Part 15 - day6 ~ part1

Sohum wakes up late in the morning and Rajji is already in the kitchen. After getting ready, Sohum goes in the kitchen and rajji says that his breakfast is already in the living room. He wants to eat but rajji isn't coming. He waits a bit but rajji is still in the kitchen. He keeps looking in the kitchen direction but there is no sign that rajji is coming out. When she does, he is satisfied as he thinks she is going to come and sit with him. But instead of sitting she is looking around for something.

Sohum asks her what she is looking for.

She says "Nothing..."

Sohum insists "Tell me."

So rajji says "Simreen babhi told me she left me some money to do the groceries but I can't find where she put it. I've already looked in the kitchen but it's not there and it's not here either." She looks worried.

Sohum think 'oh, so it's just that' and he says "Look Rajji, there is nothing to worry about. Simreen babhi may have forgotten since they left very early in the morning. I'll give you the money." He gets up, takes out his wallet and goes closer to her to give her some money. "Yeh leh" She is hesitant to take it, so he adds "you're the bahu of this house as much as simreen babhi. It's your responsibility to take care of this house so here, take it."

She takes it but says "Nahi Sohum. This is way too much. I only have some vegetables to buy" and she tries to give some of it back. He put his hand on top of hers. "Rakhle. Agar tera dil kuch lene ko kharta hai to lehlena." Rajji is in awe because it's the first time she is in charge of a budget, before it was always her mother or simreen who would give her a list and an amount of money covering the items on the list. Sohum says "Alright then, let's take breakfast" (He doesn't say "together" but it's what he's thinking) nodding for her to sit.

Sohum is done with the breakfast and it's time for him to go to work. He thanks Rajji for the breakfast and gets up.

Rajji takes the dishes and goes to the kitchen, a few minutes later she comes back with his tiffen. Sohum takes it and says thank you. Rajji doesn't understand why he is not leaving. Rajji says : "Sohum... you should go now, right? Or else you'll be late!"

Sohum "Well then hurry up to get ready !! "

Rajji "get ready? For what Sohum?"

Sohum " I thought since you're going to the bazaar, I might as well drop you there with the motorcycle, it'll be easier than the bus for you."

Rajji is happy that he thought of her because earlier, he never thought of her that much, he didn't care in which condition she had to go to the bazaar. Her face lightens up as she looks at sohum. Sohum likes that he made her happy so he stares back at her with a little smile but then he snaps out of it and tell her to get ready quick or else he'll be late for real! Rajji nods and goes quickly to change.

During the ride, rajji has her hand on sohum's shoulder so that she doesn't fall. She sees her hand and likes the feeling of raman's muscular shoulder under her hand. She closes her eyes and is thinking that maybe this is what a real patni-pati husband relationship looks like. Earlier, sohum used to get extremely irritated whenever she would get close to him, but now, it's as if he doesn't mind at all. There is not any real rishta between them, but she feels totally accepted by sohum now, he doesn't glare at her anymore, he doesn't shout, and he doesn't mind little things like sharing food or physical contact. She is happy that most of the tension of her life went away. He'll never love her and she'll never allow herself to love him, but a life like that, without trouble is enough to make her happy.

She is lost in her thoughts and doesn't notice when sohum's turns off the motorcycle. He looks over his shoulder at her and sees her with her eyes closes and a gentle smile on her face. He stops for a second to look at her (her eyes are still closed and she has the little smile on her lips), what he sees is the old rajji, the one he used to know before their wedding, she used to be always lively and she the smallest things made her happy. He likes to see her like that. Now, he knows that all his efforts are not for nothing. To see this genuine smile on her face makes him want to continue and to try harder to please her.

Then he calls out her name "Rajji."

Rajji comes back from lala-land : "Uh?"

Sohum smirks gently at her "Where did you get lost again, uh?"

Rajji "Err nowhere, I was just... thinking. Oh, we're at the bazaar already? Thanks Sohum." She gets off the motorcycle and starts walking away.

Sohum : "rajji!"

She turns around "Haa?"

Sohum : "See you in the evening." he smiles at her and leaves. Rajji is shocked : "Did he smile at me? It's so rare to see him in a good mood!" She feels happy too now.

Part 16 - day6 - part2

At the end of the afternoon, Sohum is back.

Rajji is surprised. "Sohum App? Aaj bohot pehle agaye kethon se!"

Sohum says "Haa. You were alone at home today so I thought I might as well come home early."

Rajji feels guilty.

Sohum notices the change in her expression so he says "Anyways, there was not much to do today and Cuggi is still there so it doesn't matter much that I left early."

Rajji recomposes and says "I'm going to bring you a glass of Lassi".

Sohum nods and sits. Rajji comes back with a glass of lassi, puts it in front to him and says "I'll be back". When she comes back she sits and has a little package on her thighs. She looks at it then takes the package with both hands, holds it out towards sohum, and says "this is for you."

Sohum is surprised and a bit embarrassed. He takes it and looks at it, asks "What is this rajji?"

Rajji says "Open it."

Sohum opens the packet and sees a high-end tie. It's blue with thin white strips on it and a tie clip. "A tie? But Rajji... What is this for? I don't even wear suits..."

Rajji says "I know but I really didn't know what to offer you so I thought that at least a tie would came handy one day."

"But... Why a gift?" sohum says, looking at the tie in his hands

"I... I wanted to thank you..." Sohum looks at her now "for everything until now. You brought me back in this house when I was being stubborn and you saved a lot of embarrassment to me and to my family. For that, thank you."

Sohum remembers his words in the morning *Rakhle. Agar tera dil kuch lene ko kharta hai to lehlena* and it touches his heart that Rajji immediately thought of gifting HIM something and not buying something for herself. He is moved, but rajji doesn't see it because she is looking down at her hands.

She continues "I know that it's still very hard for you because you don't love me and you'll never will, and somewhere between us there will always be bani -but that's okay because I don't want to take her place- I just hope that we'll find other ways to bond."

Sohum puts down the gift next to him and takes her hand. "Rajji. Whatever I did, I did it because I was the one who was wrong and it was my responsibility to make things right. I didn't do it because I pitied you or your family."

Rajji has tears in her eyes. Sohum continues "It is good news that this past week you felt happy to be here. But we're still not even. You gave me a month to make it up to you, and in the 3 weeks that are left, I will make it up to you. I want to make sure you don't feel unwanted, I want to make you fully consider this home as your own and that you won't ever think of leaving it. I'm not only trying to be nice to you, I'm trying to repent for the things I did. You may have forgiven me, but I have not yet forgiven myself. And if we both give in, I know we can have a happy life, even if there is not romantic love between us."

Rajji smiles and nods, she wipes her tears. She thinks the conversation is over when sohum says "And about bani." Rajji freezes, sohum continues "Whatever my feelings are for her, the day I brought you back, I had already decided that I am not going to make YOU miserable over it. So you don't need to worry about it anymore". He takes the gift, gets up and says "thank you... for the gift... I like it very much" and goes to the room. Rajji feels happy and blushes.

After dinner, later that night the phone rings. Rajji goes to answer.

Simreen says "Hello rajji?"

Rajji is happy to hear her voice "Haan Babhi. How was the trip, did you arrive safely?"

"Yes everything went alright. Except when I came over here, I saw in my purse the money for the groceries. I'm sorry"

"Naa Babhi, it's nothing. Sohum gave me the money."

"Well that's good then. Where is sohum? I need to talk to him." Rajji calls sohum.

Sohum : "Hello babhi?"

"Haa sohum. I just wanted to make sure everything was alright at home."

Sohum starts to say "haa..."

but simreen interrupts him "because last time we let the two of you together, things didn't went so well did they? So you better behave this time around. Rajji ko pareshan maat karna, samja ? Don't give rajji any trouble, you hear?"

Sohum smiles and says "Babhi, don't worry that much. Everything will be alright." Simreen feels better and then she hangs up.

Sohum goes back to his room, Rajji is sitting on the bed. Sohum goes to his side of the bed and says : "You're not sleeping yet? What is it?"

Rajji : "Without Simren Babhi and veer ji, the house is just so quiet... It feels weird."

Sohum thinks about it then says : "Yeah, I feel it too."

They lie down, both thinking that it's the first time they are alone together since the consummation night. They are both uncomfortable and keep tossing around in the bed, not feeling sleepy.

At some point Sohum says : "Rajji. You're not sleeping either?"

Rajji, feeling shy : "No... I can't seem to fall asleep."

Sohum gets up and turns on the light.

Rajji says "Sohum? What is it?"

Sohum : "I'm not sleeping either so I thought I might do some work instead." Rajji nods. Sohum gets some files and comes back to sit on the bed. Rajji gets up and starts leaving the room.

Sohum : "Rajji? where are you going?"

Rajji : "Uh? Nowhere, I thought I might go in the living room for now, I don't want to disturb you while you work."

Sohum : "Tss... You're not disturbing me, you can stay."

Rajji comes and sits on the bed. Sohum notices that she is uncomfortable sitting silently on the bed while he works. He puts the files away : "You know what... I'm not in the mood to work either." Rajji looks at him, questioningly.

Sohum looks at Rajji : "Tell me about your day."

Rajji is surprised : "my day?... there is nothing to say Sohum ... ?"

Sohum "Oh come on! Don't tell me you have NOTHING to tell me? I always see you and Babhi talking during hours at time. How come you don't have anything to tell me? Uh? Or is it because I'm a man ? Or maybe you don't trust me?" He is smirking. Rajji understands that he is teasing her.

Rajji says : "Well, if you INSIST... then..." She starts telling him about an old acquaintance she met at the bazaar who dropped her sabzi on her own feet and it made Rajji laugh, they laugh at it, then they talk about other acquaintances they had, then the conversation slowly drifts on them. They keep chatting and then it's 3 am. They are both feeling sleepy now, their cheeks are hurting from smiling and their tummy are hurting from laughing. They are both yawning so they decide to go to sleep.

Sohum turns down the light and they both get under the covers, turning their back to each other. Rajji before sleeping thinks about sohum telling her "see you in the evening" when he dropped her at the bazaar, she feels happy thinking about it and decides to do something similar.

Rajji : "Sohum?"

Sohum with his eyes closed : "Hmm?"

Rajji : "... see you in the morning." Sohum opens his eyes

Sohum replies "Yes. Good night" and rajji can hear the smile in his voice. She falls asleep with butterflies in her tummy.

Part 17 ~ day 7

In the morning, when sohum get out of the room, he sees rajji is on the phone "Accha, rakhti hoon" As she turns around she sees sohum looking at her interrogatively.

He says "who was that?" as he sits on the couch to take his breakfast;

rajji says "Wo mummyjee thi. She says that I should pass by them if I get the time today. There are the preparations for Jas's engagement going on."

"Accha. I'll come early from the keth today and ..."

"No Sohum. You don't have to. I can go by myself. I don't want to interfere with your work"

"Rajji. It will not look good if you go alone. They'll think that we're still on bad terms. I'll be back by 3pm and we'll go together." Rajji nods and smiles. Sohum smiles back. Now that they chatted for so long the previous night, they feel like they can talk openly to each other now.

As they arrive at rajji's house. They are welcomed awkwardly because Rajji's family don't know how are things going between rajji and sohum and if sohum came here willingly or by majboori. Only binder knows that things aren't going that bad because rajji phoned her earlier this week. She goes ahead and welcomes warmly both rajji and sohum. It warms up the atmosphere. Everyone welcome them then. Sohum is trying very hard to be as much cheerful as he can, even though he is usually more reserved. Nirvail is a bit distant. Sarab says "thank you for bringing raji. You probably have some work to do so we'll phone you when it's time to take her home." Sohum is uncomfortable because he had planned to stay. Rajji notices it and says "Nahi unclejee. Sohum is staying with us all. He wants to congratulate jas for her engagement and wants to take part in the festivities too." Desho is really happy. Jas steps forward and side-hugs him and says "Thank you Jijju!" Nirvail smiles at him. Sohum is relieved and as they all start to go back to sit, but as rajji takes a step, Sohum takes her wrist so she stops and looks at him surprised. He says "Thank you". She looks at him gently and smiles, he smiles back and they go back with everyone else to sit.

It's getting dark. They are all talking and laughing when Desho suddenly says "it's a very nice evening to be all together, I just wish my bani was here with us. She hasn't even phoned since she went to Canada. She must be really happy there. Especially with such a nice guy as parmeet jee at her side."

Everyone agrees and gets a bit nostalgic (especially beejee) but rajji freezes. She looks over at Sohum. He seems sad. Rajji is hurt for him and a bit for herself but doesn't show it. She gets up and says. "it's getting really late. We should get going."

Jas : "Please rajji baji, stay with me tonight! I'm getting really lonely over here without you and without bani. Jijju will come and get you tomorrow."

Rajji responds "No Jas... I can't stay. Babhi and Veer jee are away for a few days, I have to go with Sohum and make him dinner." Nirvail says "What about we all eat together then you can stay with us and sohum will come and get you tomorrow morning." Rajji looks over at Sohum, he looks at her, hesitant when Jas says "Please jijju jee!" so he says "Of course, if Rajji wants to stay, then she can." Binder is excited. She says she's going to help desho make dinner.

They're all having a great time at the dinner. Rajji is sitting with her mother and jas, Rajji is laughing out loud. Sohum is looking at her in awe. There is something about seeing Rajji being cheerful that makes him happy inside as well. Keerat is sitting next to him. He sees Sohum watching his sister.

Keerat says "I wish my sister could always be laughing like that." Sohum is surprised, he turns his head toward Keerat. Keerat is looking in his plate, avoiding Sohum's eyes.

Keerat continues "Before getting into all of these marriages stories, she was very cheerful but she isn't anymore. Now it's rare to see her smile, let alone laugh." Then he gets up and leaves sohum alone with his thoughts. Sohum looks back at Rajji.

During dinner, Rajji looks in Sohum's direction while he is talking to Sarab, and she thinks it must be hard for him... here everything reminds him of bani..." She is sad for him.

Not long after it's time for Sohum to go. He says good bye to everyone and Rajji says "I'm going to accompany you to the door." He nods and they go toward the front gate.

Sohum says "Phone me tomorrow morning to let me know when you need me to come and get you"

rajji nods and says "Thank you for today. I know you don't like coming here too much because it reminds you of bani so thank you very much."

He stays silent a minute then says "It's true that I've thought about bani tonight. But not in the way you think." Rajji looks at him confused.

Sohum continues "I'm not sad or hurt over her anymore. If I've thought of her, it's just that I'm worried."

Rajji says "worried?"

Sohum continues : "Yes. She hasn't phoned yet, that is unlike her. I hope that nothing has happened to her. Bani's mother is so happy that she doesn't notice that something is wrong. If you can, tell Desho to phone at the Bhullar's house and try to get bani's number in Canada or parmeet's one at least. We have to check on her."

Rajji seems to be thinking "you're right. She wouldn't let us without any news that long. I'll sure tell desho."

Sohum takes rajji's hand and put his second hand over it. "Don't worry too much. I'm sure we'll get news soon. I'm going now." He let go of her and goes off on his bike. Rajji loves the fact that Sohum is putting his past aside and thinking with a clear mind about Bani.

At night sohum feels a bit lonely as he got used to Rajji's presence beside him. As he lies on his bed, he can't fall asleep. He keeps tossing over in his bed until his eyes falls on rajji's pillow. It's weird for him to not see her here. Slowly he puts his hand on the pillow but then realizes what he's doing so he sits up straight and says "Yeh mein kya kar raha hoon..." right then, his phone rings. He reached up to it and sees "Good Night Sohum jee. Rajji" he waits a minute looking at his phone, smiling slightly.

Rajji was hesitating sending out the text but she did it anyway because now at least she isn't afraid of being scolded. She is lost in her thoughts when her phone rings. "Thank you. You too." Rajji smiles and starts lying done when her phone rings again. It's another message from Sohum "See you tomorrow." Rajji reads the text and smiles widely putting the phone on her heart. Jas who was sitting on their bed smiles at the scene. She decides to make fun of Rajji.

Jas : "Ohhh... was that a text from Sohum jiju?"

Rajji "hm? Yes. Alright let's sleep." She tries to keep her composure.

Jas : "Come on, itni sharmaney ki bahat kahan hai. Show me Didi, I want to see what Jiju send you!"

Rajji "Aree stop it ! it's nothing like that!" they both laugh and go to sleep.
