Chapter 41:
Rachna closed the bedroom door as Kabir walked in and seated himself onto the bed. She immediately grabbed the first aid box and handed him a pill with a glass of water. He took it from her quietly and swallowed the medicine. She cleared up the side table and fixed the bed so he could lie down comfortably. Kabir wanted to break the silence in the room, for he felt that Rachna was trying to suppress her own feelings and emotions for his sake, but he didn't know where to begin the conversation as his head throbbed and his body ached with fever pains. In a matter of moments, his eyelids began to feel heavy, partially a result of the sleep-inducing effects of the fever reducer and largely due to the relaxing motion of Rachna's hands on his temples. Through closed eyes, Kabir held Rachna's hands in his to stop the massaging motion of her fingers as a last ditch effort to prolong the time he had before the drug-induced sleep took over.
"Rachna?"
"Hmmm?"
"Are you okay? I mean, everything that Raju just sa..."
"Kabir?"
"Yeah."
"Just shut up."
Kabir smiled as she twisted her hands and broke free from his clutches; her fingers resumed their circular movements on his temples. She bent down over him and her lips lingered on his forehead for a few seconds, while a few loose tendrils of her hair tickled his cheeks. It took a matter of minutes for him to fall asleep and a matter of hours before she could even think about closing her eyes. Rachna sat on the bed while Kabir slept peacefully next to her. Though she had forced both Kabir and Karan to stop their discussion on the topic, she herself tried to dissect and make sense of the information that Raju had revealed.
She was trying to protect her son Raju had said. Her son? Gayatri Tripathi has only two sons, Karan and Kabir, and obviously neither of them had done the accident. Nor does it seem likely from what I have heard about the woman that is my mother-in-law that she would ever try to protect Karan or Kabir from any problems. So what could it be then? Could that just have been a mistaken assumption on the part of the servants? After all, what Kabir had said made a lot of sense. Gayatri could have arranged for the accident to happen to launch the plan of separating Kabir and me. How could she possibly have found out about us though? And even if she managed to concoct such a smart, involved plan just to separate Kabir and me, why would she make the mistake of having fake divorce papers? How does this unknown messenger fit into all this? There's just too many broken links. After all, there's just no way that Gayatri could have found out about Kabir and me being married. I never used my full name in public; I always went by Rachna Garg.
Rachna grabbed her head as it spun from the whirling thoughts that muddled her brain. She got out of bed and stepped into the balcony for a quick breath of fresh air. The twinkling lights of the city spanned out in front of her; it was 2 AM, yet the hustle and bustle of Mumbai even in the wee hours of the morning wouldn't indicate any such fact. The slight chill of the night air mixed with the salty ocean scent wafting in from the nearby sea shore relaxed Rachna almost immediately. She breathed the delicious air as she took a seat on the patio chair. A few deep breaths later, Rachna felt calmer and much less light-headed. She leaned her head back against the chair as her mind began to drift again, sleep far from her eyes.

Rachna walked out of Terminal 3 at Indira Gandhi International Airport and looked around for the driver that Kabir had arranged for her. She was in Delhi for the week to present KT Creations' new designs at a fashion conference. Kabir had wanted to hand off the project to one of his design assistants since he didn't want to put too much work pressure on Rachna, as she was still in the first trimester of her pregnancy. Rachna however, had convinced him that she was absolutely fine to be presenting at the conference and he had reluctantly agreed after thorough consultation with her obstetrician.
Rachna spotted a man holding up a sign with her name and the KT Creations logo on it. She introduced herself and he took hold of her bags as he led her to the car. Rachna took a seat in the back and massaged her aching calf muscles while the driver loaded her luggage into the trunk. During the drive to the hotel, Rachna called Kabir to notify him that she had reached safely.
"Hi Kabir, I'm here and on my way to the hotel now."
"How was the flight Rachna? And how are you feeling?"
"Good for both questions. My feet hurt a bit from sitting so long, but I think I'll just take a nice warm bath once I'm at the hotel and head off to bed after that. The conference starts early tomorrow morning so I want to make sure I wake up in time."
"Okay. I've already arranged for the hotel to send your dinner up to your room. Oh and when you check in, I've booked the reservation under Rachna Garg, just for safety reasons you know."
"Yes Kabir, you told me that fifty times before I left Benaras. I know that I have to use Rachna Garg for business transactions. Everything will be all right, don't worry."
"I know, I was just reminding you. Anyways, how's the little munchkin?"
Rachna smiled as she placed her hand tenderly on her tiny, protruding belly. "Munchkin and mommy are both fine. Munchkin is telling papa to not worry so much."
"Well papa can't help but worry. After all the two most important people in papa's life are sitting 800 km away right now and papa misses both of them very much. I have no idea how I'm going to spend the rest of this week Rachna; hurry up and come home."
"Munchkin and mommy miss you too papa. We'll try to wrap things up early here and make it home soon. Looks like I've reached the hotel Kabir, I'll talk to you later okay. I love you hon!"
"Love you too sweetheart. Take care and don't push yourself too hard. I'll call you later this evening once you're settled in."
The week in Delhi proceeded as planned. Rachna attended the conference, which was being held at the same hotel that she was staying in, and presented the designs to some potential new clients. As much as she wanted to cut the trip short and fly back to Benaras ahead of schedule, the conference was a bigger success than anyone had anticipated. Rachna lined up back to back meetings with interested investors during the last few days of her trip, thereby confirming that she would only be heading back to Benaras on the pre-scheduled date. Finally the grueling week came to a close and Rachna, more exhausted than she had ever been before, headed off to the airport, ready to go back home into Kabir's arms, looking forward to spending some much needed alone time with him after so long.
Rachna sat in the waiting area in front of the gate reading a book as she waited for the flight to begin boarding. Someone dropped their purse in front of her so Rachna bent down and picked up the bag. Sitting up, Rachna smiled as she extended the purse to its owner, who looked disinterested as she talked into her phone. The lady, whose face was almost entirely covered by a floral printed chiffon scarf, took her purse and gave a small nod to acknowledge Rachna. She took a seat in the chair right next to Rachna and continued to talk on the phone, as Rachna went back to reading her book. The bracelet on Rachna's wrist caught the attention of Rachna's neighbor, as she stared at it with deep interest out of the corner of her eye. Hanging up her phone call abruptly, the lady turned towards Rachna.
"That's a lovely bracelet young lady."
Rachna looked up from her book with surprise. She glanced at her own wrist. "Thank you."
"Do you mind if I have a closer look at it? It's just that I'm really interested in eclectic jewelry pieces such as this."
"Uhhh, sure." Rachna timidly extended her arm out for the lady to inspect the bracelet more closely.
"Hmmm, very nice piece. May I ask where you got it?"
"Well my husband gave it to me. I think it's a family heirloom."
The lady nodded slowly, as she released Rachna's hand. "Well, it's very beautiful. Take care."
The lady leaned down to pick up her purse from the ground, stood up, and walked off without any warning, leaving Rachna confused about the entire encounter. A ringing of her own cell phone with a call from Kabir distracted her from any further thoughts about the mysterious lady that she had just met.
As Rachna walked towards the gate to board the flight a few hours later, she bumped into someone and dropped the belongings that she was carrying in her hands. As she bent down to pick them up, the person whom she had bumped into also bent down to help her. His hand purposely brushed up against hers and a chill ran down Rachna's spine. She immediately pulled back her arm and looked up from the ground to see the person's face. He smiled back at her as he handed the rest of her scattered belongings back to her and stood up. He held out his hand to help her stand back up, but she refused the outstretched arm and looked away. The man walked away from her without any further interactions, but Rachna continued to feel uneasy for the remainder of the day.
Kabir unlocked the apartment door and walked into the house carrying the suitcase, with Rachna following closely behind him. While he turned on the lights to the kitchen and living room, she remained standing in the entryway, rooted to her spot. Kabir placed his hands on her shoulder and she came out of her thoughts. Smiling faintly at him, Rachna took off her shoes and quietly walked into the bedroom. She put her purse away in the cabinet and took out a towel, before she went into the washroom. Just as she undressed herself and got in the shower, Rachna heard the door open. Kabir soon joined her under the hot water and placed his hands tenderly on her tiny belly and gently pecked her lips. However, Rachna didn't respond to his touches at all.
"Are you okay Rachna? Tired?"
Rachna turned off the water abruptly. "Yeah Kabir, I'm fine. I just want to go to sleep though. It's been a long week and I'm really tired."
Rachna dried herself with the oversized towel and walked out of the wash room to get dressed in the bed room. Kabir came out a few minutes later, by the time which Rachna had already climbed into bed and fallen asleep. Kabir soon joined his wife and lovingly observed her as she slept. She had lines of worry etched onto her forehead. He placed his ear on Rachna's belly and talked to the baby growing inside of her. Kabir didn't realize when he fell asleep, but he was suddenly jerked awake by Rachna's scream. Rachna was shaking in fear, as she tried to bring herself out of her nightmare.
"Rachna? Are you okay? What's wrong sweetheart? Did you have a nightmare?"
She didn't respond to any of his questions; rather, she just buried her face into his shoulder and tried to erase the images of the nightmare from her mind. She still felt uneasy as she was unable to shake off the feeling that had overwhelmed her since the unusual encounter with the man at the airport.
--------------------------
Rachna felt her eyelids close and no longer fought that sleep that was washing over her mind and body. She was shaken awake the next morning by Kabir, who had found her sleeping in the chair on the balcony.
"What happened Rachna? Why are you sleeping out here?"
"I'm fine Kabir. I just wanted some fresh air last night and I guess I just fell asleep while I was thinking about some stuff."
"What kind of stuff?"
"I was just trying to figure out how Gayatri could have found out about you and I being married. Do you remember the time that I went to Delhi for that fashion conference?"
Kabir tried to recall what Rachna was talking about. "Ummm yeah, I think so. You came back from that trip pretty tired and stressed out. I remember you had a nightmare that night."
"Yeah, I was just thinking about what had happened at the Delhi airport that day when I was coming back."
"What happened at the Delhi airport? You never told me anything about this before?"
"Yeah, actually I was feeling really uneasy that day since I bumped into Mayank. Well, I didn't know it was him at the time since I had never seen his face up until that point. Anyways, his hand brushed against mine and I just felt weird for the rest of the day after that. I think he might have seen the name on my boarding pass but I'm just confused as to how he could possibly connect Rachna Garg to you Kabir. Oh and there was another odd thing that happened. This lady sat next to me in the lounge and was interested in my bracelet; you know the one that you gave to me on our honeymoon. Her face was covered by a scarf so I didn't see who she was. I didn't think anything of it back then, but for some reason I remembered it last night."
Kabir became confused by this new information that Rachna had told him. "She was asking about your bracelet? You mean the bracelet that was dadi's?"
"Yeah, that's the one."
"Well Rachna, the only woman that could have recognized that bracelet is Gayatri. She had wanted that bracelet for so long but papa never gave it to her because dadi only wanted my wife to have it. Gayatri must have immediately figured out that you were somehow related to me just because you were wearing that bracelet. And then...of course! Mayank must have purposely bumped into you to find out your name. Rachna, it's from that day that Gayatri has known about us and she must have planned out this entire accident drama after that just to separate us."
Rachna's heart sank, as the meaning behind Kabir's words sunk in. "But why the fake divorce papers Kabir? Gayatri didn't gain anything from this accident except for the fact that my parents died. I mean, why would she do that?"
Kabir sighed as he placed his hand across Rachna's shoulders. "That's just what I don't understand."
