So i happened to see an interview of Mallika's at Cannes where she called India a regressive state and also says it's depressing to be in India looking at the way women are treated.
Several bollywood biggies like PC, Ajay and Madhuri disagreed with her and called India progressive. Along with that many news channels also insulted Mallika for bad mouthing India internationally.

Do you think Mallika deserved this kind of backlash? Wasn't she just stating the truth? A country where a woman is gang raped on daily basis, where a politician calls rape just a mistake boys make. Isn't that actually regressive? Of course there are exceptions who are very progressive but majority still has that mindset.

It is not to offend any Indian. Lets not take this personally.

I agree with her statement.

When it comes to treatment of women, India is one of the most regressive nations in the world. We need to acknowledge that we are far behind and have a lot of work to do to be on par with the world. Part of the reason why improvement is slow and incremental is because we don't want to acknowledge it.

You can't slot India under black or white. There are a lot of problems, but there's a lot of progress too.

It's unfair to call label it as backward and regressive when it's getting better by the day. Our populace is not even completely literate. But if you have an eye for statistics, you'd notice we are getting better, and at a much faster pace than many a nation in the world.

But oh Mallika, as an educated, conscionable citizen of this country, did you do anything to make it a better place to live in? Nope. It's very easy (and even fashionable) for the likes of Mallika to go to LA, and condemn India and its problems, when they do little about it.

P.S. As per UN records, you're fourteen times more likely to be raped in the US than you are in India.

Firstly, the male chauvinism is all over the world. And rapes happen everywhere, IDK why people associate India with a country where gangrapes happen everywhere, everyday blah blah blah.
Secondly, yes, she deserved the backlash. She's representing India, and India has many positives to feel proud about. Calling it regressive shows her ignorance.. I'd say, what kind of a responsible Indian citizen is she?
There are pockets in India which have regressive mindsets... but that exists everywhere. Considering the kind of largely stratified, heterogenous(in almosy every damn aspect) society India was left at the time of Independence, it HAS come a long way.. What people do not realise is how well it's progressing despite complex web of issues nagging the country.
People who call India regressive are plain ignorant acc. to me... read newspapers atleast... you'll know the kind of complex country India is...and how well it is changing, fighting the social evils stronger with each passing day which isnt an easy job.
If she is so concerned, I'd ask, what has she done to be a responsible citizen?? Easy to blame the country, isnt it?

What Bakwaas !
In the so called progressive US, rapes and molestation is common. Politicians say stupid things about rape and women too. The catholic church had to pay huge amounts in damages as it covered up molestation of pedophile priests knowingly. School shootings have become heart breakingly common.

Hearing all this, I assume people outside think we Americans live a hell on earth ?

Someone should tell her rape exists everywhere. From refugee camps to penthouses. From women in hijab to models in penthouses who make their living scantily dressed. It is nothing to do with how a woman dresses. It is everything to do with power and subduing another person. And rape is not limited to men. Women rape too. So she better STFU.

U can ever never compare the status of women in india and usa.
In US, women file cases more and more unlike indian women who barely comes out. More than that, in USA ,more than 60% rape cases are the ones where people file later saying they didn't give consent because they were drunk in night stops and parties. Obviously right and that's rape. But rapes happen in India is altogether in a different level. Some women file for domestic cases against their husband in USA too.

but u cant freaking compare India and USA rape rates saying, ohh we are better. Scenario is different.

Horrible gang rapes, sexual tension among male in India is on a copmpletely different puke worthy level.

In usa, women can go any where in night or any freaking place any time, with any attire. Police will arrive in 4 minutes to any place after a call.

You freaking can't compare them. Women are 100 times free, secure in USA.

The look u get in India when a women travel on road, eve teasing , concepts which still says women are less, feel any one who went aboard at least once to run away from India and go back to USA/UK.
