nothing wrong in wearing saris. I have seen indian women on beach dressed in saris. They looked fine. Nobody was staring at them. I think it is only in serial.

The other side of the coin.. have you noticed how women who wear jeans and western clothing or is working woman in these shows is usually shown as the vamp.. i.e has an affair with a married man or is after the main lead despite knowing he is already married or don't have morals...

Women who wear Sari's and suits are shy by nature (eg: vidya, Mahi) are shown as old fashioned, "behnji", but also the innocent good girl who never does wrong...

Women who wear western clothing and are outgoing (eg: Shabd's ex girlfriend (sorry don't remember he name in the show), Surili (was career oriented didn't want to be a housewife)...shown as girls without morals who are only after money and run after married men...

Seriously we need some good women character who are closer to real life, where the girl can wear what she wants without being typecast as either "old-fashioned" or "characterless"...hehe

As for ppl in America wearing Indian clothes more and ppl in India wearing Western clothes more... well what can we say... the grass is always greener on the other side.. it is human nature to think the other is better and to want to be like that ... šŸ˜† ... plus when we are outside of our country we try to preserve our culture as much as possible hence any occasion we get we like to wear indian outfits... but when in India...when your culture is forever around you... you don't think it is a big deal if you wear jeans instead of Suits or Saris... hope my logic made some sense... hehe... šŸ˜†šŸ˜³šŸ˜³..

that is excellent reply. people need to stop sterotyying women in general. If someone is wearing sari so be it. If someone is wearing jeans or anything western doesn't mean they are bad or characterless. Lot of women wear western clothes regardless of where they live that doesn't mean they have no morals.

My 2 cents on this I don't see what is the creatives problem. What they are trying to show? That women who work or wear western clothes are bad?šŸ˜• Don't know why they are afraid of the reality my mom works and wears western clothes, where is the problem? Despite of working or wearing jeans that doesn't mean that she isn't a good wife or a good mother!

Women who wear Sari's and suits are shy by nature (eg: vidya, Mahi) are shown as old fashioned, "behnji", but also the innocent good girl who never does wrong...
And this are ALWAYS the one who suffer, should we conclude that don't be nice?

Women who wear western clothing and are outgoing (eg: Shabd's ex girlfriend (sorry don't remember he name in the show), Surili (was career oriented didn't want to be a housewife)...shown as girls without morals who are only after money and run after married men...
Again seems unreal...

Completely agree people shouldn't be judged from what clothes they are wearing, the most important thing is that they feel good and comfortable with it.

Once again I agree it happens frequently people ask my Mom if she can borrow them a Sari for a party or a Salwar Kameez, some of the portuguese friends of my Mom think that Indian clothes are prettier than the usual jeans and top or dress...
While I like to wear indian clothes in some occasins my cousins who live in India like to wear western clothes because they wear salwar every day...

great post chandini! i agree with you that we need more real characters in our serials.

but you've made a good point, not all women who dress modernly are vamps or have no morals but i'm talking about the prejudice women in serials have to face nowadays because they are traditional.

why is it that women are always stereotyped into the saree wearing 'bhenji' when they turn up in traditional clothes in a party? creatives should think of better things to boost the TRP's than these kind of discouraging events.

the grass may be greener on the other side but that doesn't mean we forget our culture. you can embrace western culture but for heaven's sake, stop overdoing it yaar.

that aside, i think the only point of these useless serial extras is to humiliate the main lead if she comes to the party in something more than a miniskirt.

yeap agree with u all....
i wud say any cloth u wear in a proper way will make u look decent or indecent...even a sari.
So stating that wearing modern colthes one is characterless...& one wearing sari is old fashined if totally baseless 🤢

Serials r not the rite source to learn anything good or even meaningful...but defintely shows how some much cheap ppl who need to get a life behave & r at the look out of any opportunity to embarrass the other

Cheers
