proposals -- all for hockey".
