Chapter 40:
"It was a little over one year ago. Madam ji was very worried about something; she would often have long discussions with her lawyer about how to save someone from some sort of mess. At least, that's what I was hearing from some of the other servants that worked in the house. I had been helping Baba with the gardening for a few days because he was not feeling well. Even my mother was in the hospital because she had been having chest pains for some time; the doctor said it was important for her to have an operation performed or else she might get a fatal heart attack. I was working round the clock to arrange some money for the operation. One day madam ji told me that she had some work for me, so I went to talk to her."
------------------------------
"Raju, come sit here. So how is your mother doing now?"
Raju shifted nervously in his seat, as he stared at the ground and mumbled a quiet response. "Still in the hospital madam ji."
"Oh that's too sad. Let me tell you what, I'll get your mother shifted from that tacky government hospital to the best private hospital in town and I'll even pay all the expenses for that operation that she needs. Of course, in return for all this help, you'll have to do me a little bit of a favor. So tell me, do you agree?"
Raju looked up at Gayatri with a shocked look on his face. Tears filled his eyes as a smile of gratitude broke out on his face. "Thank you so much madam ji. I'll do anything for you. Please, just save my mother."
Raju returned to the house a few days later, after his mother had recovered from her operation and was discharged from the hospital. Gayatri handed him a pair of clothes.
"Here, change into these clothes quickly and come out to the car."
Raju looked confused as he examined the clothes that he had just been given.
"But madam ji, these are Karan bhaiyya ji's clothes. How can I wear them?"
"Don't ask any questions. Just do as you're told Raju. Now hurry up!"
Raju got dressed without any further questions and followed Gayatri out to her car. The car drove off once the two of them were seated in the back. As soon as the car merged onto the highway, Gayatri turned to Raju and spoke to him tersely.
"You are to do exactly as I am telling you to. Do not say anything to anyone. I will answer any questions that come your way. You are not to speak a single word. Get it?"
Raju nodded nervously and continued to listen with a deep focus.
"When we get inside the court room, you will sit in the chair next to me and remain silent. All that you need to do is sign the name Karan Tripathi on the papers that the judge gives you. You know how to write don't you?"
"Jjj...ji...mmm...madam ji."
"Good grief get a hold of yourself boy! Stop stuttering and blathering like an idiot. So sign the papers that the judge gives you and don't say a single word. That's all you have to do, got it? And just make sure you look completely disinterested in the court proceedings; pretend like you don't care what is happening around you."
Raju nodded again to indicate that he understood, though he felt apprehensive to follow the orders that he was being given. Gayatri rolled her eyes and quickly became busy with her phone.
The car soon reached in front of the court house and Gayatri quickly entered the court room with Raju following closely behind her. The court room was set up simply with a large desk in the center of the room and two smaller tables in front of it. A judge sat at the larger desk and two women sat at one of the smaller desks with a man, whom Raju presumed to be their lawyer. Madhav Karanjkar, Gayatri's lawyer sat at the second desk and stood up when Gayatri entered with Raju. The two women were introduced to the judge by their lawyer, Hiten Lokhande, as Sneha Garg and Pihu Tejwani. Karanjkar introduced his own clients, Gayatri and Karan Tripathi.
The proceedings ended in a matter of a few minutes for the signed settlement papers were submitted to the judge for verification, who then handed them off to Karanjkar. Raju shakily held the pen that was thrust into his hand and carefully signed the papers as Karan Tripathi, after which the papers were officially stamped and signed by the judge. Gayatri gave a check that was to be donated to a charity of the Gargs' choice as per the legal agreement to her lawyer, who handed it off to Lokhande and the hearing was over. Raju followed Gayatri out of the court room immediately after the judge dismissed them and sat in the car with her. She gave a disinterested look to Raju as she spoke to him in a cold tone.
"Okay, so I'll pay you Rs 25,000 per month for your services. You will live in the servant quarters at the house and go to an assigned location daily, probably a run-down orphanage in Dharavi, to do some so-called community service. You are to just do a half-assed job at whatever assignment you're given, act like you don't want to be there, and make sure you speak to no one. You will give your name as Karan Tripathi to anyone who asks. Understood?"
Questions filled Raju's mind as he tried to absorb the information he was being given. He gave a shaky nod to confirm that he accepted the offered agreement.
------------------------
"I had no choice but to do as madam ji ordered. I did exactly as I had been told; I acted like I didn't care, did only some of the work that was given to me, and spoke to nobody. Over the course of the next few months I did find out some things about the situation; just that Karan bhaiyya ji had done some accident in which two people were killed. Obviously madam ji wanted to save bhaiyya ji from the legal troubles so she made me act as Karan Tripathi and serve the punishment. I didn't really understand everything since I thought that Karan bhaiyya ji had gone away to study, but I just assumed that he might have come back and really done the accident. In any case, I didn't care since madam ji had helped my family so much and I just wanted to repay her in any way possible, so I continued the act. It's just that a few weeks ago the police came around asking for the real Karan Tripathi and when they saw me, they arrested me. I managed to run away and escape and since then, I've been hiding out in that old abandoned garage. Please Kabir bhaiyya ji, Karan bhaiyya ji, I've told you everything that happened and everything that I know. Please save me from the police now."
Kabir sighed loudly as Rachna sat beside him with a serious expression on her face.
"Raju, do you have any idea who Gayatri was trying to protect? Did she ever say any names? Think Raju."
Raju pondered thoughtfully for a moment before answering. "No names bhaiyya ji. Madam ji never really talked to me. Everything that I know about the accident is just things that I heard from the other servants who work in the house. One of them, Shyam the cook I think, had said that madam ji was worried about her son, so that's when I thought that it was actually you who had done the accident."
"Thik hai Raju, thanks for everything that you have told us. Now don't worry, I'll handle everything with the police. You see that room over there, you can go ahead and sleep in there."
Karan pointed to the spare bedroom to direct Raju, who continually thanked both Karan and Kabir before he exited the living room and walked into the guest room. Once Raju had left, Karan turned his attention to both Kabir and Rachna, who were both deep in thought.
"She was trying to protect her son? What does that mean? What do you think bhai?"
Kabir shook his head. "I don't know Karan. I understand everything that Raju told us except for that one part. It's clear that Gayatri was definitely protecting someone when she did all this, but the fact that she threw the divorce papers into this entire accident mess makes me wonder if she had purposely planned the accident as well. Maybe this whole trying to protect someone business is just a way for her to cover up her true intentions of separating Rachna and I. After all, Rachna only signed the divorce papers because they had been hidden into the accident case agreement, so this means that Gayatri had to have known about Rachna and I prior to all this. But another thing that I can't seem to wrap my head around is the message from the unknown number and how it led us to Raju. Who would know about his whereabouts and more importantly why would they want us to know all this information?"
Karan nodded his head, agreeing with his brother's thought process. Meanwhile, Rachna continued to stare at the floor, lost in her own muddled thoughts. Her hand brushed up against Kabir's warm hand and she came back to reality.
"Kabir, you still have a slight fever. Come on, let's go inside the bedroom so you can rest."
Rachna stood up and offered her hand to Kabir, who took it with surprise. "Rachna, are y..."
Rachna interrupted Kabir and began walking into the room with him. "Chalo Kabir, it's quite late and both of us need the rest, especially you. I don't need a sick groom on top of all the wedding planning that's left to do. Karan, you also go to sleep now; I'm sure you're also quite tired. Good night."
Before Karan could say anything in response, Rachna had left the living room with Kabir and closed the bedroom door behind her.
