Earlier, 30 was the end of a woman's career; different today: Shabana Azmi

IANS New Delhi, January 26, 2015 | UPDATED 12:33 IST

Veteran actress-social activist Shabana Azmi has expressed hope for women in Hindi cinema, observing that roles are becoming substantial for them and are being written for all age groups. "I am very hopeful. I feel the roles are becoming substantial in films that are women-centric, but even within the films themselves," Shabana said Sunday evening at a special session of the Kolkata Literary Meet.

Shabana Azmi

The multiple National Award winner highlighted the fact that the current crop of films are incorporating characters of working women, and that women artists are demanding meatier roles. "Today, even in gangster movies, women are working...I think there is a greater understanding within the women artistes themselves, where they are demanding more meat if not necessarily in terms of the length, but definitely in terms of what the character is," she said.

Also, various age groups are being portrayed in Hindi cinema today, Shabana said.

"I think it is a very important time for Hindi cinema because roles are being written for all age groups. Earlier, 30 was the end of a woman's career. But today, the roles are opening up and they are available, so I do think that happy times are here," she said.

The reason, according to Shabana, is the advent of multiplexes.

"The advent of multiplexes has thrown up choices. Why did we have a certain kind of film in the 1970s and 1980s? Because the intent of the producer was to cater to the lowest common denominator, because you wanted to get the maximum number of people in the audience.

"Today, it is possible to cater to a certain section of the audience and still make your money through your multiplexes, through urban centres. There are films which don't only depend on the lowest common denominator and that is opening up the way for lots of different things that are also being made," she said.

Disagree with her.

How many actresses, after marriage, do you see coming in films? And of those that do come back in films, how many films are termed as 'hits'. Only Sridevi has been able to do it.

Karisma, Kajol, Rani, Madhuri, Juhi, even Kareena now - All sank. They tried their comeback and most failed. So age does play a factor in all of this. Those actresses who are 30+ and still unmarried, still see themselves in films - at least more often than the ones that are married. All the actresses mentioned above had their biggest peak either in their 20s or very early 30s. After that it was a sinking ship for them either because of marriage responsibilities or because of the lack of good scripts. Whereas the guys of Bollywood can still find work after even the age of 40+. Highly unfair. Its the actresses above 30 who can put the 'act' in actress.

What earlier? Sharmila Tagore did a good number of good movies after becoming a mommy. Even did a movie with Big B, the then #1 hero.

I disagree. If things really were different, we would see Shahrukh romancing Madhuri on screen..

i don't know why motherhood is an issue here...i read some statement that the women ppl used to lust upon, once they get married and having kids, they are looked down upon as 'aunties' 'bhabhi' and other so called respectable fugly tags this makes no sense 🤢 In West i have seen so many actresses making a career after becoming a mother and look at their physiques, look at halle berry she even has diabetes, but i salute her will power...here it's sad that women are restricted to responsibilties after marriage. there is basically no 'career' after marriage. women do it just for a hobby, their priorities are not the same. its only women who can change it no one else...we can just hope for a better future

I remember when Ash was dropped from Heroine for being pregnant Sharmila Tagore was among those who came to her defense and said that she worked well into her 6th month of pregnancy. You just dress a certain way or make sure the camera angle doesn't catch your protruding belly.

Sharmila was in the 70s though and that was still a good era. I don't know what happened but Bollywood regressed in the 80s and 90s. Quality of films, roles for women, treatment of women, those two decades were horrible.

Kajol is out work by choice. All her movies post marriage did well, actually those movies were post baby as well. Ash was out by choice as well and I don't think her post wedding films did any worse than pre marriage. Raveena, Karisma, Juhi, Madhuri and so forth are 90s stars who suffered being from the wrong era. But to be fair Madhuri at least is trying and doing movies and does get roles written for her. How well it does or doesn't do is a whole other debate.

Maybe Shabana is being too simplistic in her statement here. Perhaps a more accurate way to describe is to say that age marriage and motherhood doesn't shut the door for women these days.
