Salman Khan bags Rajiv Gandhi award
WHAT is the world coming to or more specifically, what is India coming to? Amitabh Bachchan remains untouched by law despite the fact that a court in Faizabad (northern India) has ruled that he illegally had farmland allotted to his name. He and his wife Jaya have also been accused of pinching taxes. And yet the Bachchans are still revered by the same Indian nation that readily files cases and burns effigies against actors and actresses at the slightest whim. That whim could be a politically incorrect statement made on TV, indecent exposure or a simple kiss on screen. Apparently they are considered more heinous crimes than siphoning off farmland!
So the Bachchans are the Bachchans. They have clout and they regularly crack coconuts at temples. That, it seems, is enough to excuse them even if they have announced that they want to donate all that land…land that doesn't belong to them in the first place!
On the other hand, Sanjay Dutt has gone from being the most loved Munnabhai to the most victimized. And while he serves time in jail making wooden canes, Salman Khan not only practices his pelvic thrusts in his latest film Partner, but actually gets awarded for it. Reports confirm that the Congress is honouring Salman Khan with the Rajiv Gandhi award for his outstanding commitment to entertainment. Did the Congress not watch the Munnabhai series? Any idiot could have confirmed that if anyone from the film industry deserved that award, it should be Sanjay Dutt. It's ironic that though Salman Khan may have more than one criminal case against him, but as far the Congress is concerned he's still a winner.
"We don't mean to influence the court's decision. We just want to honor him as an entertainer and that's why we are giving him this award," said Charanjit Sapra, Vice President, Mumbai Congress and Convener, Rajiv Gandhi Awards. Salman will share the stage with Kapil Dev and the flavour of the season Shilpa Shetty who also faced charges of obscenity for kissing Richard Gere. Guess the Congress found that pretty entertaining too!
Anyway, the Rajiv Gandhi award will be handed to Sallu just two weeks before he could go to jail for poaching on a chinkara near Jodhpur. The actor is also standing trail before a Mumbai court in a hit and run case where one person was killed. And there's more. His recent hit Partner (his home production since it has been produced by brother Sohail Khan) is facing charges of plagiarism.
It's a small consolation that the announcement has left at least some Congressmen red faced and has given the BJP an issue to pick on. "It is a tradition of Congress to always glorify criminals and those who don't follow the law of land," said Madhu Chavan, BJP spokesperson.
