How many of u agree with Bobby Jindal?

Recently the Governor of Louisiana,Bobby Jindal made a statement which angered many Indians.He said that he doesn't like to be called an Indian American as he is born and brought up in USA and has nothing to do with India.

He has a point,i too am annoyed when people call me British when i was totally brought up in India and still live in india..i've mentioned this the nth time on the forum about how this effects me..i totally understand that guy.

America is a land of immigrants. We don't always call all white people Polish American, German American, British American etc. Why do colored people have to have an extra tag that makes them different from other Americans (British/Australians or what have you)?

Where does it say that only whites are to be considered as Americans? Is that an official position of USA or is this one of those cases where a "few" influenced your thought process?

If you are going by the U.S. Census Bureau, there are 5 categories: White, Black or African American, American Indian or Alaska Native, Asian, and Native Hawaiian or Other Pacific Islander.

Most importantly, you are given the option to choose more than one racial category to identify yourself.

It so happens that a majority of the population (60% - 80%) in the USA is identified as white (non-Hispanic Whites and White Hispanics) so it is possible that the "outside" world views Americans as white. But that doesn't mean the insinuation that whites are the only Americans is justified.

As for "African American", you misunderstood the term. It was blacks themselves who objected to the word Negro back in the 60's or 70's and instead wanted to celebrate their cultural ties with the African continent; hence the term African American. Later the black power movement wanted to project black as their group identifier so, the rest said, fine, whatever!

The irony is that when "Americans" invade Iraq or some other country, none of the Indians or Chinese or other aliens want to take ownership of the action. It's always the "whites" who get the blame.

I struggle a lot to connect with India. The only connection I have are my parents. Part of the reason why I joined this forum is to see if I can get more in touch with my original country.

Though right now, I truly can only see myself as Canadian. When I think where I am from, my values, culture - etc... I can only think of Canada.
