The typical saas, who plays kitchen politics and makes things difficult for the bahu, seems to be making way for the modern mother-in-law in telly shows.

The ma-in-law may have undergone a drastic makeover " sporting designer saris, attending soirees and even running business empires " but she continues to play games and manipulate situations. Here's a look at some of the popular ones...

Achint Kaur: Jamai Raja

Playing the modern mother-in-law to the male protagonist Ravi Dubey, Achint is shown as a jewellery designer who is shrewd and money-minded. Inspired by the character of Hema Malini in the film Jamai Raja, Achint makes for an uber stylish saas on TV.

Meghna Malik: Gustakh Dil

From playing Ammaji, Meghna now portrays the designer sari-clad role of Barkha Bhardwaj. Her character is that of a class-conscious and intelligent woman, who refrains from kitchen politics but likes to be in control of everything.

Suchitra Pillai: Beintehaa

Suchitra plays Suraiya Abdullah, who is always busy creating problems between the show's lead characters, Zain and Aliya. To lend authenticity to her Muslim character, she is seen wearing heavy brocade saris and dangling earrings.

Meghna Malik: Gustakh Dil

Rukhsar Rehman: Aur Pyaar Ho Gaya

Rukhsar plays a modern and strong-willed businesswoman and true to her character, she is always seen dressed to the nines. A stylish mother-in-law , Rukshaar will also dominate things around her and her on-screen bahu (Kaanchi Singh).

Anjalee Mukhi: Ek Rishta Aisa Bhi

While she plays a docile saas on Doli Armaanon Ki, this show sees her playing a modern businesswoman who runs an empire. As the show progresses, she will be seen as a discerning saas, who does not approve of her daughter-in-law.

The actress sports a vintage look replete with pearls and designer sarees, in the show. Rich and dominating, her character has negative streaks.
