only masala films get dubbed in hindi , sadly ... if u look at the general impression about indian films , they (the various film festivals in india n abroad) say that indian films r brilliant , n strictly in the order ...bengali, malayalam , tamil ... bollywood/hindi don't even feature in top 3

as i am a malayalee i could say about malayalam films ... the acting is natural n there r genuine bold stories too... 'namukku parkaan munthirithoppukal' had mohanlal marrying shaari who was raped by her father ...! . the film was a box office hit...

'thaniavarthanam' has mammootty being poisoned by his mother n the mother too commits suicide bec he was being forced to live a life of a paagal by society n traditions n superstitions ... yet another super hit!

yatra , again mammootty n shobhana , the ordeal of 2 lovers n human beings , one struggling to regain his identity n be free n the other patiently waiting with all the love in the world ... again superhit! ...

'sadayam' , mohanlal ... i still remember he was denied the national award for the best actor by the jury stating that the film was too cruel ... there he murders 3 innocent girls just bec there was no other way to escape or rescue them from the clutches of men who were going to rape/sell them ...

'oru vadakkan veera gatha' mammootty... regarded as cult classic where the film managed to force people think 'could it have happened that way' , n sympathises with a villain who we grew up knowing was the epitome of all things bad n evil...

'aham' - mohanlal ... a difficult husband n a man who kills his wife bec he suspected her...

'vidheyan' - mammootty ... a brutal landlord who rapes n uses women as he sees fit , treats servants as slaves , n kills his wife just bec she happened to have the courage to look at his face n mock him for what he is ... a role a hero will never take up... what ever may be the odds ...

'amruthamgamaya' - a shocker of a movie were mohanlal kills vineeth in the process of ragging in medical college ... n he pleads to the principal to forgive him n to cover up the incident bec his life n career n family honor was at stake ... dunno any hero to have done such roles in india

.'panchagni' , a heroine centric film where geetha played a powerful character of a strong woman who just can't stop being herself even when life tries to present her with easier routes... a superhit! ...

kaliyaattom, the malayalam remake of othello, long before omkara n the lead actor sureshgopi won the national award for best actor in it ... the film was brilliant!...

mohanlal n mammotty shares 6 national awards among them , BTW ... n if u add kamal haasan , it becomes 9 ...n 10 if the special mentions r included... just shows the quality of acting n cinema malayalam n tamil alone have...

above is just a random list ... n that too of majorly mammootty n mohanlal movies ...

every language has good n bad movies , classic n masala movies ...sad part is that only the masaala movies get dubbed n shown nowadays ... i remember doordarsan used to air good movies in all languages every saturday ... n even movies from around the world... so sad thay stopped the practice now ...

Have seen and loved all these movies..sadayam is a movie i dare couldn't watch again, just because of the sheer brilliant heart wrenching way mohan lal acted in that film..even aakasha dooth which was about a doting single mother of 6 children suffering lukemia was a good movie..To say that these movies were made in 80's and 90's says a lot about progressive outlook of regional films.. If you want to rate the regional industry you should watch the best films out there to get a better picture..I too miss good old doora darshan days..

I am from kolkata, dont watch many south Indian films. But I have seen two bengali films recently which are remakes of superhit tamil/telegu films-
Magdheera- didn't like the bengali remake, but the film has all ingredients to become blockbuster in hindi, bolly remake of the film is in pipeline I guess.
Arundhati- again didn't like the bengali remake much. Story has potential. Many say the film is a huge hit down south and I can understand why it is so. Don't think any bolly heroine of todays can carry the film on her shoulder, as the film is female oriented and also has very big budget.
Another one is a horror film- I don't know the exact name of it- some thing like Pizza or Pizza delivery ???? The film was also remade in bengali, and I must say it was quite scary and that a big thing for me coz I never get scared while watching any bollywood horror films.

yeah , sadayam was heart wrenching ...n mohanlal was too good in it ... n yes ! 'aakashadooth' ... i still cry while watching it after challenging myself that i won't cry this time 😆 ... yeah , these movies were in the 80's n early 90's ... we had such brilliant writers n directors who gave characters n stories for actors to perform , rather than the present day directors (some) who keeps giving slowmotion walks n fights to the 'stars'...

My personal favorite are padmarajan movies..They are so progressive and relevent even in today's time..His untimely death caused a great void in malayalam industry..I feel it has more to do with writers than directors...sibi malayil -lohitha das duo is behind a number of above mentioned classics..Sibi lost his touch after lohi passed away..MT is no more writing film scripts..From the new lot I really like anjali menon. her manchadi kuru is quite good..

Though not in par with 80's and 90's films , I am liking the experimental films of present days..I liked thanmatra and drishyam and even the recent north24kaatham..

What are some films

Where you were rooting for the pairing of the lead actor/actress with the second lead/side character instead of with the main one?
