Tamil groups protest against Salman for supporting Rajapaksa

05 Jan 2015 12:31 PM | TellychakkarTeam

Waving posters of late LTTE chief V. Prabhakaran, some Tamils Sunday protested outside Bollywood star Salman Khan's house here for visiting Sri Lanka in support of President Mahinda Rajapaksa.

The demonstrators shouted slogans against the Bollywood star for going to Colombo with "Kick" co-star Jacqueline Fernandez, a former Sri Lankan beauty queen, to campaign for Rajapaksa ahead of presidential elections.

The Tamils flashed posters of Prabhakaran, who was killed by the Sri Lankan military in May 2009. They also carried flags of the still outlawed Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE).

An officer from Bandra police station told that policemen were deployed at Salman's residence during the demonstration. He said some of the protesters had been detained.

Security has been increased outside the actor's Galaxy Apartment.

Salman and Jacqueline went to Sri Lanka last month and met Rajapaksa, who is facing a tough challenge from the opposition in the election set for Jan 8.

The LTEE was banned in India in 1992, a year after it assassinated former prime minister Rajiv Gandhi.

3 reasons why protesting against Salman Khan and calling him traitor is unreasonable!

Kick actor is facing a lot flak from Tamil groups for his recent visit to Sri Lanka where he met with Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa

Salman Khan has a knack of getting sucked into needless controversies. The Kick actor seems to have attracted yet another controversy when he met with Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa during his recent visit to Sri Lanka. If you jog your memory a little, you will remember the magnitude of hue and cry that was spread across Tamil Nadu when LTTE cheif Prabhakaran, who was fighting for Tamil rights in island country, was executed by Sri Lankan army on Rajapaksa's orders.

Salman Khans visit to Srilanka also sparked rumours that he was campaigning for Rajapaksa in the upcoming presidential elections. This led to the agitation of various Tamil parties, and Tamil leader Vaiko pronounced Salman as traitor! While today, few protesters gathered in front of Salman's house, I give you 3 reasons why calling the B-town superstar a traitor is uncalled for:

Salman Khan went for charity work

He might be a superstar, but he is also one of the most humble actors in B-town. While his NGO, Being Human, has been doing some commendable charity work in the country, Khan revealed that he went to Sri Lanka to extend the good work of his charitable trust. In a quote, Salman clarified,"During d READY schedule in sri lanka v hd dn an eye camp there . while shooting KICK jacqueline told me if v do another eye camp in sri lanka i should visit her restaurant also. v did a camp this week and i kept my promise and went to jacqueline's restaurant." The actor had donated 200 lenses to facilitate cataract operations in certain under-privileged areas in Sri Lanka. Instead of applauding his noble gesture, it is unreasonable to jump to the conclusion that Salman campaigned for Rajapaksa, just because they were clicked together.

Double standards of Tamil groups

I am a Tamilian and it certainly bothers me when I hear about Sri Lankan genocide where thousands of Tamils were allegedly killed. While it is right on the part of Tamil parties to demand for boycott of Sri Lanka, there reason for boycott seems flawed. Any life, be it Tamilian or Indian or any nationality, is precious. By just protesting because those who died in the genocide are Tamilians, is a very narrow minded approach by Tamil groups as they are see them as Tamils and not as humans. Where were these groups when many lost their lives in Assam Maoist attacks? Recently, when children were killed in Karachi, Salman deeply mourned for the departed innocent souls. At least the actor is doing what he could for the society and not showing double standards like fringe Tamil parties.

Salman Khan is an Indian, not Tamilian

Traitor is some who breaches trust and goes beyond the back to enemies camp. Calling Salman Khan a traitor is ridiculous, because a) Salman Khan is an Indian, and by meeting Rajapaksa he has done anything anti-national , b) Salman Khan is not a Tamilian. By going to Sri Lanka and shaking hands with President might have miffed Tamil supporters, but that doesn't mean that he is a traitor. Few feel he might have wronged Tamil sentiments, he has done nothing wrong against the national sentiments

Rajapakshe has serious international charges/accusations against him for war crimes during the Sri Lankan civil war. Salman should have known better than to support such a controversial figure.

I support the protestors for once. Rajapakshe has been very brutal against tamilians in Sri Lanka. To support such a cruel person speaks volume about somebody's political opinion.

just because he has an NGO does not mean he can support war criminals, not get punished for killing a pedestrian and hobnob with the underground mumbai mafia.

I kinda agree with you ...
I dont even get how some support this guy actually . The citizens need not protest as it is not going to bring a change and its Salman's personal wishes.

But it is a positive sign that people actually find this very unpleasing
