~The fateful bond~
----------
The planetary alignment could not foretell the juncture that had brought them closer.Their journey did start on different paths, their struggle for survival charted a different course but they were standing at the same crossroads now. One, had found his lady love who had finally held his hand but was bereft of maternal love. The other, was blessed with maternal love but lady love had pushed him away. Once a strong dislike had pushed them apart and now these two were trying to hold each other while grappling in eternal darkness.
One, had his umbilical cord cut off the moment he was born, but the strings of his heart were still connected . Over the years these strings had started to come off .He had tried to pull them near and weave them back but to no avail. As days trudged into years the strings withered away into obscurity. It had all started falling apart on his 8th birthday when he had felt the agonizing throb in his feeble heart. His button like eyes were stuck on the wall clock the entire evening. He was looking at the hands of the clock to turn from an obtuse to an acute angle. But as soon as both the hour and minute hands closed the distance between them and the cuckoo announced the arrival of a new day, his patience ran out. All his friends had left one by one and he was all alone with the scrumptious mound of icing. The candles had also suffered an incognito death. He unwillingly trudged back to his room, dejected and morose and banged his door shut. He snuggled into his bed and pressed his face against the stuffed Pokemon's belly to stifle his incessant sobs. Later that night, a soulless apology by his mother behind the closed door did not stop his deluge. He cried himself to sleep and made up his mind to never go through this again. He vowed to shun all kind of celebrations on the day he was meant to rejoice his birth. From then on, things just went downhill. One fine day ,stuffing his childhood baggage with disappointments, denials, endless inane fights between his parents ,he moved to his new abode. He had a mixed feeling when he was sent away to a boarding school miles away from home. He would have preferred staying back at home as there was still a glimmer of hope fluttering about ,although a nascent fire was building up internally . The hope that someday a hand would caress his forehead lovingly and unconditionally. But in a way he was glad to be away from the barrage of marital accusations that were flung about carelessly, day after day. The first few days in the boarding school were very taxing for the little one.He cried himself to sleep initially but when he heard untoward comments about his behavior and the adage that boys don't cry over and over again by his teachers, he slipped into silence. From there on ,only his eyes spoke. They burned with rage when someone tried to mess with him. They stayed calm when he lost himself in bundles of wires and other electronics. They welled with pride when he bagged numerous accolades. But, they throbbed in pain when he saw other kids scampering to their parents on holidays. The way their Mothers held them in a comforting embrace, placed a gentle kiss on their forehead . How he wished for the same, his heart ached for that one loving glance ,that one outburst of affection. And then in due course of time the truth soared stealthily from his heart to his head. He then consoled himself, all this was not for him. That was the day when he decided to build a wall around himself. An impenetrable wall that no one could conquer. Then again, fate was a vicious bully. A bully who had always knocked him down when he stood up with all his might. This time around, fate waltzed into his life and held him close. For him, she was his guardian angel who would soothe his pain. But little did he know that the journey to her heart would be strewn with yet another set of disappointments and heart aches. Now that she was finally with him he decided to bid adieu to his earlier life. The one that he wanted to erase from his memory . His raging anger had finally razed down his emotional childhood baggage.
The other one had a different story to tell. He was born without a silver spoon. No false promises of the stars or the moon. From a very young age he had tried to find the ground beneath his feet. He had eventually found it but under someone else's feet. Armed with a healthy self esteem and a sullied cloth at his disposal , he paved his way through education by bringing a gleam on expensive leather shoes. He never hung his head in shame as he never felt it was below his dignity. A earnest penny earned was more satisfying than selling his soul for a quick buck. That was the reason for his first fight with a neighborhood bully who had spoken demeaning words about his means of livelihood. That was his first tryst with anger. He had never known his bestial side . Two full grown , muscular men had to come and pry the other kid out of his strong clutches. As he made his way through shining hoards of shoes during his emotionally charged teens, he realized that this was no longer enough to cover the burgeoning costs of higher education. That is when he was prompted to use his brawn rather than his brain. His trembling feet landed him in the boxer's ring one fateful day. The moment he entered the ring, he kept his eyes steady and his heart pumped faster and before he knew it, his opponent had come crashing down. The money that exchanged hands was sufficient to get through first year of junior college. Alongwith the occasional boxing and running around doing odd jobs in the city he managed to crack the toughest entrance exam in the country. As there was still time for first year of engineering to commence, he decided to take a part time job in the cafe adjoining a girl's college. This is where he first saw her, this is where he gave his heart away. The star crossed lovers met over a spilled cup of coffee and a muted thank you. It was not love at first sight so she had to enter through the door day after day. And one fine day , he pulled her away to a secluded part of her college and knelt down on one knee. She was already head over heels in love with him and there was no way she could reject his proposal. Then began their blissful journey. She took away all his inhibitions and injected humongous doses of unadulterated love in his system. People often speculated about the intentions of the pauper towards the princess but he turned a deaf ear to them. He loved her with all his heart and would never leave her side. Alas, Fate had other plans for this one as well. It struck hard, damn hard and snatched the sole reason for his unbridled happiness. All that she left behind was a reflection in the mirror, a lonesome warrior! He once again locked up his pent up emotions and chucked the key far away. The key was found eventually by another girl who tried to force open the locked up emotions. She was successful one fine day and then the floodgates opened and his emotions came gushing out. The deluge of emotions were about to drown that one person who stood in his way. But ,he was saved in nick of the time.
"I would have beaten him to pulp, why did you stop me Randhir?" Parth questioned Randhir after the latter had dragged the former to the tea stall outside their college.
"I know you would have, but there are other ways to suppress this anger" Randhir motioned towards two guys enjoying a puff. The silvery threads seemed to gambol in thin air. The wisps hovered above in concentric circles. They encircled the vortex of worry within and diffused them at distant ends. One fag wouldn't kill them afterall, they mused. Just like the other guys were chugging out their internal turmoil into air, even they would. This was nothing more than adding fuel to the already raging fire within their hearts. A heart, that was beating loud enough to drown the cacophony in their heads. A heart that had always been ripped apart and joined back together, only to be torn asunder later ! They were two peas in the same pod.Their hearts did beat for the same thing, although for different reasons!Randhir held out a pack and asked Parth to pick one. Parth fidgeted initially but finally placed the roll of slow death between his lips, and slipped his free hand towards the lighter. But before he could light the damn thing , epiphany ran through his nerves and a jolt of electrons shot through his brain. He dropped the lighter and shook his head.
"No, Randhir, No,"Parth spoke vehemently." I won't resort to this handicap"
Randhir's lips shifted to a lopsided smile. He flicked his and Parth's cigarette away, far far away from their moral conscience. They had been hurt and mauled because of varied handicaps, they would not let this minuscule roll of tobacco become another one. After all, one handicap was determined to never leave their side. Fate! It had been the biggest handicap of them all!
