Popular Acting Award - Totally Pointless?

I honestly fail to understand that what the heck is the point of having a "Popular Actor" award category in the first place? Acting is acting, what in the world is "Popular Acting?" What is the criteria for winning this award, I've never ever heard of anyone say that "yes in this movie _____ actor has done popular acting." It sounds absolutely ridiculous!

I feel they should just cut this category and award on the basis of acting alone, which is what the name of the award suggests! BEST ACTOR.

In schools are we awarded based on our academic performance or how popular we are in the school? If the Oscar Academy gave acting awards based on popularity then Tom Cruise and Robert Downey Jr. would win every year.

It is just nonsense and kills the whole point of the award. A huge list has started to form of people in the Hindi cinema industry who don't attend these awards because they know the reality, and that list is just going to increase.

See it depends on how you look at it. The 'popular actor' category only benefits those that are popular amongst the film industry. It really does not serve a purpose. Sometimes a deserving candidate wins the award, but of late its just those people that bring in a mass of crowds to their films or in other words Salman, Shahrukh etc. Of late neither of the Khans have shown superior acting compared to their contemporaries, but they are still able to bag awards in this category. Because after all they are indeed 'popular.' Its just another way to recognize their work every year whether they are deserving or not.

And despite winning the 'popular' category there are times when they win the best critics or simply 'best actor' award as well when there are deserving candidates...once again goes back to their popularity. Let's take Aamir for example. It is clear that he deserves the best actor award for PK. But why give him an award that he won't accept? So they look for other options. Now Shahid doesn't necessarily attend every award function. He's another deserving candidate to win 'best actor' this year. If he doesn't attend, what's the point in giving him the award? It's all planned. But its not fair to put the blame of the Khans. Dirty politics have always been a part of reality shows, award functions, etc. The awards have lost credibility these days.

To answer your question there was a time when it was nice having two distinct categories: best actor (popular) and best actor (critics). But now those distinct categories are pointless. And will always remain pointless. But it is what it is and we'll just have to accept it.

Yes. Leave that for a special type of award where only the popular with no talent wins. Like Hollywood..they have MTV award or something along that line for the popular celebs. While the Oscars is for good performances and good films only.
It's obvious the popular award is to feed the egos of the big stars who have an ego bigger than their stardom. They have to award them so they can attend. Pity them. Why can't Bollywood be like Hollywood where all actors attended even if they know they are not going to win. Lack of support for their peers in Bollywood, 🥱

I think it's needed because a person whose movie is popular should be rewarded !! Btw SALMAN don't care in them nor he go to receive them so bringing him up don't make sense , but us supporters like to see him get ESP when he has a high grosser and he's popular !!

Isn't your popularity already proved by your movies making big money despite bad reviews?
So that makes it utterly pointless

But i guess only screen does that..filmfare doesn't have this..there is only one main best actor/actress award in leading role there

Our award shows are very people pleasing. If you attend the show you win the award. There is critics choice, popular, best, and god only knows what else 🤪🤡

Can't believe as a kid I used to look forward to these award shows so much and make my parents videotape it for me (back in the 90's). 😲😳😆

They're only missing a category for best PR and best philanthropist. DP raani won't have to buy other awards then cause she's most deserving candidate for both those categories.

So if Salman supporters like to see him get an award in the 'popular' category, can't Shahrukh supporters want the same for their favorite? The popular category is there to recognize popularity rather than the acting aspect. You have the acting left for the critics award for best actor.

Earlier the award was for POPULAR actors who have done really well in their movies that's why they named it so.
Nowadays the criteria is only POPULARITY.It doesn't matter if the actor/actress didn't deserve the award. All it matters is Popularity.

Screen Awards has been giving a Popular award only since 2008/2009 so thats like 7 at the most . Srk has won 4 of them . Salman , Shahid and Akshay all have 1. Now SRK has hosted these awards for 4/5 years as well. Now blindfolded in the basement Stevie Wonder can see whats happening . Is it a big deal ??? No not to me cause others do it most likely and I only watch Filmfare Awards . It might be a big deal to others tho
