Chapter 47:
"Shivansh Pathak. Top of his class, winner of several debate competitions, and most importantly recipient of the scholarship sponsored by Tripathi Inc."
Prakash Tripathi stood up as he welcomed Pathak into his office by listing the young man's many accomplishments.
"Welcome. Firstly, a hearty congratulations to you for passing your certification exam. Please, have a seat."
Pathak extended his hand out to greet the businessman who was welcoming him so warmly.
"Thank you so much sir. It's a pleasure to meet with you, truly a dream come true. After all, it's only because of you and the scholarship you provided that I was able to fulfill my ambition of becoming a lawyer."
Prakash waved his hand, dismissing Pathak's words. "Oh nonsense Pathak. It's all your hard work that has led you so far. Anyways, I have called you here for a pretty important matter. Shall we get down to business then?"
Pathak became serious and nodded eagerly to hear why he had been called in for a meeting with Prakash Tripathi, founder and owner of Tripathi Inc. "Yes sir."
"Ok good. I am hiring you Pathak. I'm hiring you as a temporary legal associate for my company. You are going to report directly to my head lawyer Karanjkar and I will evaluate your performance after a few months to make a decision of whether I should offer you a permanent position in this company. Sound good?"
Pathak looked on at the man in front of him with wide eyes, completely taken aback by the sudden offer of employment. "Y...Y...Y...Yes, sss...sir. I...I can't believe that...I'm get...getting such a huge opportunity. I promise sir, I won't let you down."
Prakash nodded briefly and handed Pathak a signed letter of appointment with instructions to join the following week.

Six months later
He grabbed the pen with a heavy heart and tear-filled eyes. Looking longingly at the image of his laughing boys once more on the phone screen, he signed off and gave away his life's earnings and work without a second thought. As soon as the file was whipped out of his hand, a sharp prick deep into his forearm made his vision hazy and his mind numb to everything around him. The darkness engulfed his body and he could feel himself falling endlessly into a black pit. Images of both his sons floated in front of him periodically. He tried to reach out to them, but his arms lay at his sides unresponsive, like iron rods. He could hear muffled voices sporadically, though none of the words made sense, as the noises sounded like gibberish.
He had no idea what the time it was, but without any warning, his vision was filled with a sparkling light. It looked like his own house sprawled out in front of him, but there was something ethereal about the entire scene. He could feel his lips curving into a smile as his two sons ran out of the house towards him. He wanted to lift his arms up and catch them both into an embrace, but his arms just wouldn't respond. Then, out of the corner of his eyes, he saw a car speeding down the driveway, headed directly towards Karan and Kabir. He wanted to call out and tell them to watch out for the car, but it felt like something was lodged in his throat, making it impossible to even whisper a syllable. With a thud, the car ran over his sons and drove off, leaving a pile of flesh and bones in a puddle of blood. The image was eerily vivid, the tears coming out of his eyes felt tangible, but the experience was surreal, almost dreamlike. As suddenly as the image had appeared before him, the anguishing darkness reappeared just as instantly, engulfing him completely.
---------------------------
Pathak looked up from his computer as the phone rang for the fifth consecutive time on his boss, Mr. Karanjkar's desk. Looking around and finding Karanjkar still gone for his lunch hour, Pathak answered the call himself.
"Hello, is this Mr. Prakash Tripathi's legal consultant?"
Hesitantly, Pathak answered. "Yes, this is Shivansh Pathak, one of his legal associates. May I know who is calling?"
"This is inspector Bhatt calling from the Malad police station. I am contacting you with regards to Mr. Prakash Tripathi's whereabouts."
Pathak became confused. Just last week Mrs. Gayatri Tripathi had made an announcement about her husband's ill health and cited that he would be on a long term leave from the office. She had stated that she would be handling the business while Mr. Tripathi recovered. "Yes officer. What about Mr. Tripathi's whereabouts?"
"He is currently at the Dharavali Medical Institute and is admitted into the ICU. It seems to be a case of attempted homicide, hence we thought it best to contact his legal team first. Can you please come to the police station at the earliest?"
Pathak became shocked by the news. "Y...Yes. I...I...I'll g...g...get there immediately."
Seeing everyone from the legal department still out for their lunch hour, Pathak immediately rushed out of the building and drove as fast as he could to the police station. Sitting in the car, he became more perplexed by the situation and thought aloud.
"Attempted homicide? But Mrs. Tripathi said that sir was just ill and taking a break from work for a few months. Does that mean she...she tried to kill him? But...but why?"
Arriving at the police station, Pathak took a seat as he met privately with the officer in charge of the case. "Mr. Pathak, given that this is such a high-profile case, it is our priority to investigate immediately."
Pathak shook his head indicate his disapproval. "No inspector, until my client recovers and gives his statement, I urge you not to leak this matter into the public space. In fact, it is best that you let me deal with the situation and inform his family and business associates as well. Please do not contact anyone but myself for any matters related to this case. I will gain all the necessary approval from any higher authorities to delay the investigation proceedings."
-----------------------------------
"Hello Dr. Garg, my name is Shivansh Pathak. I am Mr. Prakash Tripathi's legal consultant; we spoke on the phone earlier this morning regarding this case."
"Yes Mr. Pathak. We've had him, Mr. Tripathi that is, here at the hospital for the past week. It seemed like a case of attempted murder so the hospital administration had no choice but to contact the police. They managed to communicate with you and have told you the details of the situation I presume?"
"Yes Dr. Garg. I will be handling everything for my client from this point forward. However I do have one request for you. I already know that you have a policy to keep patient matters confidential, but this case in particular must be treated with utmost care and privacy. Absolutely no information regarding my client shall be disclosed to anyone, and I repeat anyone, unless it is authorized by myself; this includes anyone who claims to be a family member or a close business associate of my client. I hope that my request will be carried out by you as well as this hospital's staff."
"I understand the gravity of the situation Mr. Pathak and you can rest assured that I, as well as my staff, will make it our utmost priority to ensure that this delicate situation is handled confidentially. In fact, it's just me and two other hospital administrates who know of Mr. Tripathi's true identity."

Two more months later
The sound of someone's raspy breathing filled his ears. He realized after a few moments that it was the noise of his own painful inhalations and exhalations. His throat burned and called desperately for water, but his body felt heavy and motionless; not a cell in his body was responding to his brain's signals, leaving him gasping painfully. He wanted to open his eyes, but his eyelids felt as though they had been cemented closed. He heard a collection of muffled voices again in the distance, none of them sounding familiar to his ears. He could hear an assortment of beeps and drips in the otherwise silent room. He tried again to lift up his eyelids; doing so required an immense effort on his part, but finally he managed see a sliver of the surroundings through the small opening. Another round of intense struggle and his eyes opened fully and adjusted to the brightness of the room slowly. Through his cloudy vision, he could sense the army of monitors and machines on either side of him, the wires leading into parts of his body that he could neither see nor feel. Out of the corner of his eyes, he saw two shadowy figures standing on one side of the room; their voices permeated his ears clearly just moments later.
"Dr. Garg, I have already made the arrangements to have Mr. Tripathi shifted into a private nursing home, where he will be sufficiently taken care of."
"Okay Mr. Pathak. We will prepare the discharge papers soon. I would like to monitor him over the next 24 to 48 hours to ensure that his condition is stable."
"Thank you. Now is it okay for me to meet with my client in confidence?"
"Yes, but you must take care to avoid anything that may stress him. He's just come out of a coma after 2 long months. Also, make note that he won't be able to respond to you as he is entirely paralyzed from the next down."
Coma...two months...paralyzed; the words flew around his mind until they settled somewhere deep inside his brain. Suddenly, the events that he had last experienced came haunting back. A loud beeping sounded from one of the machines, the heart rate monitor to the side of him, and he could perceive shadows of multiple figures crowding around him, as they attempted to control the spike in his heart rate. The beeping subsided a few minutes after a nurse injected something into his IV and a single familiar face came into his view, as the multiple shadowy figures around him dissipated.
"Sir, this is Pathak. Can you hear me?"
He tried responding, but his body failed him yet again. The only movement he could manage was the closing and opening of his eyelids; even that took an enormous amount of energy, but he mustered up the strength and blinked once.
"Okay. Sir, we're going to shift you to a nursing home as soon as the hospital discharges you."
He blinked again to indicate that he understood. Questions about his sons rose in his eyes, as the tears pooled together. Pathak noticed and leaned in close to whisper into his ear.
"Kabir and Karan are both absolutely safe sir. They are back in Benaras for the new school term. Gayatri ma'am has no inkling about you being here sir. I will monitor the situation and keep you updated but you need to focus on getting back to good health."
He blinked again. Having so much to say and ask, but no way to communicate was excruciatingly painful. The only information that gave him some peace of mind was that both of his sons were absolutely safe.
-----------------------------
"Inspector, it is my client's wish that this case no longer be pursued."
"Mr. Pathak we have already delayed the related investigation proceedings by two months on your insistence and now you are telling us that you no longer want the case to be pursued? Why?"
"I do not find it important to give any explanations to you inspector Bhatt. It is my client's right to decide whether or not he wants to press charges and pursue the investigation. He has decided not to do so."
The inspector shook his head in disbelief as Pathak wrapped up the conversation.
"Also inspector, I have permission from higher authorities to take all the files and documents related to this case from your possession. Absolutely nothing related to this case is to remain in police records."
-----------------------------
"Yes. It was Dr. Dayal Garg who saved me all those years ago...the savior who came to my rescue to pull me out from the clutches of death. Thankfully it was Pathak who heard about the news of my survival from the police and had enough sense to handle the matter secretly, without notifying Gayatri or anyone else."
Kabir kept his eyes on Rachna as his father spoke. Gayatri's attention was almost entirely shifted towards Prakash now, so Kabir inched closer to Rachna. He slowly extended his hand to grab the knife out of Gayatri's hand when Rachna's eyes met his focused gaze. She held her breath as Kabir took hold of the knife and threw it across the room in one swift motion, while grabbing her waist and pulling her away from Gayatri's grasp. The loud clatter from the knife hitting the marble floor caused everyone in the room to look towards Kabir and Rachna with surprise, while Gayatri fumed in anger. Rachna wrapped her arms around Kabir's chest, as she buried her face into his shoulder. He stroked her hair with relief and took a few steps back, to ensure that he and Rachna were a safe distance away from Gayatri.
In the next moment, Kabir was jerked backwards by a sudden pull at his collar and Rachna was harshly removed from his embrace. Pointing a gun at Kabir's chest and holding Rachna's wrist tightly with his other hand, Mayank stepped forward with a smirk to reveal himself to everyone in the room. Gayatri smiled brightly as she saw her son.
